Snowdonia Marathon Eryri - The Hardest UK Road Marathon?

- Back for it's 40th year, Snowdonia Marathon Eryri is a very special marathon. Organised by the Llanberris community for the community, it could well claim to be the toughest UK road marathon (though others such as the Langdale Marathon would also lay such a claim).
The route starts by taking you up from Lllanberris and over Pen-y-Pass before dropping down and round the other side of Snowdon through the villages of Beddgelert (which marks the half way point and the start of the middle climb), Rhyd Ddu, Betws Garmon and Waunfawr.
At Waunfawr, the true challenge of this marathon is revealed, as you take a right turn the road kicks UP and on weary legs you have a 270 metre climb before you descend on a steep, rough track back into Llanberris. Your legs battered, your toes squashed, you then do the glory run along the High Street to the finish.
Just before you descend, however, is one of the marathon's highlights, the feed station at the top of the last climb is party time, this year it was pirate themed and they serve far more than just water and energy drinks. I supped a hot cuppa and enjoyed a chocolate brownie to fuel my last two miles 😄
At the finish you're presented, not with a medal, but a slate coaster, this is my fourth (I'm building a nice set) and it was in Gold to celebrate their 40th year.
A fabulous marathon, made so special by the landscape, the community support, the terrain and the many wonderful runners you meet and chat to along the way, including, this year, a rhino!
If you like running, this has to be on your "Must Do" list. I will be back again for my fifth coaster next year!

Thank you for doing this, your enthusiasm is catching. Can't believe that you didn't give up with the narration when the going got tough. I'm almost tempted...
Let yourself be tempted, you’ll have a blast 😀
This was such fun to watch. Thankyou. The scenery was glorious and I loved your positivity throughout the course. Well done on completing let alone a fab time. All marathons should serve tea on the course 😂 loved that.
Yes, I think tea stations on all marathons should be a UKA requirement for a race to be registered 😀 thanks for your kind words.
Great video - thank you. Heading up there this weekend to get my 4th coaster too, but lack of fitness might mean I'm taking in the scenery too 😂
It’s a marathon to savour 😀
Amazing view , your music is so motivational, I really want to try
Great video! You've really captured the spirit of this awesome marathon!
Couldn't do this year but keeping my fingers crossed I get to add to my 4 coasters next year! Oh and well done! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks, hope you make it next year to build up that coaster collection!
Looks epic, Def on my list to do.
Thanks for sharing this video, and well done for your achievement. I’d not heard of this marathon before and one to sign up for in the future. Well done.
Thanks. Yes definitely one to sign up for, though be warned once you’ve done it you’ll want to do it again 😀
Well done! I really enjoyed that journey - slightly easier watching it that actually doing it. 🎯
But if you don’t do it you don’t change to taste just sweet that cuppa is at mile 24 😀☕️
I hope you are running this marathon this weekend. I really enjoyed this video. This weekend will be my 2nd Eryri marathon
I am indeed, it will be my 5th. Come and say hi if you see me. Have a great run.
@@ALittleAdventureTime I'll say hi if I see you. Are you going to record it again?
@@davebrown567 yes I will be filming again, my aim to make it a bit different is to try and speak to other runners as I go round and record short interviews 😀
@@ALittleAdventureTime Very best of luck. Have a great time
Great video. Made me homesick….I used to ride most of that route on my bike about 60 years ago when I lived in Caernarfon. I’m too old to run those distances now…but we’ll done and thanks a lot from up a Spanish mountain 👍🍷
Glad you liked it, it would be fab cycling there as well, will have to take my bike over next time and maybe ride the route the following day 😀 some fantastic cycling in Spain too!
I'll have to come out of retirement to run that one. You've sold it to me.
If you want the hardest UK marathon, give Beachy Head a go!
I ran it 10 years on the trot. I couldn't recommend it more!
I’ve had Beachy head recommended to me several times. The challenge would be its normally the Sunday after Snowdonia on the Saturday, that could be one tough weekend!
@@ALittleAdventureTime Last year it was the week before, so certainly worth a look. One that's definitely worth a go.
Wasn't the weather/conditions just perfect! Pretty much a rain storm before and cleared up for the big event.... Wow! In its wake it just left such beautiful water falls and mountain dew. Well Done 👍🏼
Yes, it ended up being a perfect day for it, had a fabulous run.
OMG amazing well done
Thanks, looking forward to running it for my 6th time this year, love this marathon.
Brilliant, it was better than the channel 4 coverage, a great reminder of one of my favourite marathons, my legs are trashed though now!!!
Yes it's brutal on the legs! Glad you enjoyed the film 😄
Im doing my first ever marathon in October and its the Eryri one…. Looking forward 👍
That's certainly a toughy for your first but also one of the best, enjoy every moment!
Ian well done, AND to Iona for her 100th Park Run @ BW. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Chris 👍
Hi Ian, another great video (the best!) and not such a ‘Little Adventure’. I forgot you were a runner as well. I only ever did 2 Marathons - Coventry & London (which I trained for), don’t think I would even have considered doing the Snowdon one. Surprised at the big variation in surfaces, makes it very difficult to know what footwear is best.
Thanks 😀 yes it’s always a bit of a gamble, most of it is easily runnable in road shoes but the last couple of miles are certainly much better for trail shoes!
@@ALittleAdventureTimeWalking uphill ... I did the South Downs Way Trail Run once (Petersfield to Eastbourne), a couple of more experienced participants suggested the best way to conserve energy (and recover) was to walk uphill, jog on the flat and run downhill. Nothing anywhere near as steep as your Snowdon run, but it seemed to work out fairly well. (No special ‘Sports Drinks’ in those days, we used Complan 😊).
@@kevinrourke6269 yes “ultra rules” as I call them, hills are for walking up 😀
This looks fantastic. I'd love to give it a go next year, take on those hills.
So is it in October?
Well done for completing it, anyway. 👍🏃
Yes normally the last Saturday in October or thereabouts. It’s a fab event, it’s oversubscribed so they now operate a ballot which opens on 1st Dec but also you can exchange places so often can get places from those who’ve had to drop out nearer the date.
Enjoyed this video. Doing this on practically zero training 😮😂
I'm going for a repeat of doing it on very little focussed raining again this year (longest run of 11miles in last month or so) but to add to the challenge I'm doing Coventry half marathon the following day 😂 to raise funds for Luca Foundation for Cuddle Cots www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ian-o-donnell-mbe
See you there 😊
Come and say Hi if you spot me wandering around with my camera@@tritaffy
Definitely will do 🙏
I'm doing this race later this month. Lovely to get a glimpse of the actual course. Do many people not make the 18 mile cut off? Thats the bit im most worried about
I've had friends who've power walked the whole thing and finished ok, I think they are fairly relaxed about the cut off and it just might mean road closures etc. are no longer in place but they won't stop you running and you would still get to finish but just mean you do it at "own risk" from what I've heard.
You'll love the event, I'm doing it again this year to get my 5th coaster!
@@ALittleAdventureTime Thank you so much for replying! That gives me real piece of mind. I'm looking forward to it!
@@laurabartlett6269 if you spot me waving a camera around do say hi!
@@ALittleAdventureTime I will! You just might be a bit ahead of me!
As you were unprepared what time did you complete this in?
I managed it in 4:54 so just managed to sneak in under 5hrs 😀
Running Channel presenter @3:51 ❤
What sort of time does the wining man do this marathon in?
The winning man did it in 2:39:52 which is quite incredible when you consider the terrain!
@@ALittleAdventureTime That`s very impressive, was expecting you to say something like 4 hours, its on my radar for next year
@@Karlm01 my PB is 4:01 there, I ran a 3:40 on a flat marathon a few weeks later so that gives you an idea of how challenging it is comparatively. Definitely do it, it’s a great event.
The record is 2 hours 33 min
Did this race in 2011 finished in 4 hours 13 min did it again in 2012 guess what finished in 4 hours 13 min again don't know if anyone has done that before
Loved that there were gallons of tea available in the aid stations 😊 🫖
Can’t beat a hot sweat cuppa on a marathon & for recovery 😀
