I’m a second grade teacher living and teaching in the suburbs of NYC. I want my students to learn about other areas of our country and how other children may live. I will show this on Tuesday. Thank you for giving us a glimpse into your world on the homestead.

We live in dairy country in Wi. One year my nephew was walking his show heifer down our country road getting ready for fair time. I snapped a picture of him waving at us with his cow on a lead as he walked by our house and sent it to my daughter. My daughter was student teaching in Milwaukee at the time and she showed her students the picture of her cousin and his prize heifer. She said it started a full day of discussion about how she grew up in farm country. These kids lived 2.5 hours away but it might as well been another planet for the differences in our life style.

thank you for sharing a day in the life. We are in minus temps here but just a few more days they say. I just love Maxwell's love for that cat, Sammy is it? He's the quiet one and unassuming I imagine, but his love of animals is clear. They all must be excited for the pancakes. What a neat tradition for a snow day. You are a treasure Ruth Anne, and it lights my day seeing your happiness and what you give of yourself for those kids. We all need more of this in our sad times. God bless and keep you all safe through the winter.

What an awesome day at the homestead! Busy boys working and playing, the animals happy and full of drama, lots of cooking and sewing by mom and daughter, and delicious food. A snow day is “icing on the cake” (or maybe the German pancakes and caramel syrup). Thank you for sharing!

You are such a good mom and homemaker.. You are living the type of life that I have always wanted. I am now in my 60s and have finally gotten the farm that I have yearned after all my life but we are starting from scratch in many aspects of farm-husbandry and self-sufficiency. I am not new to gardening, cooking, baking, canning, and a little sewing, but had never attempted cheese until I (FINALLY!) got my milk cow a year ago. Cheese is still a work in progress..LOL. I learn new things from you with each episode. I’m sure having the upbringing that you and Elvin had was confining in many ways, but ohhhhhh the skills you’ve picked up,!!! Just absorbing them as a no-big-deal daily life occurrence from your mother and grandmother as experienced mentors. I taught myself bread baking as an adult. It took me quite a while to get a feel for the dough, to know when it felt “right”. I still learn a ton from your bread baking tips and tricks. And I wish I had had your patience with my kids when they were younger, like you do yours. My husband and I both held busy busy long-shift jobs when our kids were small, he as a police officer and I as a ER nurse. Our life was always rather hectic. I would love to go back in time and re-do that part of our lives.. it is one of my biggest regrets.

They are growing up to be good people. Because of your good parenting. So much of this video reminded me of my own childhood here in Iowa. Playing in the snow, making snow ice cream. Building forts. I loved the little pigs running around with the cows. Lol Please keep doing what you are doing. God is good for sure. Your fellow Iowan 🙏🤗

It makes me happy to see that kids still love to play in the snow! Growing up in Colorado we were outside in every snowstorm when I was a kid. We tried to build igloos too but really ended up being walls and of course they protected in snowball fights😂 thanks for reminding me how fun that used to be! Good Morning !
Thank you for sharing your busy day ...breakfast looks delicious !!!
When I was a little girl , my parents would take us to their favorite New England inn during the winter . One year they had a special celebration , with a snow-packed toboggan run , little contests for the kids and a chuck wagon ! I vividly remember the dessert . The maple syrup was cooked to the heavy syrup (?) stage and poured over cups of snow , held in little , eager hands ! It became brittle and chewy, like your caramel sauce...what a treat ! Seeing your family work together and play together is a delight !!!

This brings great memories for me. My parents grew up in Canada before they moved to the US in the 60's. When I was a child I remember my dad taking Maple Syrup and boiling it to a soft candy stage. We would take a big pan of clean fresh snow and pour the maple syrup over it as you did with the carmel syrup. We would take a fork and twist up some of the maple taffy what a delicious treat! We always looked forward to snow to share this treat with our family thank you for sharing!

We use about 75g flour, 120ml milk, 1 Egg per person and whisk all together to a batter. Then we make large round flat cakes in a pan - about 2-3 from this amount. Eat with mushed cooked apples (applemus) and cinnamon or jam.

I feel for you folks with the coming storm.one year, we had the coldest winter WV had seen. And I had 30 chickens, 6 geese, 1 dairy cow, 30 dairy goats and 6 bottle feeding calves. It was rough, but I love my animals❤

I live in Texas now but back in the 60’s we had winter just like you are having now. We milked cows and had a farm near Chariton Iowa. Your activities bring back good memories of growing up on a farm in Iowa. Thank you!!!

Wow! You had a very full and productive day!! I can only imagine how tired everyone was😊 and we only saw a few minutes of your day!! Blessings on you and your family! I really enjoy watching. I also grew up on a little homestead with my mama doing all the things and us having to help with the chores ❤s❤❤❤❤

Praying your family and animals are ok in this storm. Thank you for a lovely video. I spent the day winterizing the house and garden today in southeast Texas as we prepare for colder weather. Not like your temps, but 19 degrees is a shock in our subtropical climate.

Thanks for sharing those wonderful moments. You all work so hard! Always a pleasure to watch and learn from you. Well, 7 pm here in Canada on a Saturday night, after a second snowstorm in 3 days. We received 40 cm of snow (16 in) on Thursday and today … 43 cm (17 in). I’m exhausted:) It is so comforting to watch your videos. Thank you. 🙏

Absolutely love it when you share your animals with us. Your German pancakes look delicious. Take care and stay warm. I would love to be able to make bread like you are doing. You make it look so easy but I know it’s all about the yeast is what everyone tells me.

Thank you for this post, I always enjoy watching how you do things, and I learn so much. We’re in southern Alberta, -36 centigrade which is -32 Fahrenheit. So many are experiencing lower than normal temperatures across both Canada and the United States. God bless you and keep you warm until the latest round is over.

I know you don’t have favorites with your children but Harrison seems to be more of a mama’s boy. My son was like this when he was younger, and still has a great relationship with him. I love watching your videos and your family. If more families were like this, especially having chores for the children instead of video games and social media, the world would be much better off! Thank you for your cooking videos, skills and wisdom! I live in Mobile, AL -I can’t imagine that much snow!
