    I just moved to Merida 2 weeks ago. I drove myself and my kids from Charlotte, NC. When I tell you what she’s saying about the peace is so true. I haven’t been able to fully wrap my mind around why it’s so different…it just is.

    Hola, I'm a retired American living here in Cuernavaca Morelos Mexico and have lived in Mexico for many years. Best decision I ever made and I'm sure it will be the same for you once you get acclimated. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

      Thank you! I really appreciate that. What is something/place you’d recommend to experience in Mexico? I dk that I’ve heard of that part of Mexico. I looked and see it’s South of Mexico City.

      @Ourinfectioustraveldiseases Yes, it's about an hour and a half by car or bus from Mexico City. My mother owned a home in San Miguel de Allende Guanajuato Mexico for many years and she loved it there. It's a beautiful colonial town that's been voted by Conde Nast and Travel and Leisure magazines as one of the best places in the world to retire or live. It's one of my favorite places and also Lake Chapala and Ajijic near Guadalajara is nice. I'm not into hot, humid places so I enjoy the cooler weather here in Cuernavaca and there's not many Gringos here so you have to learn more Spanish and meet more locals.

    I've been in Merida for a year and from the Chicago area. I agree with pretty everything you said. This place has a lot of advantages. I 100% feel peace here...Way more of it than in the US.
    Edit: The lizards are your friends. they eat, mosquitoes, flies and other spiders. sometimes they’ll get in your house, but they present zero harm.

    Thanks for all the info. I’ve lived in Morelia with family many years ago. But I am considering moving back in a few years. This might sound funny but I’ve always heard that people learn Spanish by watching Novelas (Spanish soap operas). 😅 I love your positive attitude. Life in Mexico is beautiful. I use to love when it rained. Even the rain smells different.

      I watch shows in Spanish and listen to Spanish music 😆it helps me with hearing and understanding more lol but I am yet to formulate a lot back to say so for that reason I’m starting immersion Spanish in January! I definitely love the watching the rain and listening to the sound of birds and what not here. Thanks for stopping by, if you come back where are you thinking of landing this time?

      @@Ourinfectioustraveldiseases I’ve considered Mexico City, Guanajuato, or Morelia where all my family is from. But the majority have passed. At least the ones I kept in touch with. I’ve seen Merida in novelas only. I learn from new places and small towns from novelas. That’s also how I keep learning Spanish. I speak it well but everyone around here only speaks English. So not much opportunity to practice it.

    • @Ourinfectioustraveldiseases
      @Ourinfectioustraveldiseases  20 дней назад

      Nice! Speaking Spanish is definitely beautiful as it allows you to really dive in. I considered MX City but having a child with special needs I didn’t want to dive into such a bustling city until we all knew more Spanish. What novelas would you recommend to help learn more Spanish? Maybe you can just bounce around until you find what gives your soul the most joy/peace and feeling of home. I feel more home in Merida (soul wise) than I have anywhere in my life.

    • @Ourinfectioustraveldiseases
      @Ourinfectioustraveldiseases  19 дней назад +1

      1. No you can’t flush the toilet paper, you put it in waste bin or get a bidet to eliminate so much waste. 2. Pest control is available from natural to the super strong stuff. Thanks for swinging by.

    • @zanegood855
      @zanegood855 19 дней назад

      @@Ourinfectioustraveldiseasesthanks for responding. Uncle did a video on a city outside Merida that said they had city plumbing (no septic tank). Does city plumbing = can use toilet paper?

    • @Ourinfectioustraveldiseases
      @Ourinfectioustraveldiseases  19 дней назад +1

      In most cities in Mexico, even those with plumbing that isn’t connected to a septic tank, flushing toilet paper is not recommended. While city plumbing can handle wastewater, the pipes in many areas are narrow and prone to blockages (that you may be responsible for clearing 💩🤮). Because of this, it’s common practice in Mexico to dispose of toilet paper in a trash bin provided in the bathroom.
      Some newer homes or developments might have modern plumbing systems that can accommodate toilet paper, but unless explicitly stated (or confirmed by a landlord or host), it’s best to err on the side of caution to avoid plumbing issues. So we just use the bins in our home, we plan on getting bidets soon which I’ve seen quite a few people have in their homes here.

    To put things in a context, before moving to California at age 17 (and while growing up in Merida), in the early 1970s, I never before in my life did I see what I could consider a "black person", although the parents of one of my friends were black Cubans, (I only heard about them through another friend who used to travel to California), and although in the present there are black people in Merida (I have friends there who are black) is not something you see every day and therefore (what I guess) the look on people's faces.

    • @Ourinfectioustraveldiseases
      @Ourinfectioustraveldiseases  5 дней назад +1

      I get that! Where I grew up there were no Mexican people until in my teen years & then I could prob count on 1 hand how many, it was a black and white town in the backwoods of VA. Thanks for clearing this up, I had someone come on here and say “of course they’ve seen black ppl have you seen Mexicans”, and which my response was I was told by a few people here they hadn’t seen a black person in the flesh until meeting me. I love the idea of people just loving one another regardless of color and while ik for some that’s not the case, it’s definitely how I feel!

    It’s interesting how you described them looking at you. Im wondering if it’s just that area. Like you said they may just be curious to see a new person. I have friends who are from Veracruz and they are all different shades as well, some much darker than you and have dreads. They are full Mexican and all their family there and here look alike. And only the kids speak English. I don’t think they should have stared at you like they did bc parts of Mexico also has black people that can be mistaken for black Americans. And of course I believe you. Hopefully it doesn’t happen again and that your experience continues to be a good one.

    • @Ourinfectioustraveldiseases
      @Ourinfectioustraveldiseases  20 дней назад +1

      I don’t get offended bcz I grew up in a black and white town (literally) and the only different ethnicity we had was the people running the Chinese restaurant, when we got an exchange student in my junior year from Brazil it was mind blowing bcz the town was so small (population 3k now)! If there’s room to engage when they look I ask them what they’d like to know or what they are thinking bcz I believe it’s a desire to know/experience and if I can help create that here in their home than that’s the least I can do as a visitor. We have made associates here who are native to Merida that openly share their desire to know us as we are and not as the tv portrays us and I love that bcz I don’t believe all people in Mexico are what the news says they are! There are good people all over this world and I intend to mingle with them no matter what ethnicity🤗. Thanks for stopping by.
