Initially I thought some of the stones under the window were OK but after I saw your handy work, I have to say it looks so much better. Worth all the noise, sweat and back ache!! Bravo.
A suggestion from someone who worked in Lads aping for 42 years, many times alone. Next time you need to get a large stone into the wheelbarrow, lay it down next to the stone and roll the stone up to the wheelbarrow. Now you have leverage to lift the wheelbarrow up. If you have a helper, one on either side makes it much easier. A back saver
The arm props under the wheelbarrow are great for grabbing, pulling up toward your head, and easily dumping heavy things. Another trick we have used to move giant boulders is to use moving straps-I am a petite wimp and helped my husband lift a fridge using the straps without issue. A German Mason taught me to drench the stones in water before adhering them to the concrete as it makes them more porous , and adheres them more effectively, but maybe that was due to the types of rocks we were using. Just here trying to save people’s backs one video at a time, lololol. 🤣
First, Ricky kudos for keeping a straight face (with only a fleeting smirk) at the "where's my hole" comment. Second, using all the less desirable pieces of the stone for the ramp makes Victoria the star of this day's vlog. Well done you two.
Ouch!!! 😮 You scared me when you actually lifted that huge stone 🤪 Your backs are precious you know! Next time bring the barrow Down to the stone and simply roll it onto the barrow then its MUCH easier to both push & pull the barrow up onto its wheel- hey presto 🎉
When you want to move something very heavy like a rock into the wheelbarrow, tip the barrow on it's side and then roll the rock into the barrow then right the barrow. It's still hard work but much safer on your body than just taking the whole weight of the rock. You have to look after yourselves so you can continue your beautiful work.
Victoria, you did a great job compacting that soil over the rocks for the ramp. The next rain will tell whether or not the soil will stay in place. Very nice stone work under the window as well.
I'm glad to hear that! When I made a similar ramp I had chunks of turf from another place and put those on top. Within a season it was smooth sailing on it and never muddy. Great job too on the rebuild! Even that dark shot in darkness shows it'll look great!❤
My favourite hard working couple, working so hard to making their future home . I love your attitude and attention to detail. I am thrilled to see you subscribed numbers growing steadily. I wish you both the best. Lilian Wollongong Australia.❤️
You are both doing a great job on your homestead. As I was watching the difficulty with the wheelbarrow, I kept thinking that a new one was in order. Lo, and behold, Ricky presents a new wheelbarrow! There's nothing like proper tools and equipment to do a superb job.
Absolutely! Having the right tool for the job makes the world of difference and trying to be smart with which ones you can get the most bang for your buck out of too! 😃
You two just amaze me with your can-do attitudes, good spirits, and great connection with each other. No half-measures, either: if it takes bashing a hole, then a hole shall be bashed! The stone work looks very expert. The seedlings, potato plants, and flowering trees are just wonderful.
Andrius and 'G' of "Portugal It Is" have been lifting huge stone boulders to build the walls up for a kitchen extension. They are a great team. 'G' has the best greenhouse of seedlings. She sure knows how to garden without all the fuss and bother. They make do with what they have and are great at recycling, too! I bet you both would get a lot of handy building and gardening skills from them.
Everything that you cut, prune, weed, don’t need - that is plant based, chop, mulch and compost. Add local manure and keep moist (not wet). Plenty of mulching once beds are planted. Tickety-boo👍
We have always grown tomatoes as well as a lot of different vegetables. Our favourite variety of tomatoes are Purple Cherokee, Black Krim, Red & Black and Green and Black. Good luck
Wonderful encouragement Victoria - "Use your core!" as Ricky attempts a hernia-inducing push on the wheelbarrow! Girl, you are all heart! So good to see fruits of your labour emerging from the depths of winter - sunshine makes everyone smile! Thank you for taking the time and trouble to edit and upload, your videos make for great viewing here in the pouring rain!
You could hide a secret message in the wall, in a bottle or something like that! There’s a tradition in Germany where you hide a capsule in the foundations of a new building with a newspaper, some coins or other personal trinkets. Maybe there is something similar in other countries? You are putting in so much work to give it new life! Hope you’re back and cold are better!
What a delightful idea! Kind of like a time capsule ...even 1000 yrs. from now before it is seen again & hopefully deciphered if in English ...mind mind-boggling!!
From day one, those windows and the front door made me fall in love with this gingerbread house. I appreciate the way you reflect on things and never go for the easy way out. The rebuilt wall is superb. Great respect to Victoria 's phisical and moral support.
Never thought of it as a gingerbread house before but now you've said it, it's all I can see! Maybe that's what we should call it "the gingerbread house" 😊
I remember my Dad doing the same thing on a stone chimney that stuck out into my bedroom. He decided it would make me more space if he removed it. As the job went on he got further and further into the wall, until eventually he was taking down the barn that was built onto our house. An enjoyable video guys that provoked my memories. Thanks for those memories. Take care both of you. Matt
What that makes me think of, as a farmer, is a hog house. They usually have windows over openings for the pigs to come and go thru. And there is usually a small sliding or lifting door for when you need to lock them in the building. And one on each side would make sense because you want to keep the farrowing sows separate.
Thanks for the insight Tammy 👍 Love the idea that pigs might have once lived in there! 🐷 Do the pig-openings usually have large vertical stones either side?
Ricky your stonework is amazing. I also thought that it did not look too bad to leave but you are truly transforming that area under the window to such a high standard. You and Victoria work so hard and we love your videos. I do watch a few other Chateau channels but when I came across yours right at the start I loved the difference. It was in a different country, it was a home and a property and I just love love the renovation of this little cottage and you both work so well together with a sense of humour and great collaboration. I enjoy the variety of jobs you both do around your property and you are one channel that my husband is also interested in watching all the time as he isn’t t keen on others that I watch. Well done guys! Watching you from Western Australia 👋
Hi, I recommend you watch "Portugal It Is" Like Ricky and Victoria they are a wonderful couple renovating a stone building on their land, while living in a caravan. They also work the land growing olives, vine's fruit and vegetables with much humor. I am sure you will enjoy their adventures too.
Just wondered, couldn’t you use the rubble from under the window for the ramp, just empty it on top and compact, would hold up to wet weather better than soil. Great decision to rebuild the wall underneath the window, looks like the rest now. Best wishes from Australia.
Its a brave brave person who intends to knock a hole in a wall that's standing firm. If you end up with lots of zucchini, consider grinding them up and putting 1 cup per a zip lock bag and freeze them. When you feel the urge, make zucchini bread. It's a lovely way to use up extra zucchini at the end of summer, and the bread is wonderful (Think sweet bread - great with a cup of tea!) See you next week! Blessed Be!
I have enjoyed David Mitchell reading his own book "Unruly" - described as 'horrible histories for grown-ups' it is factual, funny, irreverent and, despite having a chapter for each 'monarch' from King Arthur to Elizabeth I (39 of them!!) it does not spoil it if you want to skip a few hundred years and go back later. Hilarious way to learn quite a lot about British history and more besides.!! Enjoy the pointing - great job by the way.
Your property is absolutely stunning! I have to say, Poppy 1000% has my heart. We lost our terrier mix Teddy at the end of 2022, he and Poppy look so alike! So glad her and your Teddy landed with awesome pet parents like you both. Sending much love from Arizona ❤🙏
Congratulations! It took us 30 years and me putting my foot down to FINALLY get a second wheelbarrow!! But I warn you, it didn't take him long to start using my cool new wheelbarrow for his buckets of mortar. I recommend leaving it always full of something or other so it looks like more work than it's worth not to use the old one. 🤣🤣
😂 Gravel was put in ‘my’ 😉wheelbarrow yesterday which resulted in a couple of minor dings! …but mortar is one step too far!! 😂 I like the ‘keep it full’ top tip 👍
Next time you mix the soil transfer some to a container and rehydrate it that way. Don’t get it too wet..it is just right when you squeeze some soil in your hand and it holds together lightly. Then put the soil in your trays. That way it is not too dry as you are planting. The purpose for dampening the soil first is so when you water it the water is taken up better in the soil and stays hydrated better between watering so the seeds can germinate. Have fun with your garden!
Oh my goodness guys, you are giving yourselves so much more work. I think you have made the right decision given that we know you will make a wonderful job of the wall. Take care both of you, see. Ind your back Ricky, and Victoria great job on the ramp,. See you are both amazing.❤️❤️❤️👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Great work guys. Love what you're doing. I'm a Brit in Australia and we grow Black Russian tomatoes here. I'm sure they would grow well in Portugal too. They are very tasty. Hope you can get some.
This is going to be the BEST little stone house in Portugal! Ricky, your stonework is awesome! Victoria, I think your garden is going to be beautiful, and bountiful! Thanks for the video, guys ❤️
You’ll not get the seed starting mix moist enough by spraying! Put some in a bucket and pour at least two of those water bottles you were using in. Mix it with your hands & you’ll probably still need more water. You want a handful to hold together when squeezed without dripping water. Best of luck 💚
It was lovely to find a new video from you both this morning. Great work guys, pretty scary to see you removing those stones and concrete from below the window Ricky, glad nothing collapsed!! And good work on the slope Victoria, not east when you are feeling below par (get well soon) xx
Good choice to replace those stones under the window, you'll be happy you did it even if your back suffered. Loving the new wheelbarrow too, what a difference that will make to have a sturdy tool to help around the garden xx
Hi both, great decision to replace the stones, it’s looking much more in keeping with the rest of the masonry. Ricky asked about tips on pointing, a handy tool I’ve seen advertised for pointing patios & walls, it’s like a sealant cawking gun that you fill with mortar, and squeeze into the cracks to be pointed. They are advertised on Amazon etc. That would speed up the pointing, however the only downside I could foresee is that with the size of your gaps, you may be emptying the tube fairly quickly, and it may be a bit fiddly to be filling up. One advantage is you wouldn’t get mortar on your stonework. Only a thought. Paul, Swansea 👍👍
Greetings from Canada 🇨🇦. Perhaps a video of all of your bloopers (hence the hole comment) and others, could be a future episode in the making? 🤣😂. Love your videos and sense of humour!
Its so gratifying watching such a hard working couple making this a lovely homestead for both of you . Your enthusiasm, attitude, patience, creativity all come together for the best outcome in each of your projects. Keep up the good job. Feel better!
I always use seeds from my grocery store tomatoes. Just grab a few seeds, (don’t worry about the pulp) and put them on a tissue to dry out. Then in a few days or as long as you want you can just plant them in your seed raising mix. Very easy. Just keep the water up to them, if they dry out, just water then they should pick up again. Btw, zucchini’s, watermelon, pumpkin etc needs lots of space. Happy planting! 😊
Really makes one respect the old builders of the original stone house, moving and fitting all the large stones, after watching you move the... one little rock.
I watched you replacing the rocks under the window. Though I have never laid stones, I have watched others wet them before adding to the wall. Some just wet the stone with a sprayer, and others fill a bucket with water and soak them. You are doing a great job. Love the way you two work together ❤️ 💕 💓
Another tip about working with stones: put a shovel head underneath, then put a second shovel under the first. Angle the wheelbarrow’s front side towards the rock, and manipulate your shovel/levers to roll the boulder onto the wheelbarrow. I use rocks in my hobby of landscape gardening, and I don’t have a helper. The biggest boulders I’ve used weighed about 325 and 425 lb, respectively. Your boulder I reckon is at least 500, pushing 600 lb. How even two people shifted it shows how strong you both are! 🥰
My goodness, Victoria, you can certainly 'hunt bear with a stick'!!! That's an old saying from my youth, meant in a good way!!! You are very strong, just be careful not to hurt yourself! Ricky...the stonework is really lovely...so much work, but so worth it! Be careful of your back! Blessings to you both!!❤❤
what a great job you have done on the window Ricky, I was panicking when you and Victoria were trying to lift that huge stone that you were both going to do your backs damage. be very careful guys, could you not hire a mini digger to move all the stones? great job Victoria on the path you have done a great job and made all the more easier with your new wheelbarrow, it's the little things in life that means a lot., I wish your video's were twice a week , it's such a long time waiting in anticipation for a whole week, I know I'm being selfish as you have got tons of work to do, but I just feel like a kid waiting for Christmas to arrive hahahaha. keep up the good work guys, be careful not to hurt yourselves and see you nxt week x
Try listening to...silence, while you work. It's quite meditative doing a long chore such as this, and it will help you plan and get the job done faster. Try it. Love your videos. 🇨🇦
Wow, what an undertaking! It looked like you were playing a giant game of Jenga when dismantling under the window. I’de say that you definitely won that game! Good work! I think you will both be much happier knowing that it is now done properly. Best go and rest that back Ricky, and Victoria, I hope you manage to chase that cold away quickly. Have a great week. xx 💕🌷🇨🇦
Take the window out and form a concrete lintel of the thickness you require to support the new frame. Then brick up to it. Only an idea. Doing a fab job both of you. 👍👍👍
My fave? The speeded up Victoria ramp dance! What a delight to watch you two living the life. And your attitudes - wish you could bottle and sell it! Love and hugs from me in New Mexico USA. 🥰
Victoria & Ricky, The tiny house is looking really nice, your doing a great job, I know your working sooo hard! Im wondering if you tune in to this channel: Make Do Grow They are in Portugal as well. The last video is a tour of their garden! They are also rebuilding their stone house. You probably do, I just wondered! 😊👏👍 Great job!
The work on the stone wall looks really nice! It was definitely worth it to make this effort and take this risk. I thought that all that rubble and dust from the wall would have been good to fill up the pathway that Victoria created? Anyway, great progress again on your projects! Looking good 😊💪🏻
It is so nice to see spring where you are as we are still under snow here. ❄️ Ricky great job under the window. Keep at it, your hard work will pay off. Victoria keep us posted on your garden. You two are amazing. Have a great week. All the best from 🇨🇦 😊
So loving your channel and achievements so far. So entertaining, I think Victoria had the lifting edge on you Ricky😂😂😂. Another brilliant blog. Keep them coming.
Great job and very satisfying, good Audio Books - The Power of Now, Diary of a CEO, The Chimp Paradox, A Path through the Jungle, Meditations for Breaking the Habit of being you, Ego is the enemy, Four Thousand weeks (I could go on!!!). Have a brilliant week both.
Wow! Looks fantastic! Both the house and your path! I'm in my 60's now, and grew up on a farm in NY State and moved A LOT of rocks with a wheelbarrow as a kid. I know how HEAVY they are!! You both must have been exhausted after that long day! Especially with a cold!! Well done, both of you!! 👍👍🏡🏡
I know you said you don’t like fiction, but I just finished Cutting for Stone and enjoyed it tremendously. Might be appropriate title given your work ahead. 😂
Victoria, the garden is looking great! My favourite tomatoes are Arizona, Mikadо, De Barao, Marmande, Green Grape, Tim’s Black Ruffles, Blue Fire, Ivory Tears, Amethyst Jewel, Blue Fruit, Elberta Peach, Amur Tiger, Sweet Cream, Purple Fairy, Märchenengel, Desert Heart, Brandywine stripes, Gezahute Buhrer-Keel. Good luck!
I think you made the right decision as it looked more like concrete and small stones than the large ones to make a wall. Its looking really good, well done Ricky. Nice work on your slopped bank Victoria it not only looks much better but will be easier to use and be less precarious for you. Hope you are feeling better x
You two are certainly a pair of workers 😊I did think a window seat would be nice under the window, but I know you'll have a plan.I'll look forward to watching as you move on. Thankyou 🦘🦘🦘
Think you might have a glut of courgette if they all germinate😂. We planted 3 plants for the two of us and we couldn't eat them all and as everyone else had a glut we couldn't give them away. Take a look at the make do grow site, also based in Portugal. They have had mixed success germinating seeds in previous years and changed their approach this year with success.❤
My Suggestion for tomatoes, 1. Buffalo is a giant size, good for Burgers, 2. malzano bottle tomatoes, very tasty and 3. Cherry tomatoes for a quick snack, as a bushy one very easy to grow, does Not need much preparations. 👍🏼
Looks like the wood forms they (the former owners) used were not anchored well. Then when they filled with concrete and stones it buckled outward. I have seen that before in other old rock houses. Glad you are correcting it. Looks better now.😀
Great video. I really enjoyed watching you both make this a home. I especially enjoyed the fast motion of Victoria packing the dirt down on the slope. 😮😃 Thanks so much for making a nice long video.
Initially I thought some of the stones under the window were OK but after I saw your handy work, I have to say it looks so much better. Worth all the noise, sweat and back ache!! Bravo.
Thanks Anne 😅 We kept any stones we could but glad we made the call to demolish the rest and replace with lovely non-concrete covered ones!
@@LifebyLiving I'm a convert to your replacement idea, Ricky. The stones DO look much better.

Victoria, you did a great job compacting that soil over the rocks for the ramp. The next rain will tell whether or not the soil will stay in place. Very nice stone work under the window as well.

Greetings from Canada 🇨🇦. Perhaps a video of all of your bloopers (hence the hole comment) and others, could be a future episode in the making? 🤣😂. Love your videos and sense of humour!
The wall under the window. . . Incredible job. I understand underestimating!💜💜💜
Hi Victoria & Ricky! Great work on the stone! The garden is looking great also! Great subscriber numbers too!🙏🙏🙏Blessing’s
Thank you Laura! ❤
Algo tan fácil y práctico haber puesto la piedra encima de una manta vieja y arrastrarla!😂❤
Its so gratifying watching such a hard working couple making this a lovely homestead for both of you . Your enthusiasm, attitude, patience, creativity all come together for the best outcome in each of your projects. Keep up the good job. Feel better!
Thank you Elizabeth. You’re very kind 😊 Thank you for watching
😮 really? But those might be genetically modified…
I always buy heirloom seeds or plants then I take seeds from them
Really makes one respect the old builders of the original stone house, moving and fitting all the large stones, after watching you move the... one little rock.
Great job Ricky. Gonna look smart. Does already look soooo much better. V hope you feel better soon🤧😷🤒
I never thought I would see joy on the face of a woman when given a wheelbarrow !! LOL
“ a bit of a quiver in the back of my shorts” I need to remember that one!
Blessings to you both!!❤❤
You can actually take some seeds of the tomatoes you buy from the grocery store and plant it! It’s very easy and works well 🥰
Ah...my Sunday morning treat-watching your progress.
Thanks for making our video your Sunday morning treat! 😊
@@LifebyLiving Luv your kind remarks to us. U both are a treat. Your positive attitudes are so inspiring.
Who needs the gym when you have gigantic stones to lift 😆 you have worked hard both of you and it’s looking fantastic 🙌 ❤
Ricky trying haed not to respond to the hole question😅😅
Great work on house and garden by the way.
I promise there was no innuendo intended 😂
Another fabulous video with outstanding achievements. Pauline, Australia
Thank you Pauline 😊
Your home is looking absolutely gorgeous and with spring in the air it's heavenly. All your prunning showing wonderful results
Thank you Leslie! Spring is just the most wonderful time 🌸 🌱 😊
what a great job you have done on the window Ricky, I was panicking when you and Victoria were trying to lift that huge stone that you were both going to do your backs damage. be very careful guys, could you not hire a mini digger to move all the stones? great job Victoria on the path you have done a great job and made all the more easier with your new wheelbarrow, it's the little things in life that means a lot., I wish your video's were twice a week , it's such a long time waiting in anticipation for a whole week, I know I'm being selfish as you have got tons of work to do, but I just feel like a kid waiting for Christmas to arrive hahahaha. keep up the good work guys, be careful not to hurt yourselves and see you nxt week x
Have a great week. xx 💕🌷🇨🇦
Love your description! 😂 It was some seriously high-stakes Jenga! 😅
Oh yes, we also watch 'Make Do Grow', they're a great couple and we also recommend them. They're great at getting things done.
Love watching you two you are an inspiration to others😊
The work on the stone wall looks really nice! It was definitely worth it to make this effort and take this risk. I thought that all that rubble and dust from the wall would have been good to fill up the pathway that Victoria created? Anyway, great progress again on your projects! Looking good 😊💪🏻
You don’t need to go to the gym with all you do. Working and doing this on the side is hard work. That little house is going to be beautiful. ❤️🙏🏻❤️
Wonderful Video, Thank you, very enjoyable. Remember this, when it is to heavy, it’s to heavy!
😂 I definitely left Ricky with the heavier end to haul!
@@LifebyLiving LOL.
Your wheelbarrow wheel was having none of that massive stone 😂
Just when you think it’s surely going to break, it lives to barrow another day 🎉😂
6:14 those vertical columns of stone are called mullions.
Thanks for the tip Lee 😀 I’d always thought mullions only applied to those stones that sometimes separate the panes! Now I know 👍😀
Hej, jag har följt er under längre tid. Vilket toppenpar ni är.👍 Jag är också påväg att köpa ett stenlada i Portugal. Lycka till med ert fina hus
Looks really nice …and the ramp …your going to love that. Wow guys what a great week. ✨👍🏻✨
Write a children's story about that little bitty wheelbarrow 😊 and the giant stone.
The "rock dust" y'all took out from under the window would have worked great on the ramp for the wheelbarrow.
👍👍🏡🏡
Such a joy to watch, THANKS both of you, not forgetting the fur babies!. XOXOXOXO
Someone probably already said this, but all that rubble you but in the bags after your demo would be perfect for the misses garden ramp.
Beef tomatoes are fantastic. Loving your adventure. Nigel Plettenberg Bay South Africa
I know you said you don’t like fiction, but I just finished Cutting for Stone and enjoyed it tremendously. Might be appropriate title given your work ahead. 😂
Good job guys. And thanks for the extensive commentary - at least for me it makes is more interesting.
Good job. That new wheelbarrel is a necessary addition 👍
I really enjoyed the music in this video. The two of you are such hard workers. Can't wait to see the outside of the cottage completed ❤
Victoria, the garden is looking great! My favourite tomatoes are Arizona, Mikadо, De Barao, Marmande, Green Grape, Tim’s Black Ruffles, Blue Fire, Ivory Tears, Amethyst Jewel, Blue Fruit, Elberta Peach, Amur Tiger, Sweet Cream, Purple Fairy, Märchenengel, Desert Heart, Brandywine stripes, Gezahute Buhrer-Keel. Good luck!
If you like pumpkins take some of your composting material add to it on an empty piece of land and put some seeds in and let them go wild
Great job guys! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Good choice to start from scratch under the windows. You are doing a nice job, and it looks far better than what was there.!
It’s wonderful to watch you both working no quick fixing but both doing a proper professional job so worth it in the long run ❤️
Moving and Working with rocks is hard work!
Been watching you guys for a while now, and your videos just get better and better - keep up the good work - and over 80K subscribers - well deserved!
In addition to audio books you could check out podcasts. The confessionals and Sasquatch chronicles are 2 of my favorite. Great stone job 😊
I think you made the right decision as it looked more like concrete and small stones than the large ones to make a wall. Its looking really good, well done Ricky. Nice work on your slopped bank Victoria it not only looks much better but will be easier to use and be less precarious for you. Hope you are feeling better x
You don't need a gym after all that stone moving, that's for sure! lol
You two are certainly a pair of workers 😊I did think a window seat would be nice under the window, but I know you'll have a plan.I'll look forward to watching as you move on. Thankyou 🦘🦘🦘
Had to double take for a second as at first glance I read "workers" as something different!😂
