New York City’s New Congestion Pricing, Explained

  • New Yorkers lose around 117 hours a year in traffic in Lower Manhattan. Now, New York City is turning to congestion tolls-like the ones seen in London and Singapore- to help unclog the roads by charging drivers to enter busy parts of the city. That means you’ll soon have to pay to drive in Manhattan’s Central Business District. But can congestion tolls reduce traffic, and will we see them in other parts of America?

    0:57 How congestion zones works
2:40 Congestion tolls can be divisive
    3:47 Do congestion tolls work?
5:38 Will congestion tolls expand in America?

It all depends on what the money is used for, and if congestion charges are used without other transit funding. Many US cities have over the last decade made roads more hostile to cars without providing a viable alternative. London and NYC have two of the largest train systems in the world. Until the average US city has public transit to match, this will just be a thorn in everyone's side.

Ahh, "we shouldn't make driving harder until transit is better" schtick.
The year; 2086, New York has 300 subway lines, 4000 buses, that can take you into the city in 3 minutes, and 30 million people. The local AI News bot is speaking with automobile drivers about a proposed congestion pricing that was held back in 2024 from protests: "Looks I'm alls for congestion pricing, once they make the transit service better, until then it's just a tax on drivers" says Klaxon, a local driving resident. Klaxon has personally killed 4 cyclists through driving, but through additional driving protections instituted because of the driving lobby in 2039 killing pedestrians and cyclists is now a minor fine of $100, which drivers still protest is too high.
"This has been AI Bot news, keep driving with GM and Ford Motors, our sponsors"

The cost to upgrade NYC subway and its stops is going to be huge. Congestion pricing may only help one part of the city, not the whole. Other parts of the city will bear more traffic, congestion, emission.

The real way to limit and reduce car usage in cities is to reduce space for cars and relocate space for pedestrians, bikes, and busses. At the same time investing more in public transit.
As long as driving in cities is allowed, there will always be too many people trying to drive and causing traffic and pollution.

  • @jimwacker6582
    @jimwacker6582 4 месяца назад +4

Charging to enter the zone is not the solution to congestion. People will find ways around it. They will enter and stay longer. Traffic will increase at night, increasing noise. People will pay the same for a quick delivery as for driving around all day, or multiple days. Some will be sleeping in their cars. Or taking turns with them. The area just outside the zone will get worse. Parking there will disappear.
A better approach is to charge people, not for entering, but for driving in congested places. There are already cameras all over the city, and more [or sensors] could be added if needed, to charge people at various intersections--the busy ones, but also some backstreets to avoid rerouting traffic too much. The amount per intersection could be small but would add up depending on driving not entering, Manhattan. This is more targeted and addresses the actual problem head on while eliminating or at least lessening the problems listed above. Great idea, right?
These same cameras/sensors could be used to regulate traffic lights, instead of old-fashioned timers. This could also dramatically ease traffic, noise, pollution, fuel consumption, and congestion.

You solve congestion 2 ways 1) employers allow more people to work remotely, we don't need to do every job at the office with modern technology. 2) have a good public transit system. A good public transit system is affordable, is maintained/not old falling apart and disgusting, it can get you almost anwhere in about the same time it takes to drive and its reliable. NYC has one of the countries better public transit systems but its old/falling apart, its too expensive and its not super reliable trains are often late or cancled. I saw one of my sisters paycheck and the city took more than $100 out of it, there is also a high sales tax and subway tickets are not cheap when you add up all these costs the subway is actually very expensive and its not wonder some people feel ripped off and jump the turnstiles. With all this money you can't have a decent public transit system REALLY? If you want an example of a good cheap public transit system look to Europe. The city says it needs more tax money but why would I give more money to my drunken partying uncle Sam, I would tell Uncle Sam to act responsibly and live within his means like the rest of us? If my city did something like this I would move and never visit again as a tourist.

Time for NJ to implement additional fees for drivers coming from NY as well as implement their own congestion fee. $45 to drive from Tribeca to Jersey seems reasonable, no? Staten Islanders coming to NJ can also catch some fees.
Even the wealthy people are gonna feel it when all of their drivers start racking up these charges. Nobody in NYC is happy about this so the biggest joke is how much (of our money) they’ve spent on PR campaigns to “sell” us this money making scheme that we never had a say in anyway. Meanwhile the MTA and its service will continue to rot… it’s been proven time and time again that the MTA does not lack revenue.. it lacks common sense and any ability to carry out important projects in a timely or cost-effective manner.

@@gregordaviesDo you know how traffic works? All you do with less cars is shorten congestion time, not intensity.
So if congestion lasted for 5 hours it will now last 4, but the amount of cars in the streets will be the same since everyone is trying to get into the city at the same time. And since they’re thinking about shortening driving space, congestion will remain the same.
The OP was right, the way to make traffic better is to get the cars moving better, not having less cars.

Wake up people who havent already given up their vehicles. dont be like the others who say its easy to simply stop driving or use public transit. Theyre fools. Youve worked hard for the privilege to drive whenever you want whereever you want vote against given that up and more of your paycheck.

This is incredibly short sighted and should scare every citizen. These roads are public and should be free to use. Why punish people to get to their jobs and homes. Tolls are just a way of a government stealing from its citizens.

I can understand doing this in NYC, but most of the other cities in the U.S. don’t have good public transportation. Especially the cities on the west coast. Seattle’s public transportation is absolutely horrible.

No, it's not. Seattle Sound Transit is expanding to other areas. LA Metro is expanding and improving. And the San Franciso Bart has new trains now and the Muni is pretty decent as well. And I'm a New Yorker saying this who rides the MTA Transit every day.

@@ChariotManGaming85 Seattle Sound transit is a joke. They do nothing but waste money making mistakes over and over again. They constantly get rid of bus stops and the train system they are building has less than 10 stops. Unless you are taking a bus just from neighborhood to neighborhood in Seattle, you spend most of the time in traffic anyway so you might as well drive your own car. It’s not that convenient at all. I’m telling you this as someone born in NYC,raised and lived my childhood in NYC and Tokyo who now lives in Seattle.

@@ChariotManGaming85 When compared to the New York City subway system, all three areas mentioned are very limited in service. For example, the SF BART trains will take you to the city you need to go, but you also need to use the bus system to get to your final destination. In New York City, people get by without having driver's licenses. In San Francisco you still would have to drive to the local BART station which can be 5 to 10 mi away. So you might as well just drive.

This is great! Driving needs to be more expensive and inconvenient than public transit for people to make a switch. Love that they are investing revenue into public transit systems. I hope more US states adopt this.
