How to Make a Rustic Flag

- In this video I show how to build a US American rustic flag from the beginning. The stars are created by using the Vcarve Desktop software which generates the gcode. The program is sent to Easel as the sender to do the carving.
The flag is 19.5"x37".
The blue field is 10.5"x13"
The stripes are 1.5" wide.

Great video! Enjoy your work and clear explanations!
Thank you for your comments. I glad that you enjoyed it.
Another cool tutorial video. Excellent gift for your grand son, he should be very proud to hang that any where, I know I would!
I’ll try to do a flag from good old pallets.
Regards from NYC friend.
PS: you sure have lots of cool tools.
Thank you very much. He does love the flag.

what is the formula for the Blue and Scarlet color that Minwax recommended and did you get it mixed at Blue or Orange big box store. Very nice job I really liked watching the stars being cut too
The formula is one of the standard colors that Miniwax offers. Just ask by name and they will mix it for you. Yes, the blue box store is where I got it. Thank you for the question. I'm glad you liked the video.
Looks great paw paw...i may make a smaller version on my xcarve in the future....easy and budget friendly lol...
Thank you
Great video top job 👍
Thank you very much.
Love this! Can you tell me what bit you are using in the XCarve? I am new to CNC, but I am enjoying it. Also, what kind of wood are you using? Thank you so much!
I use a 90 degree v-bit for the carving. I use pine for the flags. I have used the furring strips and I also use the 2x4 and resaw it down to 1 1/2". Thank you very much.
I might of missed it, but what are all of the measurements of cuts for the union, stripes and what size did you rip the 1x4's.
The flag is 19.5x37" The union is 10.5x13" The stripes are 1.5" wide
Do you have the easel file that you could share to make the stars? What size Xcarve do you have? Are you happy with it? I've been seriously considering a cnc.
This is not an Easel file. The file was created in V Carve Desktop and the gcode was sent to the Easel Software. I have the 1000mm XCarve and I love it. Do your research, I found that for the money and the customer support that is provided, the XCarve is hard to beat. I am very happy with my XCarve.
Hi Paw Paw, it seems like you do not wipe off the excess stain, but rather let it be after application. Is that your normal procedure? Ever use the white stain? Thanks.
It really depends of the project. It's the look that I'm want. The water based stains for the flags work well without wiping off the excess. Other stained projects I do wipe off the excess. I will also do multiple staining to get the look that I'm after.
I enjoy and appreciate all of your help.
I am very new.
You recommended SCARLET RED and a shade of blue for painting flags. To get Scarlet Red, did MinWax custom mix that? I can’t find it anywhere.
Thank you for all of your help.
No, the True Blue and the Scarlet Red were standard colors. I have had several subscribers report that MinWax has changed the names. I have not needed to buy any additional stain so I do not know the names of the new colors.
Get a MinWax color chart. I plan on doing that on my next visit to the store.
What’s the machine that cut out the stars and where can I fine one? Thanks Great Video!
If you make the Union out of a solid piece of wood how do you attach it to the stripes so that it's firmly attached? Do you use biscuits or a backer board?
I use the backer board and glue.
@@PawPawsWorkShop Thank You.
I am new to x carve, I pulled the union off Easel, my first cut came out 13y 15x I used scrap wood, what did I do wrong, can’t figure out how to shrink back into the 10.5y 13x got any thoughts , all your videos are very great
Highlight all the stars, that creates a box. There will be small tabs in the corners, put the mouse over one of the points on the corners and you will see an arrow, drag the box to the size that you want. I would set the workspace first to the 10.5 x 13 and set the stars in the center. Once you have the size correct then you can go to edit and in the drop down menu at the bottom select the center to material. Hope this helps.
Paw Paw’s WorkShop,
Thank You all went well perfect fit; great cut, I do appreciate your help .

Question about the application of the strips on the back with glue and nails.....as done in this video (and most others), this is a classical cross grain situation.....what happens when the flag field wants to expand or contract and these strips as applied don't allow for this movement??
I have never had a problem. The movement is minimal along the stripes and the stripes rarely glued together. They are glued only to the vertical back board.
Hello Paw Paw, did you use any finishing coat like polyurethane or laquor? thanks
Thank you, I was planning to use a water based poly. Time ran out and I had to use a matte finish spray laquer.
Which xcarve is that? I make flags on a regular bases and looking to buy one. Any recommendations?
There are many excellent CNC machines on the market. Do you research. I chose the XCarve by Inventables. That not to say it the best, but it fits my needs and over the past two years I have enjoyed it very much.
my boards seem to move after gluing . is that why you have the pvc pipes?
The PVC pipe makes it easier to put the clamps onto the boards
Do you have a link on the machine you used to make the stars? How much does a machine like that cost?
Juan Salmeron. The machine is a XCarve from inventables. Inventables.com
Hi Paw! I just got my first xcarve, got it running today. I did a test piece, it ran fine. I was setting my XY zero and I accidentally ran the z axis into the piece and it kind of lifted up the machine. I hit the emergency stop. Jogged the z axis back out. Ran a 50 star union and some of the stars in certain corners of the piece came out as totally different sizes and depths even though I ran them all at the same time at the same depth. The z axis is square and the table I’m using is reading as level. Do you have any suggestions to figure out why it isn’t carving a consistent depth? Thanks so much Paw!
The table being level is important however, it is move important that the gantry is parallel to the table. It sounds like something happened with the x axis buried into the table.
Paw Paw’s WorkShop is there anyway to re-calibrate it to make sure it’s parallel? Any ideas on what I could do to get it dialed in? I appreciate all the help!
I have videos on squaring the XCarve as well as calibration of the steps.
What are the cut settings that you use in easel to make the carve for the union only 12-13 minutes?
For the union size of 10.5x13, the cut time is 43 minutes.
Great looking flag! You glue the union but just staple the stripes with a backer. Have you ever had an issue with the stripes shifting from warping after assembly?
Never had a warping issue. I would suggest only to display these flags indoors.
Paw Paw, can you tell me the color code for the red and blue stain? I'm about to do my first American Flag. Thank you!
Keith Vanderhoeven , minwax water based wood stain. Use the clear tint base. The color is Scarlet for the red and True Blue. Both are part of the minwax colors. Lowe’s was the big box store where I got the colors
very nice craft , you are a good man mistre paw ,i wish i have father or grandfather like you , god bless you and your family .

Hello sir. Quick question. What color is the blue tint called. I'll probably have to get mine at Home Depot or somewhere like that. Thanks
The color for the union is True Blue. This is a Minwax color. The red is called Scarlet. Again, this is a Minwax color. There will be a color chart near the display of the product on the shelf for all of the available Minwax colors.
@@PawPawsWorkShop Thank you so much.
Did you use a 60 or 90 degree to cut the stars? Also I thought the blue field was 10.5X15 for a 19.5X37 flag? Am I wrong.
I use a 90 degree bit to cut the stars. The blue field is 10.5 x 13
Is it possible to carve the stars using only the Easel software? Not really wanting to spend $350.00 for Vcarve
Yes, I have shared for free the stars in the inventables project page. There is a link in the description. Here is the link also: Stars Link to file: easel.inventables.com/projects/BmqoqLJV8JyWR__sIDf7ew
@@PawPawsWorkShop Thank You so much for sharing. Used the file and the stars look beautiful. I will finish two flags this week, hoping to turn one into a coffee table. Thanks Again!
what bit did you use in your cnc machine?
I used a 90 degree v-bit from Inventables.
Hi, Im new to x-carve. I'm having trouble with my stars being consistent. The first one on the upper left is perfect as it goes down the column they increase in size and also left to right they increase in size. Any idea what could be wrong? Thanks for any help.
Either the board is thicker causing the larger size or the wasteboard is not parallel to your gantry
@@PawPawsWorkShop Thanks! I went and measured everything and made adjustments and about to run a set of stars.
@@PawPawsWorkShop I made adjustments and it defiantly improved. They are still slightly different in size. Now for some reason when I home the machine then run a carve it starts over 2" too far. when the job is done running it doesn't return to the home position but 2" from the home position.
Did you set that point as the work home position. That is different than the machine home position
you cut all the boards to 37" but how big is the field?
10x13"
I wish I was a finishing nail salesman 😀
lol, with my new paint stand with pegboard and golf tees, the fiinishing nail stock will go down.
can you tell me the dimention of the stripes??? iare 37' by
???
The flag is 37x19.5. The blue field is 10.5x13. The stripes are 1.5 inches wide.
@@PawPawsWorkShop thank you so much...
How are your stars being done in a single pass? I end with the same stars as yours, but my bit starts with an outline then fills in the star. Yours just dives straight in. What do I need to adjust? Thanks
Thank you for the question. I have used two different programs. The file that I have shared on the inventables project page was created in Easel. It cuts the outline then fills in the star. I use that file for many of the flags and my most recent flag video I demonstrated using that file.
The video that you are looking at where the stars are done in one pass was created in VCarve Desktop and I generated the gcode and sent it to Easel to act as the sender. There is nothing to adjust in Easel, you would need to create the file in the other program which uses a different tool path.
How much do you get for a flag like that
John Coonradt jr.5. A flag like this goes for $100 plus shipping UPS ground. The size is 19.5x37”.
How did you end up attaching to the wall
I used a wire hanger
D rings work well too
I didn't see/hear what color the blue is. What color do you ask for?
Look at the color chart. The names have changed. Denim Blue or indigo are good choices
@@PawPawsWorkShop Nice Job! And what store did you pick the stain up from again? Thanks
And fyi as a xcarve owner i can say yes i love it to but it does have issues ....because of its design its not a very rigid machine and it loses steps often.....and it has a lot of flex at z axis but it can do nice things ..as long as you understand its limited ability
Yes, you are right. As always, you must know the limits of your equipment and your own limitations. I have followed this for all my adventures throughout my life.
Do you know how to tile an image using easel?
You do it the same way. Try to find an area with the least amount of artwork. Being precise is the key to making it work.
But how do you split the work into parts
what kind of cnc machine did you use? Thanks
Jerry Fuqua. Thanks for the question. I use the inventables xcarve. The software for the stars was Vcarve Desktop and easel (free) from inventables as the sender of the gcode.
why didn't you make the Union(the blue part) one whole piece?
It was just a matter of the material on hand. I had all the strips cut for the flag and it was just as easy to glue up the blue field. I did not have any wide material to do the field. It would be easier if I had a 1x12. Definitely would save some time.
thank you for your time in responding@@PawPawsWorkShop
you're welcome
It is a water based stain right?
Yes, Minwax water based stain
Thank you
The blue field is called the union
Yes, you are correct
It the stain a solid or semi transparent stain
It is the MinWax clear tint base. It is a water based stain.
@@PawPawsWorkShop..I understand that. But they make a transparent, semi transparent n a solid stain.
@@PawPawsWorkShop..a solid stain would be more like painting. A semi transparent, you would see wood grain
This is more of a transparent stain. I can still see the grain and that is important to me. I have not seen the other products in the store.
Thank you, that is correct.
I know they're cheap but I still clean my brushes.
Point well taken
Even if you get that stain on your hands, it's not that hard to get off.
Yes, you are right. The water based stains are great and I really like the easy cleanup.
I dont know too many people w a CNC machine laying around in their garage to make the stars.. Another way would have been way more helpful to the average person that wants to make one of these
You are correct. However, since I have a CNC I believe in using the best tool for the job. The alternative is creating a stencil and painting the stars or using a stencil and cutting out the stars with a dremel. I have some followers that do not have a table saw. Should I not use the table saw??? I have had some people ask why I didn't use the CNC for a particular task instead of using the router table. I believe in using the best tool available. Thank you for you comments. Inventables.com is where I purchased the XCarve
Very true but a table saw is more affordable than a cnc machine im not knocking ur video in any way just giving my opinion
Check out the prices. The CNC from Inventables.com cost about $2000 and the smaller ones even less. That is less than many table saws. Granted, I have a very old Powermatic table saw. If you look at the prices of the SawStop, PowerMatic, Jet, you will pay less for the CNC. I view the CNC as another tool that has a specific purpose. Fifty years ago, I started out with a jig saw and a drill and added later a circular saw. The jig saw and the circular saw I still use in my shop today. I'm on a limited budget and it has taken a lifetime to build my shop. My first table saw I built using the circular saw. I still build some of my tools, For example, the router table and the panel saw. For years the CNC has been an interest but, you are right, the prices were way out of reach. After much research I got the one you see in the videos.
Thank you for your comments. I value your opinion. I hope that you check out the inventables website and maybe you will join the wonderful and exciting world of CNC.
Paw paw uses what he has....hes great....and i do,the same....i,dont have many tools but i use alternative methods if i dont have the tool...there is no right or wrong way to do anything......you can use a star stencil cost $1 at dollar store and paint or buy plastic stars at dollar store cost $1....and glue on....hey paw paw....
Get a union template off of Amazon and either paint or care the Stars out. If you're lazy just buy some 1 inch Stars on Amazon
You misrepresent your self. CNC MACHINE? Right
I had to stop the video while I ran to home depot to pick one up.
LOL. Did you find one?-- Machine. noun. an apparatus consisting of interrelated parts with separate functions, used in the performance of some kind of work. Yep, that works.
Lolololololol
Cnc saw that's cheating not hand made
Maybe we all should just get rid of all our tools including a hammer and chisel…not even a knife, for that is a cutting tool also. What is left, you ask. Let’s make mud huts and rub two sticks together to make fire. Oh, by the way no computer or internet, after all that’s a tool to many. While your at it get rid of your stove and refrigerator, who needs one? After all they are just tools. I do not choose a world like that. I choose to use technology. I love having a CNC, 3D printers. I choose to make what I need with the tools I have in my shop. Thanks for reminding me of choosing to teach others who desire to make what you need and want with the tools available
Sounds 👍
