I've been having this ATV hard to start when cold issue for almost one year.
I replaced the fuel petcock. I clean the carburetor and replaced the diagphram inside the carburetor. These issues were a problem but I still hadn't discovered why was this atv hard to start when cold. Also once I had the ATV started and running the problem wasn't over. The ATV would stall randomly as well. I was beginning to get fed up with my Suzuki Eiger 400.
Then I received a comment from a viewer on another of my ATV repair videos.
He told me about the Suzuki Eiger 400 stator flywheel problem. Apparently it is common for the flywheel magnets to come loose on the Suzuki Eiger 400 models and the Artic Cat 400 models which basically had the same flywheel. His comment was on my mind but at the same time my ATV seemed to improve with the recent carburetor fix and I was fine tuning the fuel/air mixture on the carburetor. That's when I heard that sound of metal clank in the motor on the left side.
So immediately I thought, I think it's a flywheel magnet that made that sound.
That's when I decided to take the left side engine cover off to get access to the stator flywheel. Sure enough I found that all six flywheel magnets were loose. Luckily the stator wasn't damaged.
So this was my ignition problem all along. This was why my ATV wont start. Once I replaced the stator flywheel with a new improved stator flywheel, the ATV started immediately. It is such a weird problem to have. I never thought it would have been something so complicated. I'm so grateful that viewer commented on my video and shared this information with me.
Next time you find your atv is hard to start when cold, consider this stator flywheel problem if you have a Suzuki Eiger 400 or Artic Cat 400. It's a common problem with models...

For anyone watching this after the fact. When I did mine I turned the bike almost up on the opposite side. Didn't have to drain the oil (though an oil change will not hurt); much easier to see and work with things. Hope it helps someone.
Great repair walk through! I’ve had starting problems with my eiger 2004 for last 2 years. Spent on two visits to the bike shop to overhaul the carb, didn’t change much. I doubt I could have figured this out if not for your video, and seeing similar issue from a few others. I opened the side cover and voila all the magnets could be slid around in the flywheel, all of them had loosened from the glue. No damage to the stator or pickup sensor windings. I just ordered the new flywheel, gasket and puller kit. Installed it today. This eiger has never run better than now, it’s like new. Only has 2500km

Would you recommend starting with the flywheel replacement if you were to do it all over again (vs replacing petcock, overhauling and cleaning carburetor , etc)? I just bought an '06 Eiger and it idles OK but only if warm. No bogging when given gas, per se, that I've noticed. The previous owner had it for 10 years and didn't replace the flywheel and I'm thinking it may be a good preventative move and could help with the rough idle. Thanks much,

FYI, The flywheel nut size is M16 with a 1.5 thread pitch. My thread protector actually damaged the threads on the crankshaft and I got a thread correction die to fix it. My impact wrench did not break it loose and I tried everything to get it off. Finally got the help of an ATV dealer and his impact gun got it right off.

My Recoil Gear is seized onto the crank shaft, and I'm unsure what to do. Do you have any suggestions? What I'm talking about is this part on the pull starter at 5:34

Nice video. I have same 4 wheeler...but mine began to leak little bit of oil while reving engine. I found it from from too of cover like right where the starter/wire ...what would be best for repair...replace gasket or maybe grommet where wires go is tore ?

Just put a rotor in one, it had died years ago and the PO just let it sit.... Much rehab also, tires, brakes, seat cover...
It's never good when loose parts are bouncing around inside and engine! I have a Kawasaki Bayou that needs much attention. I hope to get to it this spring.

I watched the video of the eiger with the clutch my 2002 eiger wants to kick into gear when it starts where are those clutch plates located PS i liked the video

I ended up selling my eiger I bought new in 05. Few years ago this happend and the magnets got stuck in the flywheel and stator so the machine felt locked up. Took off the side cover and there was millions of pieces of magnets. Reason i sold it is because the transmission gears fell out and i was scared i wouldn't be able to put them back in correctly. Silly me. Wish I would of fixxed it but I still have my vinson 500 I also bought new in 05
Wish you had shown putting the rest of it back together. Is there a link for the diagram you found? All the diagrams I've found are segmented and not easy to see where everything goes back together

@@jakedillon6080 yes I did! I had found a parts diagram and pieced it back together that way. It runs great now after sitting in the woods for 10 years in pieces.

I got a 2006 Suzuki Eiger 400 4x4 no spark all lights come on new coil good battery good fuses getting good compression and it's getting gas any suggestions?????

Anybody know if this problem effects all years 02-07 Suzuki Eiger or just certain years such as the 04?
My suzuki Eiger 2004 400 was in the water river and since that, no start :-/ i put new stator and new ignition coil and no spark :-( what the problem please ?

Yes the new flywheel is built with magnet built in. Better design by far.

I have a artic cat 400 4x4 is the same engine to suzuki eiger, have a big detail,have a poor spark,i change the high tension bobine, have a new estator,i change cdi unit an regulator and the quad doesn't run
This issue I had in this video could be your problem.
Mines having similar issues. Also idles weird and dies unless i choke it a bit
That's what mine did. This is a common issue with Suzuki and Artic Cat I believe.
What is the big difference between the 400 and 500 ????

The new flywheel I installed has built in magnets. They can't fall out anymore.
During the time you were having these issues.. Did your start button still work or were you having to pull start?
my start button worked always.

Roland my 2004 Eiger 4x4 also does this clunking noise from the front diff area when I’m in 2WD and running 30 mph or so and then let off the throttle. It does this since about 2 years after I bought it new in 2004. Have you come across this issue on yours?
Tighten the adjust screw on the 4 wd

Is this problem only on the 2004 or all years?
Not sure, but there are other brands with the same problem such as the Artic Cat. I believe other years had the same issue.
