A few years into my own backyard bowl-ish deal with pool coping, some homemade coping…and helping a lot on a large public/community DIY (and being fortunate to get help from park builders here and there)…I just wanted to give the MOST positive feedback to you guys. First of all- before I say these vids are targeted to people new to DIY stuff…can’t emphasize enough that the BEST OF THE BEST will ALWAYS be learning one way or another. Example, I got some ideas on repairs and using some finishing products above and beyond our Portland-heavy concrete mix. Didn’t use Ardex but replaced the broken joints between our coping with epoxy…and then sealed every crack I could find on our “slingshot” pocket. I used an already “wet” product for both. MOST important: I’m learning new ways to DESCRIBE the process to people wanting to learn. ie float with whatever wood you can find instead of needing expensive tools. Most of us who have been doing this for a couple years have bought proper tools…but I wish when I started I would have been introduced to these concepts. Also the way he describes the order of finish is right on the money! Thanks y’all doing a good public service
Seriously - this guy is on point. Imagine the stuff he passes on to his kids too.. this is work ethic. this is getting stuff done. life skills. skateboarding is full of trying and failures, with a few little successes, and I reckon this guy is all about that.. putting in the hard yards.
No replies yet to the question about what specific Ardex product is recommended? Also Ardex might not be available worldwide so even some basic explanation of what it is would help. Very helpful to know to stop using Bondo but would help to know more what to use instead thanks!
Most important step is to clean and prep the surface of what your are applying the concrete to. Give it a good power wash to get the grime off. Add some bonding agent and some tapcons to the existing concrete to get it to bond together.
Wish yall wld have went into more detail about the Ardex and what kind to use! I used to use the orange label thinset to patch my ramp but wish I wld have known about the twp! I have also used some mapei stuff but never know what's best!
Finally someone saying stop using bondo! Quickrete can even be skateable within an hr and easily smoothed to a better finish then bondo and last way longer
This is awesome! Question…I am trying to connect two parking blocks at my local shop to make one long slappy ledge. I’ve connected them with bondo, but they broke apart pretty quick. The main issue is that the ends of the block aren’t vertical, they’re angled slightly. So there ends up being this big gap that has to be filled. Any recommendations from other DIY folks out there? Thx!
Bond the two parking blocks together with anchoring epoxy. (comes in a caulk tube) you can find it a your local lumber yard or big box store. You can also use it to fill the void between the two blocks and it grinds and sands down super smooth.
I did this with cement mix. Duct taped the sides and filled in the gaps, then smoothed the top and angled sides. It chunked out a tiny bit but still grinded thru perfect until the landlord came n tore it out. I had four of them connected. I also added concrete adhesive to the cement mix and painted it on the sides of the ends of the blocks before pouring the cement in. Make sure before anything that you use construction adhesive and maybe even mortar/cement to set the blocks in place!
1:05 "you don't want one of your homies sitting on the side getting wasted" No you want ALL the homies getting wasted together and working together to build a rad spot... so y'all can keep coming back to skate and get wasted together 💜
could i use that ardex stuff on an old curb that is beyond rub bricking? i want to make an existing curb grindable and i think its like 100 yr old concrete. i already went through a rub brick and there is rocks on the surface that arent scraping off. what do you suggest for this? its not my property or a skatepark so i cant demo and start over. also i cant find anything about fixing a skatepark thats got rough
My local parks pipes are messed up from the heat and cold(midwest living) and it's making me want to build some spots in my backyard and stay private in my backyard instead of dealing with scooter kids
There needs to be an Austin builds spots reoccurring segment from Thrasher. Make this happen
yeah i would watch as many of these as thrasher is willing to put out, this is sick
Agreed
There used to be a badass spot off manor rd called the alien pod i believe they tore it down though

AUSTIN rules!! Get out there, and do your thing. Love it.
Love anything DIY! Make this into a series. Keep the heat coming!👊🔥🤘
That "old" deck looks like a new one 🥲
Add concrete adhesive with a brush or a rag to the original surface for a better bond really helps with the thinner coats of ardex bonding too.
Bout how long would it take for this size of quarter to dry ya think?
