Falcons and commodores died because there wasn’t a large market for Sedans as they used to be.
Plus They were comparatively expensive and not as reliable as Japanese counterparts. However the Holden commodore probably has a lot more going for it than Ford falcons did.
So the problem was primarily sedan sales decreasing. Same thing occurred for Toyota Camry & aurion, Honda accord, Nissan maxima/Altima etc.
However, there was a market for their performance vehicles though. Only if they could manufacture them for under 60 - 70K whilst still being somewhat practical.

People want big cars. Hard to change human behaviour. I agree its ironic. But you look at how cities are losing green spaces in the suburbs. You have huge mcmansions being built with rooms for virtually every activity, despite smaller families. All the blocks are being built on with paving in yards and verges and all trees removed. Then you have 3 places per block to stop sprawl, but it means no green areas or trees anywhere as they maximise housing in suburbs.

Semis and concrete mixers don't fit in car park spaces. Therefore they don't park there. We don't increase the size of the parking space for them.
These things are TRUCKS. They are not CARS. I don't see why the CAR parks should be increased in size, thus increasing the cost of development for everyone, just so that someone who chooses a truck can park it in their apartment building or local shopping centre. Parking anything with a size greater than a standard parking space, less a designated buffer all around (eg 60cm on each side and 20cm on each end, including towballs) for clearance (and door opening), should be illegal to park in car spaces and fines should be imposed. Partially blocking traffic lanes, or taking 2 spaces, is illegal and needs to be enforced.

As more of them appear, drivers of smaller and lower-riding cars feel less safe, and more inclined to buy a bigger, higher-riding car for their next purchase, despite those cars having a worse safety record for their occupants. A few years ago, they took out a half-page ad in the local paper showing a Ram parked in a parking space outside the showroom and the caption read "They will fit in a standard parking space". The Ram was around 6" inside the lines on both sides so yes, it fitted in but if there was another one in the next space (and as the dealer in the business of selling them, they want one in EVERY parking space), how would you open the doors? Also, why would you reward a company (Ford, Chevy, Dodge) that doesn't make a vehicle for your market by buying something from them that must have an additional $50,000 spent on it when it arrives here?

For purchasing there should be a levy on utes and SUVs with a small business tax claim available for demonstrated commercial use. And taxes like stamp duties and luxury car taxes should be indexed to vehicle size.
Commercial vehicles and large SUVs should probably require a special class of drivers licence too. Something to account for the higher risk associated with their use.
Electric vehicle rebates should extend to ebikes.
And of course we need to incentivise public and active transport. Ambitious, paradigm shifting projects, that aren’t just functional but enticing enough to drag people from the car-by-default mindset. For example the Connecting SEQ 2031 vision published in 2011 proposed a Brisbane Subway, which has been quietly shelved in the intervening 13 years. But Brisbane should be using the Olympics as motivation to reinvigorate that idea. Not just a single line but one line as the first of a 4 or 5 line network. A genuine high quality MRT is what we need to break the car mindset in the first place. Sadly both parties that can form state government here are either unambitious or actively hostile to increasing public transit spending.

Take the Denni ute muster as a point of reference, 15 years ago it was mostly two door utes. Now it's all crew cab trucks. Tradies like the crew cab because it can do both work and family duty, there's no denying their logic. The trays are smaller, but having extra seats is useful. Youll find most crew cab utes however are full of tools and equipment in the back seat, not children, why you ask? Better resale value, more people will want to buy a crew cab, so people also buy them just for resale purposes. Its kinda like a bath in a house, you rarely use it, but it's "good to have". Same logic
The American ute fixes both these issues, they tray is huge, cabin is luxurious, and they can tow huge loads. I think if most tradies are honest though, they would rarely use the full capacity of the truck and for about half the cost get a "real" Hino truck which has far better utility, but doesn't have the "cool factor", so guess what they choose ;-)
For reference, i drive a 2023 Japanese Hijet, a tiny k-truck, so i dont really have a horse in this race, but most my mates are triadies so im fairly up to date with the logic behind these trucks.
If the American trucks were cheaper, I guarantee they would outsell every other "ute". Tradies wouldn't give a rats about other road users, neither did all the suburban SUV drivers when they had a chance to buy a smaller car, neither did the Land Rover Discovery drivers in Kew for just dropping off their kids.
    It's all the same logic

The size of them alone is bad. Not to mention that these cars are classified as ‘light trucks,’ meaning they're not subject to the same fuel and safety standards. I would have to check what they are now, but I was really shocked when I found out a dual cab ute gets 'commercial tolls' & a tradie van, Hiace, VW transporter type size, gets car classification!.... If it was weight issue as suggested to me at the time when I spoke with someone from the toll operator ......A Range Rover gets 'car '& a Hilux ute gets 'commercial rates'. I am guessing the Rangie is much heavier than the Hilux.... I have always thought this classification was very specific & in the same commercial 'tone' as the airport wants to protects its car parking, over the train. unfair especially for the tradie who gets a dual cab so he can safely use it to carry the kids, I just couldn't see the justification.... I work in a delivery van, and I have seen more and more average residential area roads reduced to one way traffic only, simply because the space on the road is reduced to a single lane width by over-sized SUVs parked on both sides. Cars travelling one way have to stop completely to allow the cars coming from the other direction to pass.
If nothing changes, I predict the eventual total gridlock of cities, from major arterial roads right down to small residential streets, and eventually the total breakdown of our cities' ability to economically function.
If our roads were our arteries, SUVs would be the plaque.

And this one, I think we need to implement would dramatically take a lot of arrogant drivers off the roads, would be mandating a driving test each time a person's license expires, maximum of 5 years held. This way, people who think they know everything can be put in their place, make them more conscientious when it comes to driving.

Yes this is another example of the insidious creeping influence of the US over the rest of the world. They have very low fuel taxes, which encourages larger and hungry vehicles which the Chinese & Japanese build to suit that big market and we then all get the same pointless monsters. Increasing fuel taxes in the US would discourage these kinds of vehicles and would fund the urgent investment in their woefully decrepit infrastructure.

    • @rodh1404
      @rodh1404 8 месяцев назад +1

The push towards "light trucks" actually came from a regulation from the US government to have more fuel efficient vehicles on the road. In 1975, the US government mandated that all new vehicles sold after 1985 would have to be about twice as fuel efficient as they were at the time. That fuel efficiency requirement has only increased since then. BUT, there was one huge exception put in place to assist farmers and small businesses - light trucks were not included in the regulations. So instead of focusing on selling smaller, more fuel efficient vehicles, the big manufacturers changed over to selling more light trucks (which includes SUVs). Australia enacted similar legislation, with a similar exception, and shockingly enough we're seeing similar results.

the other thing i think is stupid is rego priced being based on how many cylinders your car has cause again we'll use my 1992 holden rodeo for this it has the 4ze1 engine which is a 4 cylinder yet the v6 engine which makes the same power costs more to rego. A brand new 3 cylinder turbocharged yaris makes the same power as an old v8 commodore yet the commodore has to pay $1000 as the yaris is only $400, yet both cars are 5 seaters and therefore can substitute for each other

I feel this is a very subjective review of these vehicles and is quite biased in the critique. For context I have a small/medium vehicle and don't have any need for one of these cars but it doesn't in any way make them illegal or that we should attack people who want one. Some points I have with your arguments.
    1. You compare a Holden ute as "the kinds of utes we are used to seeing on Australian roads" - This may have been correct 10 years ago but definitely not so now. It is far more reasonable to compare them to a Hilux or Ranger sized vehicle and your comparison in size increase would be greatly diminished.
    2. Under why you claim its a tax break for cars that carry more than 1 ton of cargo. The problem here is the vast majority of these vehicles (150/1500 series) only carry around 750-800kg which includes vehicle occupants. Also if you look at weight, EVs usually also weigh a lot and the current car of the year, Kia EV9, weighs more than these large American Trucks. You also fail to mention the very large tax incentives to buy an EV over these vehicles which should be disclosed to demonstrate what the government is doing to try to encourage purchases in other areas.
You also say small cars are increasingly hard to get but fail to mention that the Hyundia i30 and Toyota Corolla remain very popular cars in volume of sales and definitely not hard to buy.
I feel under the why component you should also address the difference in the Australian market vs most world markets as a whole being the much larger distances most Australian's have to travel and the lack of public transport infrastructure in many areas. The situation here is definitely a unique one and Australian's often pick vehicles with this in mind.
    3. Under safety issues you site that people not in these vehicles are at increased risk of injury but then claim that people in larger cars feel safer (which you just gave evidence is true). Further you claim that statical evidence varies but one point of evidence they are more dangerous is from a 2003 report in the US. A 21 year old report from a different car market isn't good evidence to support this argument and if you do with to remain unbiased, you should also provide some of the alternative arguments you claim exist. Honestly this part feels like you have an opinion and are just searching for evidence that may support it even if it isn't the best.
    4. Parking fees - I appreciate you opinion, I'm not sure that just increasing fees is the right way. I would suggest that any where the nose or rear to kerb has to fit inside a measured line. If they stick out they can't park there or they will be fined.
    5. You do state some people do have good use for these vehicles but don't really address they fact they do have a genuine case for usage. Covid statistically saw an enormous increase in caravan ownership and the need to tow. These American vehicles do this far better than any previously available SUVs or utes on the market which all cap at 3500kg. The US vehicles are rated at 4500kg and their wheelbase genuinely makes towing a 3T van or boat much, much safer for all. They also provide a much more comfortable way for a family to travel long distances.
Sorry if this seems a lot but I felt your arguments on this video felt very one-sided and lacked good evidence. I know many people in the city would understandably prefer not to see them on cramped roads but I think we should also discuss things as often as possible without bias and based on evidence. We should also consider that we're somewhat a free country and if people want to purchase something for enjoyment, we shouldn't call to make it illegal or ban without good reason. Every rule and law we make impacts someone's right to choose so if we make them lets make sure its for the best purpose.
I've really been enjoying your videos on public transport so thanks so much for them and I'm looking forward to more in future!

I would like to see some incentives for small cars, registration would be a good place to start. Registering and insuring my mazda 2 isn't so much less than my 4WD ute, which is a work vehicle. I drive the ute as little as possible as I consider it to be a dangerous vehicle. When I got it (2010 model) I thought it was big, but even it seems small compared to the current models. Why we follow American trends I really do not understand - they have a vehicle industry to prop up. We just have stupidity.

So many people just don’t get it.
The push to tow legally within the weight limits necessitate such vehicles.
Plus it is wrong to claim people buy yank tanks to benefit by having a1 ton payload as most “1500” yank tanks are less than 1 ton capacity.
Are you going to ban delivery trucks & vans also (they are just as big).
Also if you travel long distance with adult passengers in comfort these vehicles are the perfect answer.
I will hang on to my large cars with the same vigour as my rifle and my belief we should have free speech and the right to drive a safe & legal vehicle.

I had to fold back the mirrors on both large pick up trucks to squeeze my large delivery truck through the gap. Literally a few centimetres gap. A few weeks ago in inner south eastern Melbourne. I have had times where I have had to back the truck up someone's driveway to turn back because some drivers can't park close to the curb.

I personally don't like them because I drive on lots of bush tracks and they are just to wide for that. But I think if someone likes such big utes they should be

Bring back the station wagon! Such a fantastic and practical family car. My family has a commodore wagon and the back seat is like sitting on a couch. New SUVs are taller and are inherently less safe than wagons. The boot size is so good aswell. Wish Australia still made our own cars😢

The other day we went to the Gold Coast and ventured into Surfers Paradise hoping to get some lunch. If you want to see plastic people driving the latest "have to be seen in this" then that's the place to go. Ram pick up's by the dozen crawling along the esplanade, not going anywhere but checking to see who is looking at them. To this day I have never seen one used in a commercial application, they are pose value only and stuff up parking bays that aren't meant for such a huge tank. Lunch? We gave up and went to the Yatala pie shop. Well at least you could park and there were none of those Ram/Chev/Ford tanks there........probably not trendy enough there and not enough people to see them.

It’s all well and good if you live in the city or near the city and don’t ever venture out away from there, but as someone that lives in the suburbs and heads out often to the country and the outback, a smaller SUV, let alone a small sedan or hatchback simply is not an option. As for your theory about buyers of large utes and American pickup trucks buying them only for the tax break, the purchase price is still in excess of one hundred grand, twice as much as a small to medium sized sedan, so that really is a mute argument. Also, your “emotional support vehicle” comment may be a lot more accurate than you think, my stress levels are much higher when I’m in or close to the cities, and reduce significantly when I venture out to the country or the outback, which would not be able to to with a vehicle you suggest I need.
    Just my thoughts.

the american pick-up truck was originally a niche work vehicle for farmers, in short, if you dont own or live in rural australia (i.e., you live in Bondi) you should be paying 10x for registration of that vehicle
then when those people buy random farms for this work around, you then make laws that force them to prove they are using their farm vehicle for farming purposes (i.e., you have your ABN/ACN tied to your vehicle, and that business is registered to your primary production licence)
then you can force them to stay out of the cities by *NOT* changing infrastructure to suit them, look at american mid-west major cities (Michigan, Ohio, etc) and how awful their urban sprawl is combined with the ridiculous over-consumption of vehicles that do not meet their needs at all
that being said, i have a farm, and a hilux, and this would benefit me greatly lol, but ive seen more of those vehicles and its horrible.
you mentioned safety, large SUV's are the leading cause of deaths of infants (under-7) and its mostly mom or dad reversing over their children (even with those reverse cameras they arent going to stop every case).
tl;dr - nothing will be done, the australian government is too focused on maximising housing prices and rental prices because all the politicans have 3+ investment properties and they need /all/ the money

Just outright ban them for domestic users or tax the hell out of them. Also base the domestic rego costs on vehicles on size & weight. Anything over say a Honda Jazz sized vehicle really is not needed by most people. Ford F150s and Dodge Rams are reat_rd material.

My opinion is simple...... Let people drive what they want, if it's a yank tank or a little car let them drive what ever they want without getting the government involved.

Also don't increase car park size to accommodate those larger cars.

"Let people drive what they want, if it's a yank tank or a little car let them drive what ever they want" - absolutely, just so long as they pay the full cost of the harm and risk they inflict on others if they choose an oversized underhandling truck. Its an argument for taxing the bejesus out of these monsters.
