Hey mike.. nice demo of that guitar... I have one in the Honeyburst finish and love it! My story is I won mine at a grand opening of a Guitar Center when I took one of my guitar students to buy him a Squire or something because the guitar he had was so bad he couldn't really learn on it. Winning that Tele was like the Guitar Gods thanking me for helping this kid out with free lessons so I told his mom (a friend of mine) she did not have to pay me for his guitar.. we both walked away winners and he's still playing and rocking out today! By the way, after looking into the story of that guitar when I'm got it... it's turns out that Fender was so impressed with how that guitar came out in that Chinese factory they decided to not to put the Squire logo branding on it but to put the Fender logo on the headstock... interesting part of the story and I thought it was worth mentioning! I really do think it's a pretty cool guitar specially considering it's built out of pine like the very first telecasters that Leo Fender made!
Wow, thanks for the back story info. It makes a lite of sense. And, congrats on the score. Winning a guitar is good. Winning a good guitar is awesome. 🤘
Yes, it was originally mentioned to be a Squier, but it was too damn good. I love that. When I bought mine, I was simply waiting for assistance from athe sales guy. I picked it up randomly and within 2 minutes, I had forgotten about the thing I went in to buy. BTW, I love the story about you student. That's exactly what I'm talking about at the end of each video when I say, "Just be good."
I just bought a used honey burst one for $323 in a Pawn Shop in March. Within a month the 5-way switch fell apart and I found a Fender American 5-way switch. I love it though, all the 7 sounds it makes. I like the twang of the 2nd position with the neck and Strat pickups. The bridge humbucker I will eventually upgrade to something hotter for metal playing. Then locking tuners will come next. Hot rodded to how I like it, it will be the best versatile cover band guitar for any genre, and I will get another one and do the same as a backup guitar. I owned a Mexican Strat, and this one sounds better on the middle and neck. I've owned Ibanez and Epiphone and the Stratocaster. It was time for me to use a Telecaster.
Hi Mike, nice video. That bridge is a Stratocaster bridge not a Telecaster one. Makes this a kind of Stratelcaster! I have a honey burst version; it's a beautiful sounding guitar and a dream to play.
I've got one in honeyburst. Ive owned and played quite a few guitars in my 27 years of playing, and this is one of the best sounding, smoothest playing guitars I've ever played. All I've done to mine is I had the bridge pickup changed to a Seymour Duncan JB. I'd say this is my favorite guitar in my collection. Awesome review, I really enjoyed it.
I just grabbed one of these for $250. Changed the rusty strings. Polished frets. Shimmed neck. Replaced a tuner grommet. Replaced a saddle screw. Everything works now and I like the stock pickups. I may reflow solder to the connections and purchase a new Jack. I’m just a little disappointed that this $250 purchase is as good as my more expensive guitars. Unplugged, it’s a beast. And I like how my honeyburst example looks with some dings and wear.
Also just got one for $250. The charcoal transparent. My fav guitar I own. Feels and sounds amazing. Others include 2 MIM telecasters, a jagstang, and a couple danelectros.
I bought one thinking I would mod it into a more traditional spec but I now understand it is perfect as is. This is the perfect evolution of what a telecaster should be.
Yup, I thought I'd be modding the crap out of it. Instead, it became one of my very favorite guitars. Every once in a while, I toy with the idea of swapping out the humbucker, which I still may do one day. And, to think this was originally supposed to be a Squier.
The guitar sounds great Mike. I bought one in sunburst because it's not just a traditional Tele. Should be getting mine in a few days. I'm really excited to get my hands on it. I own a lot of Les Pauls and I used to have a Tele also and I miss it. I was playing along with Dog's off of Pink Floyd's Animal record with my Les Paul and I said, I need a Tele for this lol. Mike, I have been playing Les Pauls and other guitars for a long time and I used to buy only American. That is no longer the case. I have now 7 guitars made in China now and some of them sound even better than some of my American ones. To each is own, but I used to be that guy lol. Now, I can pick up any guitar and if it feels and sounds good, I'll take her home with me. Don't sell her, change pickups and some electronics if you have to. You will miss her too much. Thanks for the Video, Mike.
Hi Mike, love the video! I'm on the fence of buying one of these. It would make sense te upgrade the electronics with a push/pull pot so you can engage the neck pickup while at position 1 and 2. You would have 9 tones out of 1 guitar!
I too own this guitar and it's great, imho. I had no issue with the electronics, there are only a couple of things that are not so great: 1) the humbucker is a little thin...this could be or not be an issue depending on your personal taste and guitar style. Personally I wanted a guitar with a pure clean tone so I kept it. 2) the 5 switch selector does not allow to select the bridge and the neck pickup altogether: so, technically, you don't have the typical "telecaster sound". This is easily fixable with a little work on the electric part (I have mine mounted with a push/pull tone knob instead of the original that allows for additional pickup combination).
I was checking out used Teles online a couple of years ago, just for kicks. Wasn't really in the market. But then I found that a local guy was selling the exact Modern Player you're holding. Your review and a couple of others convinced me to check it out. It was hardly played, and I think I paid $325 for it. True to your inspection and some of the comments here, the 5-way switch was pretty wimpy and not clicking into position, but was easily remedied when I replaced it with a Strat 5-way I had laying around. Sure, I might upgrade the tuners and the pickups at some point, but then again - maybe not! It's great the way it is, and it's really a chameleon because it can do just about everything! Jazz, blues, twang, rhythm, leads... Wouldn't you know that Fender hits a homer in terms of tone flexibility, traditional Tele-ness, good looks and price point - and then takes them off the market!
Yup, the funny thing is, it was a mistake. It was supposed to be a Squier but it was too good to not put a Fender logo on the headstock. I 100% believe it the absolute best deal on a Fender out there.
I have one identical to that one. Luv it. I would buy another. Wood is soft Like u a little soldering. I tried several $3 $ $4000 Fender telecasters and couple G&L’s. Didn’t have the the feel this one does. This one just feels right. Thanks for the demo. Terry
Gotta say, these were fantastic guitars. I feel like anyone who got their hands on one got a bargain. I can't even bring myself to do any modding on it. I love it just the way it is. Of course, I do really need to buy a proper traditional Tele. That will happen soon hopefully.
@@grumpymikeguitar let me know what u think. I bought the Fender telecaster ultra lux Floyd rose $2500 + tax Frits we’re awful. I cut my hands sliding down each side of neck and that was only the start. I sent it back
Full disclosure, I am not a fan of the Floyd rose trems, not even a little. That said, there is no excuse for any guitar at that price point to have frets in that condition. I think manufacturers are rushing to catch up with demand and QC is suffering.
Thanks for the honest review. I've got one of these, very well made guitar but let down by the electronics and pickups, replaced the tuners, pots, bridge, pickguard and chucked a set of lace sensors in it so now a fairly close approximation of a 90s Tele Plus, love it now :)
Hi Mike. Nice review. I have one in honeyburst, bought new around 6 years ago. It was my first Fender (I have 3 now). Did not play it much at first but it grew on me. I recently had the 5way switch replaced with a Fender switch. The original was a bit sloppy and did not feel locked when set to one of the position. I'm not fond of the bridge pickup when split. The level drops compared to how it is on the other positions. When it's double coil, it's good. Still, I like the guitar. The tummy cut is a nice to have and I don't mind that it's made in China. Thanks for your video.
First off cool review! Second you solved a mystery for me. A while back I bought a partscaster from a friend to fix up for a buddy of mine it already had the pickups replaced and a squier neck on it. But I couldn’t figure out what line the body came from now I know it has the same finish and and carves and was pine. Turned out to be a cool guitar. Thank you for the cool review and information ✌️
What a nice looking rig...I never liked teles but soon as I turned 30 and stopped liking point guitars I realy apriciate the t style headstock and body shape..iv honestly never played or touched one..but they seem awsome..and telicasters can do rock better than alot of guitars....I'd love a black guard clone..headstock and neck jst look plain comfortable..😎👍💚
Awesome, now there's 3 for 3! Add this to the 'Nashville Tele' and 'Triple Tele' (3 stock Tele bridge pups) for a must have 3 pickup Tele model! Hard to choose among them if you had to but this might be the most versatile model of the three. I'd keep it, it's unique.
Hello Mike! My first time stopping by and first time caller. I have a Honey burst model that has had the pickups changed to Lollar's in all positions. It sounds like honey to me in all points on the dial. I don't know if I would have been as happy with it without that change. I bought it like this. I am also thinking of upgrading the tuners maybe. I don't know if its necessary but I may try it. I appreciated your video and will be checking others out for sure. I am glad to hear I am not alone in thinking that it feels and plays great. I agree and feel very much the same way I would suspect about its origin. That being said I don't think i could have afforded this if it weren't. I bought it before I heard the reviews and I am glad that I did. Laters! David
I’ve bought and sold guitars over the years, but this guitar just feels amazing to play on, may not be the best quality or sound but definitely my favorite
What is the update on your guitar? What did you do? I have one of these and I really like it, even though it has the faults you said. My humbucker volume drops when I split it and it has the 60hz hum. I can get any Tele I wanted, but I keep putting up with this one (LOL). Should I put a little money in it or what? Your opinion is appreciated. I love this video because you say it like I do....here it is and this is what it sounds like !!!
Honestly, I haven't done much more than a setup, a little work on the nut, and I also refloated all of the solder o the pots and switch. I keep telling myself that I'm gonna replace the bucket, but in the end, I kind of want to keep this guitar "all original." I haven't had any real issue with 60 cycle hum when splitting the bridge pup, but that sort of thing can have a lot to do with the circuit the amp is powered by. I've taken rigs that are perfectly quiet in my studio to other places and they are noisier than hell. Also, consider ground loop issues ass a possibility. If all else fails, maybe trying some shielding paint. Anyway, I appreciate the kind words and I thank you for checking out the video.
I think I can relate. My 07 affinity Tele , new pups, I rolled the edges and filed the sprout down, everything else is stock , its next level now but idk if I want to keep it. Spontaneity indeed
I got one that is Honey Burst, was my one of my first guitars and my first Fender; my maple neck has more strongly "marbled patterned" than what i can tell in the video. Bought mine at the Guitar Center in Little Rock AR years ago; and he is correct, the internals were shoddy; in fact after a few months my selector switch came completely apart and had to replace; I do like the stomach cutout on it though, and most of all i do like the HSS config with the humbucker switch; hence why i think it was worded as "Modern" telecaster plus; and like in the video i got it as an impulse buy; it was on sale for $400; going to keep mine though
No one in the plethora of videos on these has ohmed the pups. I'll be trading for one in a couple of days so I'll know then. Question: if you upgrade, what pickups would you choose?
I have this guitar personally, for a flat basic upgrade in pick up quality, a fender generation 4 noiseless bucker for the bridge, a generation 4 Strat noiseless for the middle, and a generation 4 telecaster noiseless for the bridge
Hey man. Uou have a h s h tele with the hs coil split?? What model. U said custom. I have been wanting tge versatility of this in a tele. Any recconendatiobs
Just found one of these on marketplace - got a great deal on it, nobody seems to have any real hate for it either and that's rad. I know some are keeping them stock - but I'm going to lean away from that. Leaning Lollar for electronics.
Glad people are reviewing these. I bought mine used, on purpose. It looked great, and I have that thing where you keep buying guitars?? GAS? Anyway, I like mine just fine. Haven't had a problem with the electronics. The pickups can seem shrill but so do texas special pickups to my ears. Adjusting my amp or pedals, or the tone knob can fix that. I like the belly cut. The grain on the neck is so beautiful, I ordered a another neck from the same model from stratosphere. It was beautiful too. But I found it wouldn't fit on any tele body I had. Because the neck pocket on these is longer, and on most 22 fret fenders, you have the lip overhang thing that overlaps the body and part of the pickguard. This one doesn't have that lip, it is a straight cut on the heel like on 21 fret fenders. Weird.. Never heard of that on other guitars from Fender. So, I sent the extra neck back and enjoyed this guitar. The neck is nice, the frets are smooth, all the knobs and switches work. It wouldn't hurt to put expensive tuners on them. I agree with that. But mine stays in tune most times..lol. I paid about $300 for mine shipped. It's not my favorite guitar, but I will keep it until I start to have to sell all my guitars. I am getting old. Shipping nowadays is going to make it hard to sell off guitars. I live in the middle of nowhere, I can't give guitars away. I have tried.
I have this guitar in honeyburst. I bought it in nearly unplayed condition from a friend. I wanted to add a Bigsby and didn't want to ruin an expensive guitar. It was a challenging project, but the end result came out very well. I'll agree that the electronics could be problematic. I did have to have a new 5 way switch installed as I'll mess with mechanics, but not electronics. Also, the tone switch doesn't do much and the nut is plastic.. But with 7 pickup combinations, that's minimal. The overall fit & finish are very good and there's nothing that can't be replaced. There isn't much this guitar can't do!
Hi mike... glad to see ya back...played a few if those ...my ear didn't like them oh well...how's the HB gold top doing...had mine 6 months now ...was wandering if ya still like yours...mine has took its place as the #1....new nut an tuners plays as good as the real thing...take care
Mike, bom dia.
I did the same. I bought the same guitar and at Guitar Center. I do not care about if is made in China. Mine plays great. I never had problem with mine. I plays great.
Probably me, but, i can't tell the difference, between any of the 5 positions. I'm 74, done too many short barrelled weapons, however, i have this guitar, in black, and, enjoy playing. Good video, btw
although i dont gig anymore, i found a modern player strat new old stock, incredibly impressed, it was $500 aussie dollars, disgusted it plays and sounds about as good as usa professional which is 7 or 8 times the price
Hi Mike...the mini toggle switch did you change it out or just solder ? On mine some times it fade out the sound but if I just touch it again it works..
There was a bad solder joint on the tone pot and most of the other joints weren't the best. I decided to go ahead and resolder everything. Problem solved. The switch was fine.
@@grumpymikeguitar that's not interesting, that's atrocious! Oh, wait, that's not scalping, that's selling vintage. Anyway, you promised us close-ups of the pine. I have had pine-top acoustics. Maybe not as good as spruce, but they were fine guitars. Solid pine would be interesting. Gotta be better than solid plywood like the ones they used to make (not Fender).
They also put this guitar out in a bourbon burst finish, I snagged that one. If a fender guitar makes a sound, this guitar can make that sound. Bought mine out of curiosity and now I can’t put it down.
I am French, I have this guitar. it is excellent for all the reasons described in the video. on the other hand it lacks a bit of level compared to my other Strat and LP guitars. I increased the height of the microphones that is not enough. I have to put a compressor upstream just for the lack of 2 dB gain, otherwise this guitar is a UFO
Well, the tuner said it was in tune, and that tele holds tune exceptionally well. Any issues are probably more attributable to my clumsy fingers and my mediocre playing. 🤣

Just found one of these on marketplace - got a great deal on it, nobody seems to have any real hate for it either and that's rad.
I know some are keeping them stock - but I'm going to lean away from that. Leaning Lollar for electronics.
I always enjoy these videos.. then I remember I'm a lefty and not all models are available for us.
I can't swear to it, but I think I remember seeing a lefty version a whe back.
Chinese or not, that is a sweet looking guitar, Mike. Chinese made,,, hmm, did not know that.
Was thinking of one of these, but went for the Nashville instead
I was also surprised when I learned you could buy a "Fender" that was MIC. I don't think they do this series anymore?
They don't, unfortunately. What I find interesting is that I see them used on Reverb for more than I paid new.
Made a decision yet on keep or sell? Excellent video, m’man!
Can't say I won't ever sell it, but for now, I think I'm gonna be hanging on to it for a while.
Of course, if the price is right...
Nice axe
I am French, I have this guitar. it is excellent for all the reasons described in the video.
on the other hand it lacks a bit of level compared to my other Strat and LP guitars.
I increased the height of the microphones that is not enough. I have to put a compressor upstream just for the lack of 2 dB gain, otherwise this guitar is a UFO
I jst noticed it doesn't have a traditional bridge....cool
I like it
Cool!
Lovely guitar. And they should compensate you. We boomers follow you and boomers have money for higher -end guitars. Wake up, Fender!
Lol. Same. Impulse buy. 🤣🤣
Am i the only one hearing out of tune ...
Well, the tuner said it was in tune, and that tele holds tune exceptionally well. Any issues are probably more attributable to my clumsy fingers and my mediocre playing. 🤣
