  • It's Adam Koralik here and today we're discussing the Xedusa Plus and the Vedusa, this is an HDMI/component video output adapter for the original Xbox as well as a VGA output device. These were created by the Behar Bros. Frankly, it's great. Offering a lossless image, toslink sound support, and even dual video output.

    You were right on the nose with the VGA addition. I've been using the Dreamcast, Xbox, and GameCube in 480p on a VGA CRT for a couple years now it honestly looks stunning. I actually like the look of them on that monitor a whole lot more than the 240p consoles on a consumer CRT.

  • @phantomhavok7407

    I believe VGA being there is twofold.
    1: VGA CRT monitors are a common, good quality alternative to a BVM or PVM in a retro gaming setup. Plus, good CRT displays still have the advantages of 0 lag and pretty good color reproduction.
    2: For those who are unsatisfied with 480p or 720p resolution options on a digital display, they could route VGA through something like an OSSC and get more resolution options.

    Once upon a time I did go that Pound Cable route. Though in my defense I wasn't aware of all the options. I knew of one or two better alternatives but it was stuff like The Framemeister that at the time was completely out of my league to get. Saw them at a local retro store I frequent and bought some. Did what I needed it to do for about 2 months tops before crapping out on me. I mean, "What build quality?" is more accurate. Now I have one of the Beharbros devices for my Dreamcast, a Carby for my Gamecube. Thankfully one of the TVs I use for retro gaming has Component inputs and I got some HD Retrovision cables for my PS2 and Sega Genesis/CD and the adapter for my Sega Saturn. I do want to eventually get a Retrotink device be it the 2x or 5x depending on possible (hopefully?) future sales and how my wallet is feeling, but it's doing the job just fine for now. Baby steps getting my set up where I'd ideally like it to be.
    But, man, when you do invest in the good stuff it really is a night and day difference. Honestly, at this point, if I had just kept buying new Pound cables (or some variant of them) every time they stopped functioning properly I likely would have spent more on them than I have just getting the quality solutions.

    The Vedusa would be a match made in heaven for people with old PC CRT monitors. Games from that era can look and feel quite nicer than on modern displays - but it may be an acquired taste. I actually prefer to do all my retro gaming on these, so I could consider grabbing it. Thanks for the video.

    • @Mogura87
      @Mogura87 11 месяцев назад +1

      The Dreamcast too is especially nice on a PC CRT through VGA. In my analogue setup I have the Dreamcast split with the TORO to a PC CRT for VGA-compatible games, and RGB SCART to a PVM (not 480p-compatible) for 240p games like 2D fighters and shooters. For the Dreamcast and its typically clean graphics style/aesthetics progressive scan is what I always prefer, which is different from the ps2 for example, where IMO some games with busier, field-rendered graphics look quite sharp and nice in native 480i (only achievable on a CRT obviously). I recently also set up a second Dreamcast with the new component cables from RGC through the RetroTink 5x Pro on the 4k OLED, and it still looks surprisingly clean and attractive on a flat panel. For all intents and purposes I don't see why I'd need an HDMI mod.

    I'm curious if the VGA port on the Vedusa outputs the full RGB color space or if it's only sending YPbPr? I've heard before that the video encoders in Xbox consoles don't do true RGB which is why using a SCART RGB cable with them doesn't get good results. Does the Vedusa VGA port output true RGB?

    The original model of Xedusa I put longer bolts into the bottom of the device. The longer bolts reach the surface the XBOX is sitting on to also support the Xedusa. The top and bottom bolt threads bottom out against each other. The longer bolts bottom out and are thus longer to help support the Xedusa. Problem solved.

    I’m one of those people that uses the VGA. Old 4:3 monitors are available very easily ($15 apiece at most, even sometimes this cheap online) even in LCD form. I can repurpose the monitors I use at work for this purpose if they are ever retired. Much easier to get than any Component TV at this point, so this is what I’ve moved to where possible. HDMI is fine but not realistic for 4:3 options. I prefer not to play with black bars, and in the case ironically with Battlefront 1, playing in 16:9 is a worse experience. It crops the actual viewable area of the game to give a fake 16:9 ratio, so you see much more of your character and much less of your surroundings. Very annoying. Up until now I’m using a 360 with the official VGA cable to play that game, with DLC and title updates installed.

    if you are using a tv with a vga connection you wuld stereo cable input to play audio on the because foe tv's 1 toslink connection was an audio outrput not input, i don't think vga would work for xbox an it never supported it as valid connection
    even if you could do 1080i via component realistically from the default multi out wart plug-in you most likely get a max of 729x400p (NTSC), noting no firmware update release to support
    Noting from a pc perspective 1080p has only been available for the last 8-10 years from a console perspective you would likely need to flash the dvdrom firmware to support it as stock they wouldn't natively support
    the og xbox was always a ntsc console the only thing to determine region was the dvdrom drive itself
    to this day vga still requires stereo jack input

    • @jasonhowe1697
      @jasonhowe1697 8 месяцев назад

      look I own a tv that has composite, component vga and , vga and hdmi , even if vga had of been supported back in 2001 for OG xbx you would still of had issues with pin out on compoonent-vga cable never properly functioned from a scart use case it if the cable was wired as either as component pr c-sync with component signal
      with dvd having a standard of upto 1080p sad to state that only a few did ever support up to 1080i though the actual firmware typically didn't support it on the dvd drive by default
      as soon as i wentt to hdmi i didn't look back in terms of console
      Pal resolutions didn't really turn up to the xbox one as far as i'm aware i think both og xbox and 360 were NTSC consoles 720x400p vs widescreen PAL of 720x576 with bandwidth limit on s-video due to its bus speed 720x400 (NTSC) and 720x576 (PAL)

      I mean, if you're happy that's fine. But it doesn't make what I said incorrect. Build quality is still a thing.

      @@AdamKoralik No you are incorrect. It's nothing to do with build quality (component quality maybe)
      You claimed if something is cheap its for a reason again no incorrect many things are cheaper doesn't make it poor build quality it depends on each product some companies like to make a big mark up.

      @@nicmonberg5974 I mean, I'm objectively correct. Pound cables are built poorly, that savings is passed on to the customer sure, but so is the problem. But if you're happy with your purchase, by all means enjoy it.

    Whenever I'm looking at some widget/gizmo/upgrade for sixth gen stuff, my first search is always "_blank thing_ adam koralik"
    Think you'll do a video on the Electron Shepherd Xbox2HDMI when the orders go out?

      Possibly, I don't know if I'm on a list for one or anything.

    Third usage case: Maybe it's to cater to less developed, adjacent markets, possibly their own in Turkey?
    I couldn't find any concrete info on it, but it's not outside the realm of possibility of a country like Turkey to still be some years behind tech-wise, especially since countries around it tend to follow suit. Even my home country of Ukraine still has MANY CRT TVs, especially in hotels; Hell, East Ukraine still uses SECAM (How much of the infrastructure supporting it still exists in the wake of the 2nd invasion is very difficult to determine, however), and Armenia still mostly uses Windows XP. Plus, even Turkey's wi-fi, per my experience, was only 1G, and this was at a major airport.
