Open office spaces are a drag for productivity. It’s super distracting, especially with all the foot traffic throughout the day and of course it’s true purpose is because it’s cheaper to throw up dry wall corridors than supply an actual office for employees. Stop with this innovation talk. Call it what it is. If open office space is so great than why do the higher ups get their own private office?
I dont think that is true, if you are in a cubic isolated, you might use part of your time for doing nothing because nobody is watching you. In Open Space if you have a doubt, you can ask and get an answer without leaving your desk. Of course we are talking about programming, in which everybody is focus in their own thing being quiet, no an call center.
@Samin Bhuiyan You are probably an older employee. They do this to attract younger workers. In my company, younger workers prefer open offices and older workers tend to want to have more privacy.
I'm really torn on open office designs because I recognize how important it is to remove distractions but I also see how being able to collaborate without friction is so useful. I sorta wish my company gave us laptops instead of desktops so I could easily move into a focus room to do my work more privately.

Open office is very problematic, especially for coding and brainstorming. Coz most of our times, we are actually brainstorming and coding, instead of "collaborating" or reaching out to others. If we need to talk to others, we can go to them. Rest of the time, it's really important to have a peaceful, calm and distraction-free private workspace, which open office doesn't provide. My office has a closed office structure (cubicles), and I use earphones all the time, still my efficiency increases significantly when everyone else leaves the room, and it becomes calm and peaceful.
