Hi Mark. Joe Pie has a good video in which he modifies a chuck such that he can bolt consumable aluminium blocks between the jaws. You temporarily remove the jaws, face the blocks, and use these rather than parallels to remount thin parts when facing the reverse side to be parallel. I enjoy the length of your videos btw!

Hi James, yes I've seen Joe's video and of course I could also make a chuck spider, but for parts this size, it's just as easy to make a mandrel.
      Thanks for the feedback 👍

    Enjoying your videos! 👍
I use HSS tools to turn mild steel all the time and get a nice finish.
I dont want to sound rude but the finish you seem to be getting here looks like what I get when a tool is blunt or incorrectly sharpened.
Try grinding more top rake on your HSS tool and I wohld also go more pointy with maybe a 1mm point diameter (40 thou).
It is also possible you have slop in your compound slide or cross slide. You can test that by seeing if the cut finish improves a lot when you use a heap of force pressed down on the tool post (just press it down as hard as you can with your free hand when cutting).
Hope you dont mind me speaking up. 🙂

      Hi Wiz,
      All feedback appreciated.
I do have other HSS tools with a much smaller radius on the tip, but I'm more than happy to try adding more top rake and checking for potential slop in the machine.
      Cheers
      Mark
