Made it to the end of the video! Beautiful photos, Matt! I love the emotions and events you show in your photos of Molly & Nora. I would love to see more videos when you have the time
Nothing wrong with shooting trees. I live near a few different types of woodland and never tire of visiting them throughout the year. There are so many shapes, colours, details, etc, that it's always a pleasure to walk round.
You are the best! Stunning photos. Love them. I really appreciate your gesture of showing us your family vacation photos. I'm just getting into shooting film and your videos are helping me a lot. Cheers.
With the way that the world is right now, both sides of the Atlantic, it's so pleasant to see nice low key videos by a nice guy who loves his family and knows what he's talking about. Congratulations on the forthcoming arrival too Matt.
Hey Matt! Recently found your channel and just had to comment on this old video. I'm a Wilmington, NC native and my wife's family used to own a house at Carolina Beach so it was super awesome to see my hometown through your lens. I ran across your channel after picking up a new (to me) OM2 and you've given me a new perspective on shooting film again. Your comments about having photos of people you love and care about has really hit home as well and I plan on really making it a priority in the future. Love your channel and what you are doing here.
Hi Matt ... I just love the way you cover all the aspects of life in the Day house. The family photos are great, and it reminds me of when my parents used to always taking photos when we were kids. It's something that doesn't seem to happen much these days. Great work ...
Thank you so much to sharing your photos with us! So i can see your enthusiasm here when you talking about your family..that´s awesome! I still remember when my 8-year old boy was a little baby, and i´m happy to shoot many photos from him on 35mm film, cause a couple of years later my hdd crashed. Again: nice video and the best for you and your family. Greeting from europe
Awesome photos Matt! I especially liked the one of Nora on the couch, with all of these photos of your family. It almost feels like I can see Nora looking back at them from the future :) much love and I look forward to seeing more of you on RUclips for a long time. . .
I'm from Wilmington and did a lot of shoots in Carolina Beach before moving to the mountains...great looking shots! I actually have a similar shot to your rocks and surfers hanging here in my office...those twisted trees are a lot of fun to shoot too!
Just wanted to let you know, I was at Carolina Beach last week and because of you I checked out the donut shop. Epic. Absolutely epic. Thanks for the suggestion!
Enjoyed seeing the comparisons from the different formats--nice pics. Please do the bookmaking video, I'm just starting down that path and would love to see your results. Thanks for your videos and congratulations!
Hey, nice shots. watched it to the end. I am a fan of the old analogue, film cameras. I learned on a Pentax K1000 about 30 years ago. Since the digital age it has been hard to make smooth transitions between the two. in the 90's I was using my Pentax k1000 to do all the weddings that i did and had good results with. I now use a Pentax k-01 and have nearly abandoned the film cameras. My passion is in the Film, as i looked at the old slides from years ago and they're nothing like the digital images of today. Wile i was down in PA this last week, my cousin pulled out a old Pentax 6X7 camera that I had noticed that she had and said, "hey Jake if you are going to use this camera I would like to give it to you. What i am wondering is do you have any examples of shutter speed and aperture settings that can revive my training? I think i will be able to pick it up but you know how things are when you have a friend that can say, "did you ever look at this?" By the way, I still have my Pentax k1000 and still use my old lenses on the digital. Hey Matt. Great video sir. Your photos turned out great as always. They all did. your photos on the beach shooting 400 at box speed were excellent. Good example of why film is so awesome and fun to shoot. I normally shoot it at 1/2 box speed and expose for the shadows. Might have to try a roll at box speed. Your videos are inspiring so many man. Keep them coming. I know folks like to see "how to" videos too, like the one you did of the Contax 645 review. If more people can see how to do it, how easy it is, and the awesome results, I know it would be an inspiration to so many to start shooting film more often. Folks are craving the "how to" videos type stuff when it comes to shooting film. And congrats on the new little one coming your way!
Just found you today. Got 4 minutes into it and you mentioned home processing. Maybe you've done one in the nearly 3 years since you made it _but_ I'd love to hear your thoughts/experiences with DIY processing. I _think_ my local, dedicated photography store processes film but curious about DIY. I did a _little_ DIY for my old boss (passport photos, basic head shots for PR) and it was fun. Thanks!! Really looking forward to the rest of this video, comparing the bodies.
Wow I've forgotten how clear film cab be-Great Shots! I'm a Pentax shooter(k20d and k3) I've been inspired to look into the 67 or 67ii and hold off on K1 Thank you
Excellent, loved those pics, colors were great and the Pushed B+W were awesome. I was getting withdrawal symptoms having none of your vids to watch :) keep up the great work = Respect
you rock! ... very nice photos mate! love your stuff!... just got a Pentax645 as well and i really like it! yeah a video about the book would be really nice... cheers!
You are going to be a busy happy man with two children at home. Some of the photos look adorable. Keep shooting, so you would have a record history of your family. Peace, Flood!
I'd definitely like to hear about your change to using the Find Lab for your developing needs now. I used to develop a bit of black and white at my college but now that I'm not there I'm looking to other solutions so I want to hear your experience with the Lab.
I can't wait to hear the podcast. I love having good stuff to listen to when I drive and you actually have a great voice with interesting things to say so this should be good. Great video as always & congrats on your son. :)
Wow, man! These images were incredible. It's probably just a matter of taste, but I was simply in awe seeing the M6 images - incredible, incredible, incredible! Keep it up, man! Edit: I too always mix up Artifact Uprising and Artisan Obscura haha. And I would definitely want to see a video on Artifact Uprising.
Beautiful family photos ! I’m really considering getting into medium format film. I know you do digital as well as film. Wanted to get your thoughts on why you shoot both and what you like about film. I really enjoy your episodes and love your work. Keep doing what your doing. Your a bit of a rarity in this realm being very down to earth and not hyperbolic. Great channel great work !
It’s so weird to have this pop up in my recommended I used to work in CB before getting serious about photography and to see your perspective on it makes me wish I’d taken more photos while living near there. Great vid!
man i just started watching your videos a couple days ago, so this was a fun one to come across as i live in wilmington and just took my pentax 645 down to fort fisher last night :)
Definitely interested to hear your pros and cons of processing at home. I'm guessing you no longer do it because time is so scarce for you at the moment? I currently do all my BW at home and colour, I send off to have done.
Matt you are a very serious photographer for sure.. but you already know that... Your expertise in Film and all that goes with it is amazing.. I hope you kept your home developing set up..i know you are big on buy and trade. However One day you may need to develop a roll "Right Now" ... and the equipment will be with you...Something to think about...
Hey, I have been following your vlogs for a while and always found them inspirational, would love to see the video about artefact uprising... I am just about to embark on my first book and any tips would be great!! Thanks
Hi Matt, love your work and channel. In the Las Vegas video, you mentioned that you exposed for the shadows and rated the film a stop slower. What made you decide to rate at box speed this time around?
This work looks great, Matt! Thanks for sharing it! I'm really looking forward to your thoughts on switching to the Sekonic 508. I just picked one up as well about a month ago for the same reason (spot metering B+W), and I'm loving it. Also would love to hear you elaborate on your experience with getting all of your work developed by the FINDlab rather than doing some at home. So yeah, can't wait to see those videos! PS: That shot of Nora peeking over the pillow is priceless :)
Awesome photos Matt! Especially the HP5 shots. I've been shooting HP5 @ 1600 a lot lately as well, however, the labs I've gotten them processed at have all used Ilfotec DD for developing and the photos have come back with waaaay more grain than I would have hoped. Have you (or anyone else reading this) ever experienced this with that particular developer? Would the Kodak D76 or something else be better?
I'd be 100% interested in an artifact uprising vid. I've used the Adorama service in the past, and had pretty good results, but I'm still a newb, experimenting with various mail in labs, printing services, etc. Speaking of, maybe a comparison of various printing services? Amazon just announced their Prime thing, and Costco is pretty popular as well. Would be curious to see how they do compared to the more "boutique" services.
Great video, also sad to see that you are not completing the 366 challenge. I'm current using the hp5 and also push it to 1600. Do you always go with the widest aperture? Basically all my pictures are at f2 or 1/1000. What are you ending up with? Btw I'd love to see the video on pro and con of the finelab home develop thing :) Cheers
Do you ever print/scan you color photographs into B&W??? specifically thinking about you photos of the trees...when you shoot them in color and then see the final image as B&W...thanks...be proud you have a great family
I have on occasion when I've had issues with color casts and things like that that I'm not happy with. But I try to make the conscious decision before shooting whether I want color or black and white. Thank you!
Hi Matt. Which site that you recommend for beginner like me to learn all about film. I've used film before in the 90's but mainly with point and shoot camera. Now I'm going to shoot hybrid digital and film and plan to choose slr film camera for more control. Thanks for your attention.
Definitely interest in the video on pros and cons of using a lab. Really torn on this because while I really enjoy doing it and nothing has ever made me feel the way of processing my own film. I don't feel I'm getting the results I'm looking for. Also that CCS hat take me back.
Great video! Congratulations on the baby boy! I had a double take when you mentioned your son's name, as it's near-identical to my own son's (Elliott James Arthur Lewis). Good choice of name ;)
Fun to look through! I really like how you constantly use the words "I like [blank]" or "I shot it because I liked it". That's what I try to achieve as well. Thanks for the video!
I really enjoyed going through your photos with you. Awesome work. Thanks for sharing these. I have a question. You (and others) make reference to exposing for the shadows. How are you doing this with your Pentax 645n? I'm thinking spot meter mode with 2-3 stops exposure compensation to put the shadows in zone 2 or 3. I have the 'n, and I also have a Sekonic L-558 spotmeter. With the spotmeter, I usually measure darkest and brightest areas and use the meter's averaging function. In the 645n, I find the matrix meter to be pretty darn good, but I'm always interested in better technique (even after 40+ years seriously pursuing photography). Thanks!
I'm halfway through a holiday in Norway at the moment, and I've decided to develop some of my rolls myself (largely due to cost, got just under 20 rolls), Ive never developed my own before so I'm marking the film I want to send off to the lab, any tips to make sure i won't fuck up the rest? love your videos mate, very personable which is hard to come by.
follow up question if you have the time, I know I'm shooting far too much still, I'm thinking about my shots a lot more but I've still managed to go through ~20 rolls, I was wondering what your take is on how much to shoot, more specifically for holidays, and how much film did you go through on this trip? thanks!
You shooting Colour or B&W? Developing B&W is pretty easy once you've had a bit of practice. Colour is a lot more sensitive to temperature variations with the chemicals. If you are doing B&W, I'd recommend shooting a few practice rolls and developing them before you have a go with your holiday shots. It would be an awful shame to screw them up. If you're talking colour, I have no real advice as I don't do my own, mainly because the lab results are usually awesome and DIY in the bathroom usually seems to have some strange effects I'm not after :)
+andrewford80 thank you sir! I'm only planning on developing B+W at the moment for the reasons you laid out. All my colour is getting sent to the lab. I've got a couple rolls of HP5 I think I'm gonna try first before my holiday shots. thanks for commenting mate!
Nice stuff. When you say you "pushed to 1600" does that mean you set your in camera meter to ISO 1600? And was the film ISO about 800? Also when you say you meter for the shadows does that mean you spot meter on a shadow area in the scene you are shotting? Thx.
pushing to 1600 means setting the camera to 1600 ISO (which is a 2 stop push, HP5 is a 400 film) and then asking the lab to develop it as if it was 1600. The change in development is the difference between pushing/pulling and just over/underexposing.
Hi, Matt. Congrats on the, soon to be released, baby boy. You'll be interested to know that surfing on Lake Erie has been popular for years. There is a documentary on it called "Out of Place". Take care.
beautiful photos, i really liked the m6 family photos, b&w really gives this feeling of "memories" and I agree that 1600 is a good way to use hp5 for general purpose or it's to flat (although I prefer Tri-x!)... Anyways, when you say you expose for the shadows do you mean you place shadows in zone 3 or you place them in zone 5 (overexposing)? thank you!
Made it to the end of the video! Beautiful photos, Matt! I love the emotions and events you show in your photos of Molly & Nora. I would love to see more videos when you have the time
Thanks, Tyler! I appreciate that!
it’s always beautiful to see someone enjoying their day out with family or being close to theirs for the matter
Nothing wrong with shooting trees. I live near a few different types of woodland and never tire of visiting them throughout the year. There are so many shapes, colours, details, etc, that it's always a pleasure to walk round.
I know what you mean!
You are the best! Stunning photos. Love them. I really appreciate your gesture of showing us your family vacation photos. I'm just getting into shooting film and your videos are helping me a lot. Cheers.

Images on the M6 were stunning, might have to look into that 28mm
ur stunning m8

Carolina Beach? Awesome! I've taken some good medium format shots there, with my Yashica 635. And the best accidental double exposure ever
Awesome photos Matt! I especially liked the one of Nora on the couch, with all of these photos of your family. It almost feels like I can see Nora looking back at them from the future :) much love and I look forward to seeing more of you on RUclips for a long time. . .

Also best of luck for the new bub on the way ,always exciting :)
Really enjoyed watching this! Great photos!
Thank you!
Nice video. I enjoyed seeing the output of the different cameras. Congratulations on the family news :)
Thank you!
You have to promise me that you will use it though." so I did and it renewed my passion. I will have to say that i am a little rusty with the film camera.
What i am wondering is do you have any examples of shutter speed and aperture settings that can revive my training? I think i will be able to pick it up but you know how things are when you have a friend that can say, "did you ever look at this?"
By the way, I still have my Pentax k1000 and still use my old lenses on the digital.
Have a look at some things i took a few weeks ago and let me know your thoughts on how i could get this same look with the 67.

The Pentax 67ii is stunning.
Great photos! I personally like your m6 photos the most

Will do! Thanks!

Really like the M6 shots. 35mm really does have a look to it..
I love pushing HP5 to 1600.
my GOODNESS those b&w shots are unreal. also, please show us the book!!!!
Hi Matt, It would be nice to see a pentax 645 review. I do like very much those photos with portra 400. Good job mate!!

Thanks!
I still shoot with my Pentax 645 (non digital) camera, still an excellent camera to shoot with!
Great video…
KonnichiWagwan You're welcome :) Hope they turn out!
Take care.
Never would have guessed! Thank you!
Have you done much/any printing? I'd be really interested in your take on it.
ditto!
If you mean in the darkroom, I have done a lot of it over the years but I haven't in several months!
+Matt Day I would love to see the process of making the book. (layout, fonts and everything)
beautiful photos, i really liked the m6 family photos, b&w really gives this feeling of "memories" and I agree that 1600 is a good way to use hp5 for general purpose or it's to flat (although I prefer Tri-x!)... Anyways, when you say you expose for the shadows do you mean you place shadows in zone 3 or you place them in zone 5 (overexposing)? thank you!
Great video! I'd like to know more about the book printing
Thanks! I'll be sure to do that.
Yes please, make all of the videos you've mentioned!
Will do! Thank you!
