as someone said, this is the Special AKA. including Rhoda Dakar from the Bodysnatchers, I played in a band (Thisr2Tone) with her and nik walsh supporting the Proclaimers many moons ago, she's still got it baby
I left school in 81 and never fully appreciated the amazing contribution the specials made to 70's and 80's music. In later years, I so wish I had embraced them as the music legend they truly are!
I have been looking for this video since it aired, like ONCE, literally, on MTV back in 1984. I have thought of this video ever since. It was amazing to me then, and I see, today, why. Thank you so very much for uploading this video - I didn't think it could be found! I love you!
@Michael It was so obscure, in the coolest of ways. Moody, brilliant. It was there, and then it was gone. In the late 90s, I saw these guys in a small bar by the beach in San Diego. I actually flirted w/them. Don't know what I said as I was on autopilot. Wow. Another Life Goal = ✔
I think it's cos they're still 'The Specials' and this is definitely a different vibe. If it had just been an altogether different namesake band, people wouldn't have been a bit taken aback I imagine when this came out, having been used to the Specials previous discography. I agree though this is brilliant in its own right.
apparently this was originally supposed to be the guide vocal that one of the actual singers was to rerecord but couldn't actually nail it and they decided his vocal actually worked better. When you listen to the rest of the album it's very serious and quite heavy themes... it's almost as if all the humour has been condensed into this one track
This is an excellent track from the mind of the great Jerry dammers. I saw him with the spatial aka orchestra support madness at O2 arena London they were incredible.
Toothless bite. Total genius. Maybe the best annotated song of all time. The brass sets the simplicity afire. If you are reading this and listening, and you want to make magic… this is the template 👊😎❤️❤️❤️😉
RIP Terry Hall, gone at just 63, truly unbelievable and terrible news. I saw him after The Specials reunited in 2009, at the Hammersmith Apollo. He stood stock still in the middle of the stage, while the crowd went wild. Just brilliant. Also saw Jerry Dammers alone supporting Madness at Wembley, what a shame he couldn't work it out with the rest of the the Specials and with his old mate Terry Hall, I am sure he regrets this now. This song is one of their underrated ones, and completely brilliant.
I hate it when I go out to the black sweater club in my sailor outfit, just looking for a quick drink, and then an alien lands and tries to steal my girlfriend. Still, that's Shoreditch for you.
Steviemtothec Look, Steve, I don't know why you're doing this. It was a drunken one-night stand, I told you at the time that I wasn't looking for a relationship, and yet you keep pulling passive-aggressive shit like this in what I can only assume is the hope of shaming me into getting back together with you. It's not going to happen. Move on.
Dammers always made his videos entertaining with his artistry and humour. He also made the Rat Race video amusing by dressing up as a female music teacher with hair in a bun and then capped it all off by smiling at the camera with that famous toothless grin. Legend.
@@chrisackerley1842 I watched 1984 Top Of The Pops yesterday - Paul McCartney in his naff stage, Neil from The Young Ones, Chaka Khan doing some disco shit.... There was a lot of dross too.

I've been listening to the specials all my life when I first heard gangsters on the radio when I was 3 doing an electrician job with my dad and I went mad
Jerry Dammers. Such an all round Top Muso. What a shame the beef has been carried on into a new century. You know, you can say "the door is open" but, if party invitations are only sent to certain people, only those people will attend. I reiterate: What a shame. Dammers belongs in The Specials. Just can’t get why Jerry Dammers is so underrated. Everything he does is iconic. Plus his humour is legendary. Love you, mate!
This song is creepy!
I don't know, cause he was an ugly band partner? That causes the band got separated..
His name is too close to Jeffrey Dahmer's
@@SpyguyStudios That made me laugh as I was thinking the same thing. Pretty sure Jerry would be more fun to hang out with, though.

I've been binge watching stuff by the Specials, and I don't think I'd ever seen this! I love everything about it. The dance moves at 1:56!!

The girl's haircut was the coolest 80's style. Loved it then, and love it now!
Same here - I first saw it in high school 1986!
It's the 1920's bob haircut that was popular with the flappers.
Twiggy, Petula Clark, Audrey Hepburn…
