- In this video: Kate discovers a five-pound Montana agate hiding in the silt!
Kate, Kava and her son Tor hit the river on New Year's Day for some winter rockhounding. They return to a gravel bar on the Yellowstone River that they have hunted many times before - but there is always something new to find. From agatized wood to an incredible banded jasper, from fossilized coral to a monster agate, the day proved full of treasure.

Such a good hunt! Thanks for bringing us along!
Thanks much for joining us! :)
Tor is such a good son. I love his channel. He truly is an artist.
He is, I do too, and he is. :D Thanks, Margie!
I'm so impressed with your beautiful finds, but I'm even more impressed that you can turn them over in one hand while doing the video!
:D Practice!
Beautiful finds! Those slabs were so pretty! You know you raised your kids right when they offer to carry your backpack full of rocks home👍! Loved the ending of the video, Tor is a good sport! Thanks for sharing the beautiful rocks, and the chuckles at the end😂😂👍 I enjoy Tor’s channel, it’s fun to visit all those parks when your stuck at home.
I'm glad you enjoy both of our channels - thanks, Donna.
First off Tor you are a sweetheart for carrying Mom's rocks :) Secondly...Wow Kate !! That piece of jasperized wood was so beautiful. The vivid colored bands were so gorgeous :) Third Jim and Kava you made me smile with the drone jumping Kava was doing :) Thanks All for this lovely video :)
I'm so glad you enjoyed it. :)
O Kate!!!! Thank you SO MUCH for showing usthe cut-open view of that Manificent Gigantic Montana Agate immediately upon showing us the finding of it. I have to tell you -- I gasped & shed a coupla tears--It is SO MAGNIFICENT. Could be THE BEST ONE I'VE EVER SEEN, EVER!!!!
I was stunned. :)
I love watching episodes of The Wonderful Adventures of Kate and Tor. :)
:D Thanks for watching!
What a good son!!!!! As always, the pet wood was fantastic!! I kept thinking that it couldn’t get better than that piece, but it did!! That super raised grain one...then the baby burl!! What a fun day!! That huge chunky agate was beyond stunning
Thanks, Rockin. :) It was a good day.
That slice with the darker colors and banding was awesome! Thanks!
Thanks for watching! 😊
Love the inside of the 5 pounder great find👍
It was amazing! I was so confused about the outside - it was a good learning experience. :)
That jasperized petrified wood is really beautiful with so many colors! Get a 2nd squirt bottle and keep it on your car or in your backpack :)
It's winter here, so the water freezes. Someone told me to use salt water, but I've never actually tried it.
@@KatyDidRocks Or just a bit of rubbing alcohol in the water bottle. Hmmmm ;)
That was very thoughtful of your son.
He is a good guy.
Wind’s howling here! Thanks for the vid, but stay safe, too!
That wind was CRAZY! Be well, Robin.
I find the scenery just as beautiful as the rocks!
It really is. Thanks for watching!
I'm glad you're not my mom!!!
Great video! I'm finding you rock hounds to be very interesting and dedicated people!
:D Tor is a great son. Thanks for watching!
Beautiful finds as always. Thanks for taking us along.
And thank you for coming along!
The wavey looking layered rock (11:36) is possibly a stromatolite/algal matt fossil. Find a lot of those along Yellowstone. Love your channel!
I agree! :)
What a pleasant surprise it is to be able to rockhound on the river in Montana on January 1. What a nice variety of materials. FYI: I like what you have done with your intro. Keep the videos coming.
Thank you, Ed. Yes, it is amazing that we are having such a mild winter.
The weather has been kind to all you Montana "stone dawgs"! Great video, Kate!
❤️🇨🇦❤️
Thanks, Kerin. Yeah, the winter has been nuts!
Such a good son he is. Nice rocks!
He really is. :)
Happy New Year Katy, Katyson, Mr. Did and Kava! Have a wonderful 2021 and I keep looking forward to your wonderful videos and beautiful rocks!
The same to you - thanks for watching!
What a find!. I hope to see what all you did with it. Havagudun Kate and Thor too.
:) Thanks, E.D.
I love your videos .Thank you so much for sharing!
Thanks for watching! ;)
Wow Katy you found some awesome stuff.
Thanks, Leona, it was a great hunt!
Katy! You knocked another agate out of the way when you picked up your chunky agate!
It's possible. It also might have been a tan rock with light on it. :)
You have done it again Kate! that jasperized wood is very impressive, and the chunk of super nice grained petrified wood at 6:15 is just a work of art. I love how it looks even in the rough. Some things should never be tumbled or cut! Guess it turned out to be a pretty good day for CHUNKY rocks lol
:D It was a good day, to be sure.
Very cool!
I was amazed!
Katy thet is so cool that your son has his own channel!!!! I gave him my sub!!! I love all your informative videos. Have a great day!!!
Thank you! Tor's videos are beautiful and well-crafted - you may find something that's good to show your class. :)
Awesome finds, wow that agate !!!
Thank you! It was such an odd looking thing - it was cool to see what was inside.
Amazing finds!
Thank you, Mary. :)
Wow!
:)
Katy - you need a "go" bag. Always in your vehicle, ready to GO! with duplicates of all the goodies you need to pack and usually forget. You refill when you return from your trip and stick it back in your car.
At 5:03, on the left side of the video about 1/3ish of the way up from the bottom is what looks like a cut agate! a Blue one. How bizarrre!
You are 100% right. :)
It's awesome
:) I agree - thanks for watching!
Super,Super, agates!!!
Yes, they were! Thanks for watching. :)
Go Tor!
:D I was thankful for his presence!
Great finds. Happy new year
Happy new year!
That has got to be a top five day!!! Chunky!
It was really good, for sure. I couldn't believe what was inside that agate. I just couldn't figure out why it looked so weird - it was because it had a band of black inside the rind. Now I know. :)
That’s why they are cut open!
Beautiful finds ! Subbed your channel can't wait to see more adventures !
Thanks for the sub! ;)
Super gostei Kat...great vídeo.
Obrigada. :)
What a nice video! Thank you! Wow! That mountain climb! Tor? More like THOR! :-) Maybe you should have a doggie pack for his :-) water ;-)
Happy New Year!!!
:) Glad you enjoyed it!
Happy New year to you all! You found some righteous rocks today!
Happy new year to you too!
The ending was very cool
:) If you liked that, you definitely should check out Tor's channel - his adventure footage is amazing.
Also, thanks!
Love rocks also, and fossils! Just wondered if you ever cut the bigger ones into fourths so you can see how the designs run differently? On some of your cuts, I find myself wondering what the other direction cut might look like. Love your love of rocks too!! Rock hunting is my tranquility! Keep on rockin!😳😂💜
I have not - but my oldest son wants me to cut a cube out of one. Maybe someday!
I hope you have plenty of storage for this year! An old saying for the New Year is to spend the day as you intend to go on..chunky chunky chunky :) Bless Tor, I hope he didn't hurt himself with that minor(?) rockfall on the way out :)
Nah, the rocks just went back into the pack. He's out at Yellowstone right now, making more videos!
No injuries! Think mom was more at risk from the rockfall than me. ;-)
Ok I finally got jaspagate down and now you hit with quasper!
:D Jaspagate isn't actually my word - but quasper definitely is.
Sons are good!
I need to bring along all three of them and equip them each with a pack. :D
Are you ever concerned about bears when you're out along the river? Maybe Kava is a deterrent?
Hey, Linda! There aren't very many bears in our area, and the ones that come aren't usually at the river. Kava does keep watch, though, and makes sure nothing comes close without me knowing. I would say mountain lions are a bigger danger, but they usually move around at night. The worst thing we've encountered is a porcupine!
I want to see you make cabs!
I leave most of the cab-making to my husband, as he is the careful and precise one. :)
That's a pretty chunky way to kick off 21!
It really was! I was so surprised with what was inside!
Camera shaking too much😢
❤️
:)
ive read, that there is a tufa, a cave stalagmite like stuff that they said looks like coral , kinda looked like that , I think they said it had awesome travertine like growth lines ...or could be coral for sure, Montana had shallow inland seas they say.
dogs are my favorite people.
I think probably coral - I'm going to cut it to see the inside. It's silicated, so it's probably really pretty. :)
Exactly right.
Frame 11:42 That rock is smiling at you. I see the whole face, eyes, nose, smiling mouth. Boy you sure can pick-m ! :~)
Wonderful! :)
I have to say I prefer Montana pet.wood over Arizona or CA. just more agate to it and color, and crystallization. Quasper makes good sense. this vid is full of so many good finds getting a little jelly ...stone ; )
the burl !!!
You should come up to Montana once we can move around safely! I'll show you some good spots. :)
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
:D
Batunya bagus bagus.
Terima kasih!
👍👍👍
Is this west of Bundy bridge?
No, it's near Forsyth. :)
@@KatyDidRocks hehe good. Just making sure you weren’t stomping on my ground 😝
Good morning ma'am... Is agates and jasper are for sale at your place? I am jerry Rivera from the Philippines... I began my rock hounding two months ago... We have plenty of agatize wood in our place, but no one dares to collect... Thank you.... And good luck...
Hello! I have rocks for sale at my Etsy store, www.etsy.com/shop/KatyDidRocks. Thanks for watching!
you need to rent a great pyreanese and put some saddel bags on him !
This is not a terrible idea. Or perhaps a small pony.
How many people you got caring all them rocks??
I think not enough! :)
Hello, how are you
:)
Lunker!
Yep, CHUNKY! :)
It seems like you haven't had much snow this year. 11:42 very pretty!
It has been a crazy winter. We did get snow a few days after this hunt, but it's supposed to be 50 degrees again today. Good for rock hunting, bad for the planet!
You need a pet lama to help pack rock
Now THAT’S an idea….
I would do anything to go find some chunky chunky finds I need some rock therapy
Rock therapy is ALWAYS good.
With all the petrified, agatized, and jasperized wood, you should tumble them!!!!!!!!!
I'm working on it!
Sweet!!!!
Wouldn’t it be nice to have a drone that can pick up about 200 pounds of rock. You would have to bring it in on a trailer. They do make them.’
:'D Then the problem is, what do I do with 200 pounds of rocks four times a month!
Slice them up and use them as pavers in your backyard walkways or planter boxes. One old boy had put what he sliced up on a bench and used colored filler quick set to fill in the gaps. Then covered the whole bench in a sealer. Looked aw.
So many chunkers! That slab was amazing. The colors! I love it💕
P.S. Check your email😉
Checking. Also, I was blown away by the pattern. It made me understand why I thought it was strange looking on the outside.
@@KatyDidRocks It's ones like that, that made me fall in love. They take the nicest shine too.✨
If you zip up the backpack you won't lose rocks!!!
Yeah, the problem is that the backpack won't zip, because I have a bathroom wastebasket stuffed into it to hold the rocks. Usually, though, it's not an issue. :)
