  • How were the Ni‘matullāhī masters successful in reviving Ni‘matullāhī Sufism in Shi‘ite Persia? This lecture investigates the revival of Ni‘matullāhī Sufi order after the death of the last Indian Ni‘matullāhī master, Riḍā ‘Alī Shāh (d. 1214/1799) in the Deccan. After the fall of Safavids, the revival movement of the Ni‘matullāhī order began with the arrival in Persia of the enthusiastic Indian Sufi master, Ma‘ṣūm ‘Alī Shāh, during the last quarter of the eighteenth century. Later, at the beginning of the nineteenth century, Persian masters of the Ni‘matullāhī Order were able to solidify the order’s place in the mystical and theological milieu of Persia. Ma‘ṣūm ‘Alī Shāh and his disciples soon spread their mystical and ecstatic beliefs all over Persia. They succeeded in converting a large mass of Persians to Sufi teachings, despite the opposition and persecution they faced from Shi‘ite clerics, who were politically and socially the most influential class in Persia. The lecture demonstrates that Ḥusayn ‘Alī Shāh, Majdhūb ‘Alī Shāh, and Mast ‘Alī Shāh were able to consolidate the social and theological role of the Ni‘matullāhī order by reinterpreting and articulating classical Sufi teachings in the light of Persian Shi‎‘ite mystical theology.
Reza Tabandeh is currently a Postdoctoral researcher on Islam and Sufism at Brock University. He received his BA from York University on Religious Studies. He completed his MA on the great Sufi poet of 13th century, Rumi, at the University of Toronto. He earned his PhD in Islamic Studies from the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies at the University of Exeter. His doctoral work examined the revival of Ni‘matullāhī Sufism in Persia, with a focus on the second generation of Ni‘matullāhī masters, during the period following the return of the order to Persia from India (1776 C.E). His Postdoctoral research at the University of Toronto investigated the love of “People of the house” (means the household of the Prophet) and its philosophy and beliefs practiced by Sufis master during 12th to 15th century. Dr. Tabaneh was invited as a guest lecturer on contemporary Shi‘ite Sufism in Irān, with special attention toward Ni‘matullāhī Sufism and persecution of Sufis in Persia, at Brock University, the University of Toronto, and York University. He was also a visiting lecturer in University of Bradford, UK, on issues related to cultural influences of the Islamic states (Iran, Lebanon and Palestine). He co-convened an international conference, “Sufis and Mullahs: Sufis and their Opponents in the Persianate World” with Dr. Leonard Lewisohn, and edited the conference proceedings as a book (“Sufis and Their Opponents in the Persianate World,” Irvine, CA: UCI Jordan Center for Persian Studies, 2020). He has published scholarly articles and book chapters on the philosophy and beliefs practiced by Sufi masters from the 12th to 15th centuries. His recent book is entitled, “The Rise of the Ni‘matullāhī Order: Shi’ite Sufi Masters Against Islamic Fundamentalism in 19th-Century Persia”.

I feel like the book serving as healing for trauma you experience in young age because of sudden passing of your dear father. You are in my prayer. Sufism is about unity of being so as Taoism so as Buddhism. Ways might be different but all saying the same thing by using different words. Zen (which derive from Persian word Jan) or Chi or Holy Spirit are all one. The Noor (light) or energy (frequency & vibration) of the universe guide us all toward the source. Kashf happens silently. Lotf (grace) helps us to overcome suffering. Sabr (patience) and Iman (faith) keeps us in line to dive deeper in our soul. Zekr (meditation) & fekr (mind) harmony balance us on our seyr (path) and solook (journey). This path (tarighat) is beyond any book. Path of heart (rah e del) has the GPS. The GPS is inside every beings.
