I think he was aware of Vhagar before the battle too and has probably seen her flying overhead a few times on her way back to kings landing since its not too far away from Rooks rest. Knowing that Vhagar is on the opposing side, he knew she wasn't there to make friends

When you think about it, Vhagar has had the largest number of riders of any known Targaryen dragon; first Visenya, then Baelon, then Laena and now Aemond. Most dragons only lived to have one or two, but she endured so long, and ironically she was the youngest and least famous of the three original dragons of the Conquest.
Most people suspected that Rhaenys just realized that if she fled, she would likely be chased and if the fight brought to Dragonstone it would turn even disastrously.

Is it just me or is dragon fire really inconsistent? Sometimes you can fly straight through it without a problem. Other times, it burns dragon wings. But if it hits you on the ground, your flesh and bones turn to ash.
To me it looked that the dragons locking and spinning created a vortex that protects them from the worst of the flame. And the dragons were well aware of that tactic, really cool when you think of it, they know how to negate the advantage of flame and make it a game of chicken to see which dragon disengages before they hit the ground.
Aegon never ceases to prove just how inept he is and totally unworthy of the crown sitting upon his brow. Aemond on the other hand is worthy in my opinion.
They should call Sunfyre most tough dragon refuse to die (with ridiculous show about him) , not most beautiful dragon ever, specially is TV series version his stomach few times scratched badly , punched through inside of it , its enough to disable dragon for weeks alone, after that he burned and cooked by Rhaegars too strong fire (who could melt both hardest stones like those at Harenhal castle, and even Valerian steel armor who Aegon wear that day)and turned to like well done cooked steak after that he had terrible fall from sky, which is enough to kill dragons too (not all of them , we know those big ones like Vhaegar will survive unless they fall from much hight altitude (like that happen at Gods eye battle with Caraxes )but its too ridiculous he will live, even while one of his wings tore apart completely too! and can gain some of his strength later!!! but that legendary battle hardened Melyse die just by crashing to ground by fall of sky and some of Vhaegar s Weight over her too (all three will fall at books but just Melyse die!!!) at tv shows too, thats right Vhaegar is bigger with bigger head and stronger jaw, but couldn't bite Melyse neck like they showed,cause Melyse has one specific difference with other dragons, she has sharp horn both around he head (those thick and sharp big ones) and rest of he neck has alot of those horns too (smaller but still big and sharp enough to stop even Vhaegars jaw to cant bite it (in real ones if he bit her, he would lose some of his teeth and will suffer much pain cause those horns go through his mouth)that scenario they showed worked on many other dragons (specially Caraxes with very long neck with no horns and thin) but Melyse,and Vhaegar couldn't hide behind that little castle in reality is smaller than it self!

Dragon fire hitting other dragons is another story. It is why it turn into a bloody melee in the sky
