New York City’s New Congestion Pricing, Explained

- New Yorkers lose around 117 hours a year in traffic in Lower Manhattan. Now, New York City is turning to congestion tolls-like the ones seen in London and Singapore- to help unclog the roads by charging drivers to enter busy parts of the city. That means you’ll soon have to pay to drive in Manhattan’s Central Business District. But can congestion tolls reduce traffic, and will we see them in other parts of America?

Do you think congestion tolls are effective?
No. They already started it over here in California on the highways.
Yes, if they're dynamically adjusted to maintain target traffic levels and don't exempt any kinds of traffic.
It all depends on what the money is used for, and if congestion charges are used without other transit funding. Many US cities have over the last decade made roads more hostile to cars without providing a viable alternative. London and NYC have two of the largest train systems in the world. Until the average US city has public transit to match, this will just be a thorn in everyone's side.
No! This is short sighted from the MTA. Why punish citizens going to their jobs. This is just a money grab by our government!
He failed to mention that MTA employees are exempt from the tolls .
The solution isn't just making driving harder and more expensive. They need to also make transit better, faster, more reliable, and less dangerous.
Nah. That would be a just and equitable way to address the issue. There’s nothing in it for the wealthy.
Right, they are talking about doing it in LA which is frankly ridiculous considering there is barely any public transport options here, it won’t decrease traffic it will just increase the price to drive
That's exactly what they are doing.
Ahh, "we shouldn't make driving harder until transit is better" schtick.
The year; 2086, New York has 300 subway lines, 4000 buses, that can take you into the city in 3 minutes, and 30 million people. The local AI News bot is speaking with automobile drivers about a proposed congestion pricing that was held back in 2024 from protests: "Looks I'm alls for congestion pricing, once they make the transit service better, until then it's just a tax on drivers" says Klaxon, a local driving resident. Klaxon has personally killed 4 cyclists through driving, but through additional driving protections instituted because of the driving lobby in 2039 killing pedestrians and cyclists is now a minor fine of $100, which drivers still protest is too high.
"This has been AI Bot news, keep driving with GM and Ford Motors, our sponsors"
You pay taxes for city workers, equipment, concrete, paint, guardrails, stoplights, etc. Now you pay to drive on what you already pay for. Sounds like a money making scheme. Am I wrong?
It's just a money grab.
Exactly!
Nope. Collegtive traffic is better in a city like New York. A car free New York would be best.
If they make driving harder then they have to make public transit much much much better.
That's the plan.
Thats never happened! 😂 never will
thats exactly what they're doing. alle the money goes into the mta
@@404russia
First they should start on making public transportation safer it's not safe people are getting killed down there and on the buses enough with all this nonsense riding bicycles
Maybe the mta should open there books
So if you commute by car to lower Manhattan from upstate or Jersey you have to pay like 15 cross the bridge and 15 for this so you pay $30 just to commute, not even counting gas.
It's nothing but a stealth tax. Plain and simple.
Super stealthy
NJ should start charging NY residents tolls
I wasn’t aware that New Yorkers ever went to NJ 😂
You literally can’t go anywhere In NJ without paying a toll anyway. That’s how the state is.
Agreed.. also start rightfully claiming the NEC line and all the and associated with it.
@@notthatguy4703You must not be from NYC.
Why? We don't go to NJ 🤣
You cant just pop up with a conjestion charge and hope that it’ll stop people from driving - you need a good public transportation system that functions alike london and singapore for it to work
LA’s metro is next to useless, and certainly CANNOT withstand rush our commuting traffic for people switching to public transportation
NYC subway has 472 station stops, London has 272 stops, Singapore has 134 stops. NYC has 665 miles of subway tracks, London 250 miles, Singapore 140 miles. The cost to upgrade NYC subway and its stops is going to be huge. Congestion pricing may only help one part of the city, not the whole. Other parts of the city will bear more traffic, congestion, emission.
Watch people BACK OUT from the ZONE 😂
In london there is free of charge at specific times. In Nyc the charges will reduced but not free
Because it’s a cash grab.
If the roads are near-empty, then they should probably make it free. We'll see how it pans out.
It's a money grab, simple and plain. They had a traffic plan during 9/11 and single occupancy vehicles were banned after 6 am. It worked fine. So their was a solution in place. Now the cars are being allowed but for an high fee.
The real way to limit and reduce car usage in cities is to reduce space for cars and relocate space for pedestrians, bikes, and busses. At the same time investing more in public transit.
As long as driving in cities is allowed, there will always be too many people trying to drive and causing traffic and pollution.
There are certain tasks that are just infeasible without a vehicle, like construction, plumbing, retail deliveries, etc. People should be able to pay for those services.
It seems to me people don’t know the definition of “cars”. Cars include trucks and vans/UPS/Con-Ed/school bus/taxis and rideshares issued by NYC besides private cars (least ownership in NYC). Inflation may have a straw in the back if doing business become expensive. “Cars” move people and goods.
Not everybody wants to ride a stupid bicycle around
He failed to mention that he and other MTA employees are exempt from the tolls.
No. They will not
Where did you get that info? 😂
Nope
He makes 400.000 plus a year and lves in Brooklyn he will drive everyday to work
Where can I get a ghost tag?
" congestion pricing explained" in one word, SCAM
These people are evil.
Absolutely agree
It is absolutely a money making scheme. It’s a tax. “You pay to drive where you live”.. that’s bonkers.
ok and? you pay to drive anyways with the cost of gas and vehicle ownership... just don't drive, its that simple
Haha, the crazy thing is you already pay an insane premium to drive in NYC. Now you pay more and don't forget the new congestion charge.
Bureaucrats always find a new way to squeeze more tax money from voters
So let charge ppl so they won’t drive downtown wait still traffic? Ok let’s go up on the price smh
So the bad system is now come to a point where the same system designers now charge fees to the people playing along with the system
How can they do this when there's really no alternative?? Has anyone tried to use buses or subways in New York City? The public transit in that city is abhorrent
So you are spitting on our transit system? “Abhorrent” is a strong adjective. What did you dislike about it? I mean it has issues but it seems to me that millions of people use it every year to make billions of trips. Most cities in the world don’t have a system near as comprehensive vast and efficient as ours, if they even have one in the first place. So? Explain
@@damianoandreaarrigoni4401no offense does t really have to answer to you and I am grateful for transit in my area I live in philly and we have septa and where I live it gets me most places but some spots yeah it doest extend in the suburbs too much. It's all the delivery apps amd Uber amd lyft thay really created all the traffic over the years before them traffic wasn't any where near as bad
We mustn't tax forgetfulness. There should always be barriers and payment upon entry to a payment zone. I am petrified to drive into Birmingham (my nearest city with charging for a clean air zone), because I know how forgetful I am. Taking payment upon entry would prevent the problem.
I normally get angry when people break traffic laws but when it comes to congestion pricing idc
NY added bus lanes and put speed camera everywhere. Ofc they’re gonna have traffic
Charging to enter the zone is not the solution to congestion. People will find ways around it. They will enter and stay longer. Traffic will increase at night, increasing noise. People will pay the same for a quick delivery as for driving around all day, or multiple days. Some will be sleeping in their cars. Or taking turns with them. The area just outside the zone will get worse. Parking there will disappear.
A better approach is to charge people, not for entering, but for driving in congested places. There are already cameras all over the city, and more [or sensors] could be added if needed, to charge people at various intersections--the busy ones, but also some backstreets to avoid rerouting traffic too much. The amount per intersection could be small but would add up depending on driving not entering, Manhattan. This is more targeted and addresses the actual problem head on while eliminating or at least lessening the problems listed above. Great idea, right?
These same cameras/sensors could be used to regulate traffic lights, instead of old-fashioned timers. This could also dramatically ease traffic, noise, pollution, fuel consumption, and congestion.
Congestion pricing is the biggest scam ever designed. And the sad part is, I was personally told that by the same people who are implementing it It's just the way to get money
So 50% of the vehicles are Uber Lyft and taxis . Hmm just ban those .
Congrats, you just spiked the demand for downtown parking. Good job.
The kicker, they only have to pay a $2.50 fee……….. which will also be passed the to rider. 😂 In case anyone ever believed that this was actually about trying to reduce traffic. 🤣
Maybe they should start digging tunnels or something, with all that extra money.
Just another reason for people to move to a different state, NY is sadly going downhill
the only positive is emissions going down,...for that area. The cars are just going to find other routes ie thru the other boroughs, creating an emissions problem there. so the rich in Manhattan get cleaner air, and the middle/low class around suffer from bad air quality.
This is good. More excuses - besides crime, parking, tunnel and bridge tolls, traffic - for a NJ resident to avoid visiting NYC.
The only thing it benefits is the city and state of New York. All it does is generate more revenue. As if the DMV taxes weren't enough.
It’s all about the money
This is ridiculous! They should just buldoze half of NY and build 24 lanes of highway and it should be free!
The Bottom Line is that this will turn Lower Manhattan into a Ghost Town. Lost jobs, lost tourism and street level small businesses will suffer.
What if you live in the zone, can you drive anywhere and not incur another expense
No, you move your car you get charged although residents do get a tiny discount in London
If you live in the zone your screwed if you work in the zone your also screwed
They're charging drivers for the decline in riders on public transportation since covid and the biggest beneficiaries will be the businesses outside of the toll area
EXCELLENT POINT
This is part of it indeed.
This is why your really paying
Because citizens are to soft & scared to speak up
Billions on wars and while our infrastructure crumbles.
the solution is to limit the amount of taxis cars in the city PERIOD they are the ones doing the traffic and of course is a money making scheme
You solve congestion 2 ways 1) employers allow more people to work remotely, we don't need to do every job at the office with modern technology. 2) have a good public transit system. A good public transit system is affordable, is maintained/not old falling apart and disgusting, it can get you almost anwhere in about the same time it takes to drive and its reliable. NYC has one of the countries better public transit systems but its old/falling apart, its too expensive and its not super reliable trains are often late or cancled. I saw one of my sisters paycheck and the city took more than $100 out of it, there is also a high sales tax and subway tickets are not cheap when you add up all these costs the subway is actually very expensive and its not wonder some people feel ripped off and jump the turnstiles. With all this money you can't have a decent public transit system REALLY? If you want an example of a good cheap public transit system look to Europe. The city says it needs more tax money but why would I give more money to my drunken partying uncle Sam, I would tell Uncle Sam to act responsibly and live within his means like the rest of us? If my city did something like this I would move and never visit again as a tourist.
This will only help nyc not the suburbs we have limited mass transit since beginning of pandemic
They can kill business, raise prices 😂 I am not going there for the same price if i have to pay 15 for the bridge and additional $20 for the zone. We will see more of those DAMAGED and UNREADABLE License Plates 😂
So they admit it’s a greenwashed cash grab. Great, thanks.. we already knew that. Time for NJ to implement additional fees for drivers coming from NY as well as implement their own congestion fee. $45 to drive from Tribeca to Jersey seems reasonable, no? Staten Islanders coming to NJ can also catch some fees.
Even the wealthy people are gonna feel it when all of their drivers start racking up these charges. Nobody in NYC is happy about this so the biggest joke is how much (of our money) they’ve spent on PR campaigns to “sell” us this money making scheme that we never had a say in anyway. Meanwhile the MTA and its service will continue to rot… it’s been proven time and time again that the MTA does not lack revenue.. it lacks common sense and any ability to carry out important projects in a timely or cost-effective manner.
It’s just a money grab
This is a horrible idea because who can trust that 100% of the money will be used properly. The $$ will be wasted. Count on it 😮
The money will be used to fund pay raises for local elected officials. Where usually there's no stalemate on that vote. It is in fact unanimous.
It's pretty easy to document all the transactions. Walmart and Amazon do it just fine at a much larger scale.
Israel needs more money😁
They want FULL PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION CONTROL
Uber and Ltft created more of this problem, and this will cause more pollution in Upper Manhattan, Jersey, and the outer boroughs.
Yup’
And another reason why I would never go there😊
Dodger baseball stadium here in Lis Angeles is building a gondola to carry people from a more remote parking area yo the stadium. This is the answer.
My question is, how are those cameras going to identify the fastest growing mide of transportation. Namely E-Bikes and scooters? No registration, operator license or license plates.
It’s only for cars/trucks, not bikes or scooters
@@gothamscholar6384 I just read the recent article about it at the KCRW website which says it's for pedestrians, not vehicles. But like busses, they'll let people carry their foldable scooters I'm sure. No reason for a bike rack since the distance to the gate is short. And only a fool would leave a bike unattended in that neighborhood.
Nah. Not Lis Angeles. Not “Lis Angeles.” /
Watch this backfire
Why is it that poor people are always the ones to suffer being taxed
Make all taxis electric like Madrid
❤❤❤
So from 60th St. down is just for rich people is that it??? New York has become a shit show.. take take take for horrible MTA service
I hate when they talk emissions cuz even if everyone drives EV you will still be charged tolls
how about reversing all the stupid Vision zero stuff that created so much congestion where they never was traffic
Maybe if the mta opened its books will would believe them . Fun fact mta cops will not pay this .
All this bullshyt is just another way to push the working man out of the city. Makes no sense why anyone would vote yes for this. Pay a toll on the bridge. Then pay a toll to enter the city where every major bridge or tunnel enters Nonsense
NYC officials created the traffic
Will the prices be higher to subsidize prices for POC
No

Maybe put more money into public transportation if driving is such an issue. This is gonna destroy their local economy. People are already fleeing Cali and NYC due to cost of living and bs such as this.
Why not just implement AI traffic lights that will change according to traffic conditions. This is just a tax in plain sight.
Because we need less cars not more out there.
AI doesn't magically make more cars fit into less space.
@@gregordaviesDo you know how traffic works? All you do with less cars is shorten congestion time, not intensity.
So if congestion lasted for 5 hours it will now last 4, but the amount of cars in the streets will be the same since everyone is trying to get into the city at the same time. And since they’re thinking about shortening driving space, congestion will remain the same.
The OP was right, the way to make traffic better is to get the cars moving better, not having less cars.
I'm all for it. Anything that'll bring on the real estate collapse faster. I'm looking for a 50-70% reduction in prices in the 5 boros..
Mta will always have fare beaters.. now there gonna need more police to catch them.. so when the test coming out??
Work or NOT..... its just a money Grab
you Really think they care about congestion😅 dont be naive or a fool or a sheeple!
Total cash grab, thats what it is
As a commuter I will make sure I'm filled with gas and have plenty of water and snacks because the days of spending even a penny of my money in this city are OVER.
All drugs and prostitutions should be legal people should watch the ted talk About a world without money.
This is a lame idea that’s just a regressive tax by another name
Wake up people who havent already given up their vehicles. dont be like the others who say its easy to simply stop driving or use public transit. Theyre fools. Youve worked hard for the privilege to drive whenever you want whereever you want vote against given that up and more of your paycheck.
How you get people to pay when they don't pay parking tickets. So evertime you cross back and forth how many times you will be charge .
This is incredibly short sighted and should scare every citizen. These roads are public and should be free to use. Why punish people to get to their jobs and homes. Tolls are just a way of a government stealing from its citizens.
I can understand doing this in NYC, but most of the other cities in the U.S. don’t have good public transportation. Especially the cities on the west coast. Seattle’s public transportation is absolutely horrible.
Included: SF Bay Area and LA Metro and Las Vegas.
No, it's not. Seattle Sound Transit is expanding to other areas. LA Metro is expanding and improving. And the San Franciso Bart has new trains now and the Muni is pretty decent as well. And I'm a New Yorker saying this who rides the MTA Transit every day.
@@ChariotManGaming85 Seattle Sound transit is a joke. They do nothing but waste money making mistakes over and over again. They constantly get rid of bus stops and the train system they are building has less than 10 stops. Unless you are taking a bus just from neighborhood to neighborhood in Seattle, you spend most of the time in traffic anyway so you might as well drive your own car. It’s not that convenient at all. I’m telling you this as someone born in NYC,raised and lived my childhood in NYC and Tokyo who now lives in Seattle.
@@ChariotManGaming85 When compared to the New York City subway system, all three areas mentioned are very limited in service. For example, the SF BART trains will take you to the city you need to go, but you also need to use the bus system to get to your final destination. In New York City, people get by without having driver's licenses. In San Francisco you still would have to drive to the local BART station which can be 5 to 10 mi away. So you might as well just drive.
@@ChariotManGaming85 Seattle transit is a joke compared to DC and New york and even these are jokes compared to other countries. So a joke of transit.

This is great! Driving needs to be more expensive and inconvenient than public transit for people to make a switch. Love that they are investing revenue into public transit systems. I hope more US states adopt this.
I get NY but comparing London to Seattle? Are you nuts? Going 20miles in a bus would be 3h! Driving transit is simply not an option, I'd rather stay in traffic jams than pay to go to work.
Money grab.
