Fix A Weller Solder Gun!

- In this video, I show a Weller Solder gun that I received from my neighbor in a trade. The solder gun was not getting hot enough. With a quick adjustment, this gun is working like new. Unlike many cool finds, this gun brought back memories, as I used a similar gun back in high school (many years ago) to do my final senior project. This solder gun will serve as an excellent addition to my stuff.
If you are having an issue with a solder gun that does not get hot enough, I hope that you will find this video helpful.
THANKS! You saved my Weller Solder Iron from the trash! I bought it for my church robotics group a few years ago. It worked a few times and stopped. Today I picked it up to throw away but decided to google the reviews and a repair video and came across you! Thanks so much for the helpful hints!
Having watched several videos with other (more complicated) approaches, I thought your solution way too simple to be useful. However, being so simple, I did it first. It fixed my low heat Weller issue immediately. Great job, thank you.
Thank you so much! I have one of these. It belonged to my late father and hadn't worked for years. I always said that I'd try fix it one day and refused to throw it out!. That day was today thanks to your video. I removed the tips and cleaned it with a bit of sandpaper. Five minute job and now it works perfectly. Let me offer you a virtual beer 🍻. Great video.
Thanks, I don't drink beer but will take some lemonade 😁
@@DIYOneForAll I don't drink beer either so lemonade is good 🤣
Immediate, amazing, instant hot. Thank you.
This illustrates a principle that I learned decades ago, and see it again and again:
When someone answers a question and the answer is COMPLICATED, it's ALWAYS BAD - either ignorant or conniving.
When someone answers a question and the answer is SIMPLE, it could be BAD or GOOD - either ignorant or brilliant.
You just prevented me from throwing away my grandfathers soldering iron. He passed in 2001 and I still have some of his old tools. Thank you
You never stop learning. Thank you. Philip S. Wales UK
I just bought one at a garage sale the other day. It wont heat up so now its like mid night here as I watch this and I'm tempted to go out to my shop and give this a try right now!
UPDATE: It worked...thanks.
I was ready to throw my Welles model 8200 out it wouldn’t get hot. I watched your video and it works great . Thanks
I had a very old Weller Junior that had quit working. I tightened up the connections, as you suggested, and it's back at 100 percent. Thanks for the quick advice.
Fixed mine! Thank you!!!!
Thank you so much! I've had this problem for a while and couldn't find a way to fix it until this video!
I am indeed happy that the video has been helpful to someone. Thanks for the comment. Cheers
Wish I found this six years ago when you uploaded it 😝 !!!
My cooper tools weller 8200 has an updated design utilizing an Allen wrench but same principle. I pulled out the tip and wire brushed it to a shine. Made sure to retighten the Allen screws to make a good contact. That’s the trick. (A GOOD CONTACT). Thank you 🤙
Perfect fixed my grandpa's ancient iron, now I get to keep using a piece of history :)
Thanks for posting this. My soldering gun is pretty new but takes forever to solder a joint with heavy wires. It will glow after 1/2 minute or so but the red glow never makes it all the way to the tip. I remember way back in the 60s using an old soldering gun that never had this problem. I'm going to check the tightness of the tip as you showed here. I'll report back whether it worked or not when I use the gun later this week. The funny thing is I had bought another gun and, when it wouldn't heat up enough for general soldering, I bought another gun very similar to yours but neither of them heat up enough. I forget what the wattage is. I'd have to dig them out to check but I remember that when I bought the second one, I chose the highest wattage soldering gun I could find. It appears much like yours only newer. I think it's a brand name such as Weller, if I remember correctly.
Tnanks again.
Mean while I’m here with my somehow working soldering gun but with a really rusted cylinder thing
This worked for me, too. Thanks!
Thank you
Nice work dude, mine is fixed thanks to u.
Wow thanks man, that's what it was
Solved my problem! Thank you :D
worked on my solder gun i paid 2 dollars for , great simple fix
Thanks, I was getting crazy because it stopped heating suddenly and I couldn't figure out why
Also - don't let the silver part of the electrodes contact each other. They can short.
I have one that I got from my mom boss home an it never hot enough . I just did this an it works
Many thanks ur a G
That might be my problem, I might try and see if it works
Aaaaaaaaaaaaa! It's working now.
Thank you

All the best with it, my friend.

I've got an older D550 Weller. I tested it with a watt meter. It's a 240/325 watt model. The low 240 comes in at about 230 and decreases with heat. The 325 (which is why I bought it) comes in about 100 watts low. I've clean the tip and tried to tin it. A mediocre success. I made sure that the tip to gun connections are tight and I cleaned the tip where it meets the gun "barrels". I removed the left side. The two coil solder points on the left side of the switch did not look like a professional solder job and there were very tiny melt divots in the plastic. Any comments would be welcome. How can I get my 325 watts nominal?????
