It's been a year since this video came out. Personally, I'd love to see your thoughts on your Rune guard now that you've had some time with it. Would you change the runes you chose?
I'd also love to see a comparison between this and the newest Rune Knight!

Thank you Adam! I appreciate you watching these videos. I never did get a chance to play the RuneGuard... but now that you mention it, I would like to go back and look at this subclass again and compare it to the new Rune Knight... I may wait until the "official" Rune Knight is published, but I can tell you right off the bat, that I love the "passive abilities" of the runes in the Unearthed Arcana Rune Knight... The fact that they still give my character a magical effect even after I use them for the day is a solid vote for Unearthed Arcana's Knight over the Xanathar's Rune Guard.
Thank you for an inspiring idea... Stay tuned! :)

You might have overlooked this but AC for chain mail does NOT add dex modifier so it's 18 with shield.

Oh wow, you are definitely correct. I overlooked that. Well done Codex, thank you for pointing this out. I really appreciate it. Hope to see you around again soon and hope you liked the video!

Wally D.M. Absolutely, I built a runeguard before I watched your video and I was curious to see how our thoughts aligned/differed. Also you're one of the only people who posted a runeguard video, unfortunately I don't think there's a lot of attention towards it right now.

Codex oh cool. So... now i am curious. How did we align or differ? How did you build yours?
Yeah, there is very little attention paid to Runeguards or Xanathars Lost Notes for that matter. I am going to probably do a few more videos on stuff from Xanathars Lost Notes. I definitely dig that book. Hoping to record more soon.

If you want to know the nitty-gritty just say so but I'll spare the intricate details and just give the broad view.
My Runeguard is a mountain dwarf with soldier background that uses battleaxe and shield, handaxes for ranged options, and I also chose chainmail as starting armor. I think real differences start once you get to the runic augmentations and for that I chose:
      Sokn (Stein)
      Vard (Kalt)
      Hagr (Vind)
Edit: I should mention that by differences I mean there are 15(?) options you can choose from in runic augmentations so there is a lot more variety in what any one player can chose.

+Codex oh wow, very interesting to see that we picked 2 of the same runes. Thank you very much for sharing!
