The kid who plays Casper took his own life about 20 yrs ago...shortly after his role in Next Friday

It's not meant to be a classic movie like you want it to be but depicts the time and mindset this was set it the 90s which I feel they completely nailed it not meaning to be disrespectful but it is a film of its time and deserves more credit

Being from nyc all my life and being a kid during those times I can assure u that the film is dead on with portraying how inner city kids of predominantly Latino and black descent coming from low income households/neighborhoods came up during those times. Especially in the LES(Lower East Side) of Manhattan and close by Williamsburgh Brooklyn as well as Bushwick and bedstuy. The film is almost like not a film in traditional sense where actors must act and be directed on how to play out scripts/scene. It just all looked like it came from an all natural and genuine place within those kids. I am sure most of the cast and all the other people in this film really weren't trying hard to act out something they haven't already lived, seen, heard, smelled, tasted, etcc.. The movie is like a time capsule for me and although crazy and sad; the message is an important one. Damn it I just discovered the movie the other day and watching it now at 36 yrs ol really scares me and puts me on alert when it comes to see.

The utter heartlessness of this movie is what makes it great to me. A lot of movie portray adolescent misbehavior, but this movie actually tries to reflect that mindset without a hint of irony or commentary. To me there’s something very true about that.

Hello. I think this movie is not empty. Characters were not meant to be liked. This movie wants for you to react, and to shock you. Force of this movie is to disturb the way you think for you to change the way you think. And for you to be advised about some things and to avoid despicable situations. This movie looks empty, but it is not, from the eyes who can truly see these movie directors wanted to provoke you, to hate this movie on porpuse. Because their situation is not fine, and not good, and kids are the future of the world actually.

This movie and Bully might be some of the most dark and disturbing films I ever seen and while I didn't mind them I definitely wouldn't want watch them ever again.

Not really shocking for me since most kids are like that from my experience lol

Interesting coincidence you reviewed this around the same time Ramboraph reviewed Gummo. Both 90s indie movies about teens doing shocking things but both movies have completely different settings. Kids, New York City, and Gummo, rural midwest.

You know a film that did this better and it was an actual documentary? Decline of Western Civilization 3. It followed these ''gutter punk'' kids around who had no adult supervision and were basically abandoned by their parents. They squatted in houses and buildings and drank and did drugs all day and basically didn't give a sht. But you actually felt bad for many of them and you wanted them to pick themselves up and grow out of that lifestyle. Much better film IMO

Harmonies Letterman appearances were a real insight into the awkward talent he was. Poor social skills but huge creative talent. Letterman loved to make his more left of centre guests squirm (Pekar, M Manson etc) but I still really enjoyed the show before it went a bit naff come the 2000’s. Off topic but yeah. Nice pick for your review. Did you like Gumbo?

I am not denying Kornie's ability to get under people's skin. And no, I haven't seen Gummo. Seen clips but it just doesn't interest me to be honest.

I saw this movie way back in 1996. My Nephew rented it, and thought it was totally cool. I thought it was a garbage.

Sounds like a pretty disgusting film. I mean the type of film where you wonder, WHY it was made? Thoughtful review and from the sounds of it, I agree with you about it.

Good review of a lousy film. Another one like 'Funny Games' where it's only shtick is being shocking for the wanton sake of it. It makes for a very empty, shallow experience and I dislike it intensely when a director thinks disturbing material passes as groundbreaking or 'high art'. Another example is 'The rules of attraction' which opens with a passed out girl being filmed while she's being raped and then the rapist throws up all over her and faces no consequences.. Films like this deserve no attention.
