It is, and what's worse, none if their fans stood up for them in any way either. That's why it doesn't pay to have followers. People are so self-absorbed these days that they'll worship you when you're around and move on to the next immediately after you're gone.

As someone who suffers with chronic pain. I’m going to give them the benefit of the doubt. I believe that Prince got his meds through a Dr. (The streets are always a huge gamble).
I took fentanyl for years without becoming addicted or abusing it. It’s effective pain management. I never felt high, I never chased a high.
Consider the possibility that these men, after years of wear and tear on their bodies were in chronic pain. They also lived to perform. And people who depended on them performing for their own living. Rock stars support a lot of people. Maybe it was a combination of pressure and bad judgment? Perhaps one or both of them decided to just double-dose to get through? It happens. People do it occasionally and get away with it. Not everyone who takes pain medicine is chasing a high. Some are just trying to manage pain and do the things they need or love to do.

I'm so happy Joe clearifies why Prince & Petty passed. There's always that one person that says something brainless like "well they were rockstars, doing rockstar things" NO. These men were in extreme physical pain. Prince was an incredible acrobatic dancer, he could jump off a 20 foot speaker and land in a full split & get up doing a one legged spin & that eventually started to plague him. Prince in the late 90's had to get hip replacement which is an insanely painful surgery & that's when he started taking pain killers. This wasn't a man who got high and smashed fans doing cocaine blasting rock music. There are a lot of people in the world suffering from chronic pain, it's not easy. It's incredible how confidently Prince handled it, he still continued performing. My favorite artist of all time. 🤗

Yeah, Iearned Prince was taking fentanyl due to chronic pain and I felt bad for him. When your in a lot of pain you'll take anything to make it stop. Had a shoulder injury once and all I had was simple over the counter analgesia, which didn't do much. I knew if I could get my hands on some morphine I'd have taken it in a heart beat. (Shoulder's all good now) RIP Prince and thanks for the music.

Bro, one of my buddy's dad from college worked with Tom Petty and was gonna hook me up with badass tickets on his next tour.
Not only that, I'm a huge Black Sabbath fan and didn't realize they were playing in LA (where I lived at the time) until the day of, so I missed my chance that tour. Sadly, it has been their last and given Dio is dead and Ozzy has Parkinsons, I imagine it will remain their last.
That said, I'm just grateful we have the internet so I can watch their concerts whenever.
Also, maybe it's best I never went (kind of like a don’t meet your heros thing) considering there's no way it could recreate their early concerts back in the 70s.

I’m 53 years old. I’ve been smoking grass for most of my life and it’s never held me back from accomplishing anything I wanted to do. I’ve never tried coke because I watched it get a death grip on some of my friends and it dragged them under for life. Only a few managed to escape and it wasn’t easy for them. I have found that the key to enjoying, weed, whiskey and mushrooms is moderation. Let it be a hobby not an occupation.

    • @ChristianC-gy1ym

I was an ordinary high school kid, went to college and did everything they told me to do.
I dropped out of college after my sophomore year because I had zero motivation.
Started experimenting, never liked weed much. But I took to drinking so I did that. Made some friends in and out of college.
Then a guy came along, someone I went to high school with but we weren't friends back then. Only just knew each other by association.
Him and I connected, seeing as how we were both losers. I was a dropout, he never went to college in the first place. He was a naturally smart guy. We had some deep conversations about life, about religion, fringe stuff. Turns out, he was into smoking crystal meth. He was reluctant to let me try it, but he relented. My first experience with meth came with ample precautions -- he told me how dangerous and addictive it was. And boy was he spot on. The high hit me instantaneously. And we would smoke it up all night. Him, and another friend, and I. The 3 of us, we kept it secret from other friends because we didn't want them judging us for it.
To this day, I honestly do not know how I got out of that life. I just naturally drifted away. And miraculously, I never went through the withdrawal period. I just stopped.
Fast forward, I got my life together. Went back to college to complete my pre-requisites for pharmacy school. It's been 10 years now since I graduated and became a pharmacist. Happily married with a beautiful 4 year old son. I restored my relationship with my parents. I couldn't be happier.
I thank God all the time, as I truly believe it was God who got me out of there.
The meth friend, last I heard he's been checking in and out of rehab and therapy.

Tom performed at his last concert with a broken hip...he had painful hip issues for a while but didn't know it was broken (and that he had emphysema as was revealed by his doctor) until his tour began.

WOW! I am shocked at these revelations. Not only does Joe have AMAZING and EXTENSIVE insight into their deaths, Rob jumps right in there and breaks it all down. No need to consult another expert.
ALSO, Rob is not a "recreational", or "light" cocaine user.
So all in all this is a great fucking clip! Way to go! How does it feel to make such great content from others' content?

So many musicians do not have "regular" health care. I think the lifestyle and fame makes seeing doctors regularly a bit of an inconvenience - for lack of a better term. Tom and Prince would both still be alive had they been entrusted to REAL regular physicians - not "doctors to the stars." They didn't have to die that way. Everyone has to realize that we're all the same when it comes to health and the care required.

Iggy Pop has said performers need to learn how to say no, and bag off tours they think are too much for them. Iggy has said he's had to reschedule sometimes when he thinks the grim reaper will find him. Touring isn't just exhausting, there are giant financial implications involved and not for the star even as much as the crew who all live off of working for the star. Rough ass business, in all ways. Sometimes I think all performers should just perform in maybe 5 places around the nation that set up residencies like Vegas. Those are WAY EASIER ON THE STARS!
