hey kirk, my home was built in 1989. Its got textured stucco. Im looking to smooth it out to give a modern look. The first floor of the house is framed with concrete block. The second floor is framed with wood. The home is in miami- hot and humid. I have guys telling me that they will power wash the home, then apply 3 coats. I know nothing about plastering. I am going to hire a professional but i want to have the knowledge for myself. i am hearing different things from all of them. Given the aforementioned, and given our hot humid and rainy climate here in miami, how would you tackle this job for the best possible smooth finish, to minimize cracking. from what ive researched so far, it would be a good idea to use acrylic stucco. also what thicknessshould be used? How many coats? Should the stucoo be grinded down first before presure wash? do we use multiple coats of acrylic, or apply acrylic only after applying cementitous coats? its a big house 4600 sq ft. What would be the best brands we could use?
Hey Greg, no we didn't use cheaters. If I wanted to I could have purchased the BMI with accelerators, and or the accelerated w/Fibers. I applied Standard BMI base coat with Fibers for this project and applied it over studs which is a real test for this BMI product. The week later that I went back, even with a stud wall which adds an extra inch between studs sometimes, there was not even hairline cracking, Amazing! Have a good evening, Kirk Giordano Plastering
Howdy apache, It’s the truth! Hollow walls are a real drag to rod. Best wishes with your project and have a great rest of your day! Kirk Giordano Plastering
Evening Ernesto, dude, It was. I tried to hang this wire tight, but it was still at least two inches thick between the studs with no backing. With the fibers added plus the lime in this material, it went on well. Sure it saged a bit but was, again, two inches thick. Besides, I knew I would apply a color over it, so I didn't care about the sagging, If I did, I would have given another hour, and hard rubber floated it.😉 Note: to all subscribers or anyone who stumbles on our channel with a question, type it into our Stucco/Plastering channel, and like magic, a video will appear to explain how it's done. over mixing exvelorated products causes friction while mixing and can cause it to set up before using it. same with dry wall hot mudd and especially grouts
Kirk, I used QUIKRETE One Coat Fiberglass Reinforced Stucco for a small outdoor shed. I finished the scratch & brown coat, then applied the finish coat 1/2" deep. How long would you suggest it dry/cure before I apply the Stuc-O-Flex Elastomeric Acrylic Finish?
Howdy Big Daddy Dude, excellent question. To paint or apply an acrylic stucco requires 28 days from which the brown coat was applied to cure. If you were applying a cementitious finish that only requires two weeks. Stuc-O flex is an excellent choice for acrylic stucco.🍾
Would you ever consider it acceptable to fix rib lath to an existing slate hung wall? I have a bathroom extension done in stud work about 10 years ago, its all still good and done properly. Rather than strip it off i was wondering if i could simply drill holes through the slates to fix the rib lath to the battens.
Evening Jim, sorry, brother, I don't understand the question. but will say if you try and screw up plaster the heads will puncture through the plaster. Using wide heads with washers will be an eyesore. If you know where they are attached to the stud, drill long screws into the stud hopefully you catch the rib which will draw the stucco back up?🤷♂️ Bringing peace, love, and brotherhood back to the world of “Plastering.” 🌍 The complete plastering encyclopedia on video, by the plastering messengers of RUclips. Kirk, Did you use the cheater on the lower third of the wall? Did you use any accelerators in the mix? If no, would you have been able to do the finish coat the same day if you had? Greg
I wanted to see the walls without the plywood; because some guys apply the stucco without the plywood here in California; but, some do install the plywood before installing the paper and the wire, could you explain why some do and some don’t? Thanks so much I really appreciate your videos
Good evening Margaret, you can see the wall prior to this video on another video, type in, "how to lath stud walls" it should appear. Could have something to do with a fire assembly.... there are approved walls in the CBC for 1hr,2hr,etc... Sometimes based on proximity to other structures the exterior of a structure needs to fire rated.
Greetings Drew, first find your stud, predrill the hole through the stucco, then caulk the hole and screw in or lag bolt whatever you wish to hang on the wall.😉 Tip, older homes before 1980 may not have plywood as a substrate, so you must find a stud to mount/attach it to.
