Tony Banks rocks! 💪
The piano on this piece is fantastic!!!
Nope. Last I checked he was wearing a deep purple shirt and is not to be trusted.
Everyone talks about Wakeman and Emerson. Tony never seems to get included in the discussion. He's right up there with them.
@@greethe tony's a great composer but technique wise he doesnt hold a candle to those two giants
@@m1losk1and those two giants does not hold a candle to Tony composition wise, and for me that what matters in music, and not crazy technique. Rick Wakeman close though. Emerson is great keyboard player, nowhere near those two
Phil Collins is sublime, but Peter Gabriel is divine. Together the band collectively made creative music that has never been and never will be matched. Like dreams brought to life.
I love the heavy ass bass, drumming, and Peter Gabriel is an absolute madman.
This album is about Peter’s neurosis
Was fortunate to see them do this album live twice. Once from the front row! Yes I'm 70.
saw them live also, i´m only 64 and i could only go there, because my older brother took me with him, haha.... :-)
unforgettable!
I’ve seen a later version of Genesis ( and then there were three) and PG numerous times, some of my favorite shows
I only was able to see Peter Gabriel once as part of his SO anniversary tour. But this was years after he left Genesis.
I'm 18 years old...
you're lucky, heard it was one-of-a-kind.
Hi Mr. Sheedy i hope 2023 finds you well and you're able to keep enjoying this awesome song.
Sitting in my girlfriend's room late on a Friday night around 1981 , she's asleep, and I'm up listening to the radio and this song comes on .
She is my first real love .
This song always takes me back there .
We lived the same life, it became a Cape Cod nightly ritual.
One of the greatest albums ever recorded. Thanks Genesis 🙏
One of my magic 7 to make videos at a time i knew nothing on how to make or use a pc ..i think i pulled it off with years imagining how visuals would look as a 14 yr old with headphones ..ive wrestled with the idea of making more videos from the album which would be a gradual expression of the story line ..i wanted to start it with a FLYs eye view of broadway ( hard to find such footage ) ..anyway .. check out my broadway melody >:-) ruclips.net/video/7yvuyicbzfk/видео.html ... ruclips.net/video/UQkcEm0y570/видео.html

Rael live forever
A extremely beautiful song by a prolific band... Long live the seventies arena rock circuit
I have loved Genesis since 1974, I grew up in Cleveland many shows.
Me too!!
Not Cleveland but since '74
A masterpiece. To this day.
In my honest opinion, this is the only piece of work by Genesis that completely crystallizes and stands forth. A triumph!
This is the Genesis White Album.
No doubt
Oh it's FAR better than the White Album
I love Mike's Bass on this song (and the entire album)... My absolute favorite album of all time... And one of my favorite things in the world in general
Mike Rutherford is an incredible bassist
@@EthePianoMan Why is he so underrated and not up there with Geddy Lee, and Chris Squire? Sounds like he’s using a Rickenbacker 4001 on this track.
Doesnt slap and isn't a frontman... that's all. Rutherford is quality
Couldn't agree more!
@@bassplayer807 Mike's bass wasn't as prevalent in Genesis as Squire's on Yes. There are quite a few songs where he foregoes playing bass in favour of rhythm or 12 string guitar. Don't get me wrong, I love his bass playing, but Squire's bass was often the focus of a song. In Genesis (at least Peter Gabriel era), it was always the vocals (or keys).
Masterpiece, they were at the peak..it opened wild to what was coming..punk, new age , new wave ..whatever, this album was the birth of something
On the mark dude
Agreed 💯
Punk rock was among others, reaction to the music of bands like Yes and Genesis, so i don't get the connection...
And the lamb lies down on Broadway.
Early morning Manhattan,
Ocean winds blow on the land.
Movie-Palace is now undone,
The all-night watchmen have had their fun.
Sleeping cheaply on the midnight show,
It's the same old ending - time to go.
Get out!
It seems they cannot leave their dream.
There's something moving in the sidewalk steam,
And the lamb lies down on Broadway.
Nightime's flyers feel their pains.
Drugstore take down the chains.
Metal motion comes in bursts,
The gas station can quench that thirst.
Suspension cracked on unmade road
The trucker's eyes read 'Overload'
And out on the subway,
Rael Imperial Aerosol Kid
Exits into daylight, spraygun hid,
And the lamb lies down on Broadway.
The lamb seems right out of place,
Yet the Broadway street scene finds a focus in its face.
Somehow it's lying there,
Brings a stillness to the air.
Though man-made light, at night is very bright,
There's no whitewash victim,
As the neons dim, to the coat of white.
Rael Imperial Aerosol Kid
Wipes his gun - he's forgotten what he did,
And the lamb lies down on Broadway.
Suzanne tired her work all done,
Thinks money - honey - be on - neon.
Cabman's velvet glove sounds the horn
And the sawdust king spits out his scorn.
Wonder women you can draw your blind!
Don't look at me! I'm not your kind.
I'm Rael!
Something inside me has just begun,
Lord knows what I have done,
And the lamb lies down on Broadway.
On Broadway

This is one record that may me too much on the first few listens, but when you finally get it...
Dude, They made this in their mid-twenties, think about that.
Yeah, they were so young when they formed up- I heard Phil was only 21 or something. It blows my mind. And Phil and Peter harmonize so very well together, even more evident on succeeding albums, like Selling England By The Pound. Saw them several times in the 80's, they were one of my biggest musical influences. Love 70's prog rock.
concept albums ahoy! a majestic opening to a classic album.
Did anyone noticed that they are publishing every single track aside from the 1st album? Damn they hate that...
I think it's not because they don't like it (which may be true), it's a copyright thing, as the rights to From Genesis To Revelation do not belong to the band, they belong to Jonathan King, their first producer.
because it sounds like Beatles ripoff
@@DanielTapNose Thank you for the explanation..
@@fillgollinsdergroarticheme8442 Actually, Genesis intentionally tried to rip off another band, they called it a "Bee Gees pastiche", as they knew Jonathan King liked the Bee Gees very much. The songs are all written by Genesis, but most of the arrangements were done by Jonathan King, particularly the string section.
@@fillgollinsdergroarticheme8442 Which band in the late 60's and early 70's didn't sound like a Beatle ripoff..

The blend of Tony`s magical keyboard work and Mike`s super angry bass tone is just fantastic!

A classic album, a work of art, a masterpiece, l quite like this album! 😏
One of the most importent albums in the world, for ever....
i m p o r t a n t
True.
Someone help me out, please.
I bought this album when it came out, I was 12 years old. Ever since I first heard this track, I have always been unable to listen to the line: "Rael Imperial Aerosol Kid Wipes his gun - he's forgotten what he did," without hearing Frank Spencer from the British sitcom of the time, Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em. It's the "he's forgotten what he did" bit.
Please tell me I am not alone in hearing this.
I will never ever tire of listening to this album. A true fucking masterpiece.
Now THAT'S what i call a long title... love this song, playing it in the piano is so much fun!
(This is a continuation from a previous comment where i said that "The Battle of Epping Forest" had a long title)
Edit 28: The longest official title on a Genesis album is "Old Medley (Dance On A Volcano, Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, The Musical Box, Firth Of Fifth, I Know What I Like)" from "The Way We Walk" lol
You must be a good player lol
You must not be familiar with Bowie's "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars"
Yeah gotta admit, playing the intro of this song was a lot of fun.
@@thomasfhollandmaybe I'll learn it.
@@PatrickLedwig Another one of Banks songs that’s fun to play is Firth of Fifth. Similar playing techniques.
Simply the Best concept album ever created in human history. 👏👏👏

Agreed, it's an amazing album. You don't know where it's going next. The creativity is off the scale. And just when you think it can't get any better they hit you with Carpet Crawlers.
Classic
Great album! MASTERPIECE. GENESIS always!
I saw him live and the audience passed him around like a beach ball while he was singing
The album has always been pure genius for me. Realizing that Banks especially in retrospect came across resenting the experience the most out of the band, even bitter about it. The album remains as a wonderful experience that will always be one of the most profound experiences for me as a 17 year old. They all pulled it off wonderfully, but I've always thought it would not have happened without Gabriel. Regardless, there are geniuses at work here, Hackett, and Banks especially, and they were all in their 20's. It would not have happened at all if they were not all aboard for the thing.
2021 Genesis and Phil still THE BEST. From Paris, with all my love.
Phil was just the drummer back then, Peter Gabriel was the real artistic genius.
Respect.

Loved this song since I was 10 years old. The vocals of Gabriel and Collins together in this song are amazing.
They both sing on this track?, I didn't know
No matter how many times I hear it, it still sounds fresh possibly due to it's immense variety from a road song to something more peaceful it truly has it all
This is my favorite song and my neighbors favorite song in summer!
I can only dream what a modern re-recording of this album would sound like, if they did to it the same treatment they gave to Carpet Crawlers 1999. It would be the best album ever.
I've listened to this since it came out and am still figuring out the meaning of each song and the album as a whole. At least MY definition (for now).
Question: What is the meaning of the "Carpet Crawlers" to you?
@@woodzieniles9072 This is the first time I even considered that question. From the video clip I got the impression of birth. Now checking online people talk about conception. I think it makes sense.
I really liked the one of four versions of 'Carpet Crawlers' being Carpet Crawlers 1999. It has a very even tempo.
You just need to "up" your stereo game, get something that plays down to 30 hz, with a lot of wattage, and the original is just fine.
It defeats me how a band could produce an utter masterpiece like this - and then immediately lose the lead singer! Finished, just like that...
I know they soldiered on without Peter, but it wasn't the same for me. Sorry folks, I know millions still loved them afterwards.
I still liked A Trick of the Tail
It's was awesome after Peter but very different. This album is something completely its own. One of the best ever period!!!!! This and quadrophonic.

@Susan Reed Um, I do not wish to be rude, though, it is "Drugstore takes down their chains" - This stated, Monsieur Gabriel does have an interesting way of changing up on some spellings. Also, I shall have to check and see the lyrics in my album to be sure in this case he spelled the word "their" correctly.

I was 4 years old my babysitter brought it over. I became a fan of the band and both singer's. Gabriel and Then Collins. What an amazing band. Great Memories On Broadway! Broadway became home for me and the art's. Amazing album. Hell yeah ok the band didn't understand Gabriel's outlandish customs and so on but it was art. No different from Alice Cooper. It seems in the end Gabriel found his own style and spot in music and so did Genesis. Love them both. I'll just will never understand why the band was so cold to Gabriel and his wife when his daughter was born and almost died. They didn't give him or his wife's support? That's always bothered me. Even in passing on tour I always think about that one.
Sensational piano intro and great rithmic section!

When I first heard this album back in the 70s I found it very different to the Genesis I had been listening to, but slowly it grew on me as I read the story in the inserts and played it over and over and over again!
