- A Day in the Life of a Black Family of 5 Living in Mérida, Mexico: Homeschooling, Family Maintenance, and Thriving with Special Needs
In October 2024, our Black family of 5 made the life-changing decision to leave Houston, Texas, and embark on a journey to Mérida, Mexico. This vibrant and culturally rich city has become the perfect backdrop for our new chapter, offering an uplifting and family-centered lifestyle that’s been transformative for all of us-especially our child with special needs.
Our days are filled with the simple joys and meaningful routines of family life. Mornings often start with sweeping our breezy terrace, a quiet ritual that feels meditative as we embrace the slower pace of Mérida living. Breakfast is a family affair, often featuring fresh tropical fruits and warm tortillas from the local mercado. Homeschooling comes next, where our three kids-aged 6, 9, and 11-dive into lessons that are as much about geography and culture as they are about math and reading.
The warm, family-oriented vibe of Mérida has been especially supportive for raising children with special needs. Here, our child is thriving in ways we couldn’t have imagined. The slower pace, supportive community, and sensory-friendly activities have created a positive, nurturing environment for their development. Simple tasks like washing hair, managing routines, and incorporating play into the day have become smoother, as the overall vibe of the city encourages patience and connection.
Afternoons are dedicated to family maintenance-laundry, grocery shopping at colorful local markets, and preparing meals together. These everyday moments allow us to bond and teach life skills in a calm and enriching setting. We’ve also embraced traditions unique to the area, from visiting cenotes to exploring historic neighborhoods, making this experience as much about personal growth as it is about adventure. #meridamexico #blacktravelfeed #familytravel #mexico #lifeabroad #travel
