  • I finally bit the bullet and bought a 600mm square from Banggood (this is not sponsored).
    I wanted a WoodPecker 600mm square, but I just don't feel I can spend £400.00 on a Square.
So here is my first impression of the Veiko 600mm Aluminium Square from Banggood.
Here's the link if you want one for yourself.

Bought thid gadget about 3 months back. I bought it on this very positive review. The square is a perfect right angle. I stood the square on top of my cast iron table saw and used an angle finder to measure the angle precisely. It was not 89.9°,it was spot on 90°. Couldn't be happier.

Just picked one up off your recommendation! Appears to be bang on right out of the box. Hopefully this allows me better squareness with my track saw. I also picked up the parallel guides as well.

I first learnt about Veiko tools from the Manor Wood channel. I put a toe in the water with a small ruler and small square. I put them against my large Woodpeckers square (which I’d don’t use for anything but a quick test piece) and they were looked good. I did the double flip over test and it was good (by which I mean any discrepancy was likely to be an issue with the angle at which I was holding my marking knife). Since then, I have bought maybe a dozen Veiko tools and none have disappointed me in any way. A few years later and they are still as accurate as ever.
So, why the discrepancy in price? Given that the price of aluminium is a global price - that’s not a factor; given that the pieces are made on a CNC and the cost of the labour element is therefore small - that’s not a factor. So, I don’t see that costs have much to do with it.
The major differences that I can see are:
    - % profit for Woodpeckers
    - % profit for the retailer
The retailer has to make a profit and I use the better UK retailers all the time. But Veiko seem to be able to make things work by having no retailer. My instinct about the Woodpecker marketing strategy is that they have decided to go for a defined market share achievable at extremely high cost; they could sell a lot more at a lesser price but that equation of more sales for less profit is what they have decided. Of course, the loser in this is the woodworker has have seen the marketing and pays an exorbitant amount to have that woodpecker brand.
The one downside of Veiko is that it’s made in China. I despise the Chinese government and all it stands for; it means repression; it means genocide; it means aggression. It’s wealth has been built on the backs of cheap labour although the cost of labour in China is rising. Whilst China has that wealth, it is busy buying influence in some countries; it is buying companies which own raw material supplies - totally similar to what the British did when it had an empire and what the USA does. However:
    - many of the brands that we think of as American or British or European are making some or all of their ranges in China anyway
    - are brands taking advantage of the fact that some don’t like buying from China to maintain high prices for their goods?

I agree but we have all accepted having our oil price determined by OPEC for decades without losing our hair over the human rights record of some of its members. I'm just saying.
I think you will find a lot of RUclipsrs toolwalls bedecked with free Woodpecker Product to help the illusion that they are somehow unique in their quality.

@@Dickie2702 I’m afraid that we all forget integrity when it suits us. Just look at how many items in our houses are made using cheap labour and/or made in dictatorships. My house would be a lot emptier If I were to throw away items made in those countries. That extends to items, such as cars, that might be made in Germany, Spain or wherever but components, even components of components are made in China.
So, I’m hypocritical. I write about despising them but I buy items from there. I either go without or pay absurd prices for something no better but costing a lot more. Currently, China is acting as the bank for the USA. The deficit of the USA is mind blowing and a lot is owed to China. Now, when you owe the bank a £100, you have a problem; when you owe the bank £3 trillion, the bank has a problem. I don’t see a happy ending between these two.

@@GTWoodshop Yes, some how from China they seem to have sorted the shipping and duty. In my experience from US or Canada items get stopped by Parcel Force for duty, collection charges and vat on all including services provided outside UK. They some time increase the cost dramatically.
This makes Incra, Jessem, Woodpecker and the like expensive in service cost.

Hi Allan, yes I have two, and one of which if the Festool. I feel they too are over priced, and don't give a large enough reference fence to cope with the leverage from the rail. Also the square overs more uses that just the rail square. 👍

Scratches on the surface ... I heard your wedding ring scrape along the surface as you wiped over it with your hand!! It looks like a serious piece of kit, but sadly a little expensive for a bit of aluminium in my view ... I'll may however purchase one of their 300mm squares.
Is there any problem in marking accurately due to the thickness of the square, i.e. would it have been easier if the markings had been carried over to the edge of the tool.
    Thanks for the review :)

    • @GTWoodshop
      @GTWoodshop  2 года назад +1

Hi Barry, yes there is, the Alu is to thick to be able to use accurately, if the markings had been continued around the side the tool would have been more useful. 👍
