@@bryanmoreorless3314 we had a Chuck E Cheese and a Hometown Buffet right next to each other in Santa Clarita Valley. Currently the Hometown Buffet is vacant and the Chuck E Cheese is currently a Dollar Tree.
Went to hometown buffet as a kid for special occasions, I would always make a beeline for the lava cake and vanilla ice cream. When I found out my local restaurant closed I was devastated. Still am.
They used to have a bumblebee mascot who would hand out balloons. And you could get unlimited choccy milk like a fountain drink. I grew up going to Hometown and Furr's before Golden Corral was really a thing. Sad to see both of those brands completely disappear.
I would come to my local hometown buffet when growing up. So years and years ago, whenever I’m done eating fried chicken, chicken soup, and pizza, I would immediately go to the dessert section and grab bunch of chocolate chip cookies and get the milk as well. The cookies were the best! But sadly as years passed by, it became small and thick and I barely ate it. I’ll never forget the buffet I went to.
After 10 years I went one day and the 2nd week it was gone. A part of my childhood is gone forever and I'm actually really sad about it. I hope they bring it back one day.
My family has been loyal customers for decades, please come back!!!, I'd give an arm or a leg just to get one mouth watering dine in for one last time, and then I would gladly say, "totally worth the cost"
I miss Old Country Buffet. I loved everything about the experience from my first visit up until my last visit. Later on in life, I would go there for lunch by myself. Then I recall going one day to get a meal and I saw the front door covered with a huge sign saying they were closed for good. I was so disappointed. Now that we're in the middle of a pandemic, it's highly unlikely we will ever see these types of stores for a good long while......so sad.
Growing up in the 90's and throughout the 2000's and 2010's, Hometown Buffet was the only place that I knew where you could eat as much as you wanted. I even went to Hometown Buffet for the high school graduation dinner. I remember when the bumblebee mascot used to walk around and give out balloons. There was a Hometown Buffet in Buena Park CA, that turned into a Chinese Buffer in 2017. Hometown Buffet in Anaheim was the last one I visited during 2018, before they turned it into a Golden Corral. We should be out there fighting against Food Management Partners to bring back Hometown Buffet, so that future generations can have the experience that their parents and grandparents once had.
Hometown Buffet peaked in the 1990s to early 2000s when most Americans were middle-class, gave more birth with kids, and wages were a lot lower back then. Today, the middle-class population is shrinking or getting poorer due to inflation, birth rate is declining, so more buffets have closed down rapidly now. Buffets were the past with no more future ahead.
My mother and I went to the Old Country Buffet (later named Hometown Buffet) in a nearby city a number of times per year. They did so much business on Sundays that the line stretched outside. Their buffet was excellent. But this one closed so suddenly that the employees were not notified and reported to work to find the doors locked. We then visited a Fire Mountain (later Ryan's) for a while, but it too closed without warning. There was a Ryan's in another city we went to a couple of times, but it too closed a few years ago. Find memories, but corporate treated their employees terribly with the closings without notice.
It was sad to see hometown buffet go but I loved it when I was growing up such great memories one thing I did is get a cup of vanilla ice cream and put coca-cola and drink it with my favorite uncle but he is longer with us sadly :(
I randomly thought about HomeTown buffet n YTubed it. I had no idea it was a San Diego thing. I live in Texas now but growing up in San Diego/Clairemont area... it was our go to spot. A was a good bang for your buck for a single mother. Birthdays, after church, etc. This was the place.
Does anyone else remember the ice cream they had? I remember they had a vanilla ice cream and I think what was an orange or tangerine flavoe which I loved together.
I remember going to Hometown buffet in San Antonio even though i lived in New Braunfels as a kid with my parents and sister. My mom would play Selenas latest albums on cassette from 1993 to 1995 going to San Antonio on the weekends to get my hair and Dad haircuts, Windsor park mall and then last Hometown buffet. We visited Hometown buffet from 1994 -2004 when the restaurant closed on Austin Highway, we went to the restaurant after Church at Cornerstone with John Hagee. Those were great times of my childhood.
Man I remember driving 20 mins to Visalia California as a kid so many time to home town buffet. Many family memories here. And they had them as a different name in Kansas City we would go to when visiting my grandparents
You should do a video on Duff's Famous Smorgasbords. They kind of pre-dated Old Country Buffet and Golden Corral. At their peak they had, I believe, over 200 locations, but they were famous for their "rotary buffet". The main buffet was big and circular and rotated very slowly. About a quarter of the circle was in the kitchen. You'd stand along the line and the assortment of food would slowly go past you, and as it rotated into the kitchen area staff could re-stock and wipe down the buffet. It was really interesting in its time. If you were too slow you'd find yourself holding a serving spoon and the item had moved on and was now in front of other patrons.
One other reason why Old Country Buffet was dying was because they couldn't adapt with the times and compete with newer buffet houses like Golden Corral which arguably had better food and offerings.

Its too bad that these are gone. But when I used to go, I just kept thinking how people can be pigs when it is all you can eat. And wasteful. They would stack a plate sky high...and if it got cold, they would throw it away and get fresh stuff instead of taking smaller portions ang going back. The same thing happened at PONDEROSA. I swear that all you could eat for some people meant 3 plates of chicken wings, and no fillers!
My mother always got grossed out at all-you-can-eat restaurants. She said watching all the big, big people eating plate after plate piled up with food made her lose her appetite. I always got a kick out of it - made me feel skinny by comparison.
