  • The Class 398 Citylink is an exciting addition to the rail network in Wales. Let’s dive into the details:
Manufacturer: These tram-train units are being built by Swiss rolling stock manufacturer Stadler Rail.
Purpose: The Class 398 Citylink units are designed to operate on both existing electrified lines and non-electrified sections of track. They achieve this versatility by being equipped with traction battery packages in addition to the standard 25 kV 50 Hz AC overhead supplies.
Formation: Each unit consists of three cars, and they can be coupled together to form a six-car unit.
Passenger Capacity: A three-car unit can accommodate up to 256 passengers. The design includes features like level boarding, space for bicycles, wheelchairs, and pushchairs, as well as plug and USB-A style sockets for passenger convenience.
    Dimensions:
Train Length: Approximately 40.07 meters (131 feet 6 inches).
    Width: 2.650 meters (8 feet 8.3 inches).
Floor Height: 915 mm (36 inches) at the doors.
Speed: These tram-trains can reach a maximum speed of 62 mph (100 km/h).
Traction Motors: Each unit is powered by four TSA TMR 42-31-4 traction motors, each providing 150 kW (201 hp), resulting in a total power output of 600 kW (805 hp).
Electric System: They operate on the 25 kV 50 Hz AC overhead system.
Depot: The Class 398 units will be based at the Taff’s Well depot.
Entry into Service: The expected entry into service is late 2024.
These modern tram-trains will soon be seen on the Rhondda, Merthyr, and Cardiff City lines, as well as the Cardiff Bay Branch. Their flexibility and passenger-friendly features make them a valuable addition to Wales’ rail network.
