My goodness, though this drama is based on centuries past it still reflects how ruthless people become when vying for favor or riches. So sad that all the elegance shown, evil lurches at ever corner in that world. No wonder these women regret they didn't have a commer's life. Too late in realising that joy.
That wish to have been born as commoners is still so stupid and ignorant.
Actual commoners could face death at any time because of famines, floodings, earthquakes, droughts, wars, rebellions etc (all of which happened regularly in Imperial China), and we don't even have to talk about the daily struggle just to survive, the taxes, all the hard labor, the fact that they might be forced to sell themselves or their children into servitude (where do you think the upper-class got most of their servants?), and let's also not forget that the officials and nobles could trample on commoners anytime and however they wanted.
As for being normal nobility and marrying a normal nobleman, that's just the same as marrying the emperor but on a smaller scale; noblemen weren't inherently better people just because they had lower status than the emperor and they still had many concubines too because monogamy was never common back then; there would still be power struggles and scheming of all kinds, wives would still be abandoned/divorced, concubines would still be sold, children would still be killed and so on; oh, and you might find yourself losing all your wealth and property, being exiled, becoming a slave or being executed after your husband or some other close relative has commited/been accused of commiting a crime by some rival.
It was not that nice of a fate to become an imperial consort, but the other options for a woman of that era were definitely not much better.

This hailan had some unhealthy obsession with Ruyi.. Didn't care about the emperor or her son as much she cared about Ruyi... Ruyi tried to distant her many times from her though..
I always thought if there wasn't something else then, no matter how concealed and denied by Hailan. She referred to Yongqi as hers and Ruyi's son when he was born, and I don't think it was because of the rule of a high-born consort raising the child of a low-born concubine.
