When I called the Fish Hatchery, they got very excited but they transfered my call to the Fish and Wildlife in Olympia, WA. When I explained what I had seen, the woman kept telling me, maybe it was a big black dog or even a big house cat? Don't quote me on this, but some workers cleaning an area of special event and reported to have seen a large black cat back in 2007 or 2008. It wouldn't be impossible for an escaped exotic large feline to thrive in the particular area since there's a lot of brush to hide in and plenty of wildlife to feed on and not to mention the homeless people in that particular area where it was reported to be seen.

My grandma from NC talked about seeing black panthers back in the 1920s on numerous occasions. My ancestors the Cherokee people talked about this animal just as if it were just as normal as a bear or a deer. Living in NC I met lots of people who claimed to have seen the animal in the last 10 years. Years ago I found my brother's Boxer ripped to shreds close the woods where people claimed to have seen one. Someone's pet? Pet what? Black leopard or jaguar which their black color is a actually a mutation and quite rare. Neither of these cats fit the body description I've heard of either. People claim their long, low to the ground and have long puffy tails. I personally think this is a rare species the US government never wanted to acknowledge it would become a hindrance to the deforestation.

Funny thing is that happened in Virginia where I lived me whole life, it happens often. Funniest part is my friend crazy Steve has told everyone for years that he saw that big cat in the woods but no one believed him except for me, only reason I believed him was the alligators, people let pets go all the time when they get too big. Its still different seeing crazy Steve was right.

@everyday atrocity: i live in rural NC close to Appalachian state university and my grandmother and grandfather talked about what you mentioned a lot too. it’s funny because i’ve saw one of these creatures too and they are kind of different from a black jaguar. they’re long and not as muscular looking, kind of lanky and their tails are very long. i also saw one while walking down a backroad with a friend (i was in high school sneaking out) and we saw one run across the road it ran similar to a greyhound and it made no noise. it was long and big and black and the tail was unmistakable. it scared us so bad we just stood motionless holding each other for what seemed like forever then we ran back the way we came. it’s odd how people will deny this could ever be a real thing lol

My grandma used to tell us stories about seeing black panthers when she was child in NC during the 1920s. I've heard a lot of people claim to have seen them including my neighbors. Science claims they can only be rare black mutations of jaguars from South and Central America or black mutations of leopards from Africa. I think it's just a very elusive animal. Even jaguars are very hard to locate. This thing would be like it's cousin but even more scared of people because of deforestation.

I live in Western Washington state and I am in the woods a lot. I had seen different wild animals since 1998 and I know how they look like. But what I had seen three years ago in Gold Bar, WA, walking on a trail by the Fish Hatchery was a black panther or jaguar. It just strolled casually across the trail, even stopped and looked at me. I was so scared, I froze and didn't think about taking a photo. The animal wasn't interested in me and just disappeared into the woods. I walked back to my car as fast as I could and called the Fish Hatchery, telling them what I had seen. They transfered my call to the Fish and Wildlife in Olympia, WA. When I explained what I had seen, they kept arguing with me. They said, maybe it was a house cat or a dog? They said, maybe it was a bobcat? They said, there are no black panthers/cougars/jaguars in North America. I know what I had seen, it was a little smaller than a full grown cougar, as I had seen those, too and it was jet black. It makes me wonder, why do they deny these sightings, as I heard other people reporting them, too.

I saw a black cat and I'd swear to it in a court of law.
In 1997 driving north on route 29, between Lynchburg and Charlottesville, Virginia. The highway at that point was split about 50 yards apart from north and south directions, meaning there was plenty of land between those lanes. My vehicle, was going up a small slope, the setting sun directly behind me as the road twisted. Off to my left up on a rise surrounded by brush and small trees, I saw the cat. Huge, black, with a three to four foot long tail, erect. The cat's eyes reflected a golden color from the sun, in that unmistakable cat's eye shape. The cat was magnificent in its size and the head and body were facing me as if the cat were looking at me in my vehicle. I gazed at the cat for a few seconds at most as I was going 60 mph. I blinked and the cat was gone, just disappeared instantly. That was twenty five years ago, I'm 65 years old, now.

nobody bothered to snap a pic with the alway available cell phone. I have great faith in The Creator but it took me 2 years to figure out what the phantom cat sighting meant for me - The black panther is my spirit animal. Laugh all you want. I knew none of it before the sighting but the traits and characteristics of the big cat as well as those of people who have black panthers as their spirit animal, match mine so closely I simply can't deny it. Spirit animals are real, and apparently can take physical form. Could that maybe what this phantom cat phenomena is? People's spirit animals wandering around in places they shouldn't logically be? When I was a child, I was in an antique store with my mom when we visited FL. And laying on the table was an old book of illustrations of birds and animals native to Florida. I wish I had begged and begged for it. It's probably worth a lot of money now. Anyway it had a water color of a Jaguar. It was either a Jaguar or a Ocelot. It was a beautiful book. Jaguars were once indigenous to Fla.,LA, and Texas and Mexico. They are not experts if their relatives haven't lived in this country for more than a thousand years or 300 years.

Transitory lions will not have cubs, only in home range. The next summer they were on the news in town with cubs and the gfp had to publicly admit there was a small population, that fall they opened season to hunt them. Black panthers are black jaguars. A certain percentage of Jaguars are black. A lot of them are in South America and Central America. There natural habitat is supposed to come into the SW US. So Black Jaguars can be in the US. People have reported seeing them in Virginia, NC and other states.

Amazes me how ignorant people are. There is no such animal known as a panther or black panther. Jaguars which are native to the Americas can be melanistic which means they will be black, but it is extremely rare as the percentage is like 10%. I find it amusing that there are all these sightings of "black" panthers across the US yet none of spotted Jaguars which would be more probable to witness. But even then, these elusive animals have been no longer in the US with the exception of 2 or 3 that have been spotted in southern Arizona in the last 20 years or so. There are researchers who have devoted their entire life to the research of Jaguars in the Pantanal in South America which has the highest concentration of Jaguars, and some have only seen them once or twice yet in the US everyone and their grandmother have seen one.
