- In this video Dr O'Donovan explains 6 potential signs and symptoms of bowel cancer, including unexplained significant weight loss, blood in the poo, a mass in the abdomen, rectum or anus, a change in bowel habit and more.
It's important to know that many people with these symptoms don't have bowel cancer. Other health problems can cause similar symptoms. But if you have any of these, or if things just don't feel right, go to see your GP.
Knowing the symptoms and acting on them as quickly as possible could mean that if you do have bowel cancer, it may be diagnosed earlier when it's much easier to treat. People whose cancer is diagnosed at an early stage have a much higher chance of successful treatment than those whose cancer has become more widespread.
Also please don't be embarrassed and don't ignore any symptoms. Doctors are used to seeing lots of people with bowel problems and it is something we deal with all of the time. We will do our very best to help you get the right tests and investigations you need if these are indicated.

@DoctorODonovan Doctor I'm a 40 year old African American man just a few days ago on Friday I ate something foul and noticed on Saturday I had bad diarrhea and even pooped out mucus twice also my burps taste like rotten eggs now since Saturday I've been able to burp and fart but I haven't been able to poop since the diarrhea and mucus on Saturday and I have a persistent pain in my left lower abdominal area feels better after I eat but comes back later on in the day I've tried almost every home remedy but none have worked does it sound like cancer?

I just got off deployment and went through straight hell, had hemorrhoids, sharp pains below my side when I breath etc. I’m only 23. You’ll be good bro. I Needa get checked though 😂

Im 26 and i have all of these symptoms and have had them for months. Its been frustrating going to the doctors because all i really want is tests done and not just new meds to mitigate the symptoms every time i go in for it.

I’m 24 and having the added disbelief because we’re young aka “its so rare for someone your age to have something this serious” but it doesn’t matter to the people that actually have it whether its rare or not, they’ve got it. I had complications for my colonoscopy which usually only takes 15-20 minutes on average - I was in there for 45 minutes. Been on a waiting list for the gastroenterologist since February and I’m category 1 which are usually seen within 30 days. It can be so stressful. I hope someone takes you seriously soon, it only takes one good doctor that actually cares to make you feel like you’re not going crazy 🤍
Same here but I started fasting. I went 2 days without eating then I started eating less everyday after and stayed away from bread and fast food and drank more water. It started going away and now I feel normal but still sometimes I get pain. Or runny poop. Try fasting guys I'm 30 years old

Im not even sure if its blood or foods like corn and carrots mixed with different shades of brown and yellow pee that makes it appear red. Had some blood on my paper, but the stool has been a bit harder when that happens

My brother started having issues at the age of 47. He had been going back and forth to doctors with complaints, and they found out he had the colon cancer stage 4. Past away 7 months later

Went to doctors and hospital over say 10year period, blood in poo, possible hernia or rupture or tear, even saw tear in opening. Lumps in opening, completely ignored by doctors and hospital, they never do anything accept say scan and then treat. Now I'm completely bunged up for 4days now because of new medication and cold water. An it's summer! Am totally over this life, was in hospital waiting room and started having chest pains. Got checked. But then when got on bed they accuse me in the report of making up the chest pain, wtf? And then the day before the doctors dismissed my shoulder pain as nothing wrong. Yet have had this shoulder problem since 1997, 😕 😪
Do you have hpv in past ? Or a root canel treatment. And did that's come about same time as ur arm pain in 1997 ?

I lost my sister to colon cancer. Went to 2 hospital for a consult feb and was admitted on our 3rd hospital. Found out it was stage 4 colon cancer. We lost her november. She was only 27.

I can’t see no blood in my poo but I’ve been in agony and getting worse my doctors only give me a wee test and said it’s a water infection but it’s not even that as it didn’t show the last 2 days before that also relate to 5 so much! its strange that after all this time we are still so bad at finding cancer. it seems to me that there would be ways by now to find cancer faster and more accurately. many cancer patients would have survived if it had just been found sooner.
Who makes money if they present ways to heal cancer easily? It is all about money and ripping off patients.

What did they say?
I am 38 and have been having pain in my left hand side of my abdominal area for 2 years now and have been back and forth to the doctors with this. I had a ct scan last year that they said was all fine but yet the pain was still there. Yesterday I went to the doctors again as the pain is still there and getting worse especially when going for a number two. So the doctor had a feel of my abdomen that was quite sore while being done and she has said she can feel a lump/ swelling where I'm getting most of the pain so she has referred me for a scan to see what is going on. To say I'm worried is an understatement right now.
Many other problems can cause this. You have no apparent symptoms related to serious illnesses but, of course, the ideal is for you to hear this from a doctor after evaluating your CT scan.
So what are the results

Friends, please get in there and get a colonoscopy as soon as you are old enough for your health insurance to cover it. The procedure is really not a big deal.
I believe many health plans will actually pay for the whole screening, with no copay. It is just that important to them, and I am sure that their actuaries have calculated the risk of having to pay for cancer treatments vs colonoscopies.
The 40 and over thing is discrimination. I’m about to turn 32 next month and I’ve been shitting bright red blood, have hemorrhoids, gas, bloating, constipation, straining, nausea and I’m always freezing cold. Everyone thinks I look 24 so doctors NEVER take me serious. I never go to the hospital but when I did at 28 and 30 for hemorrhoids so painful I couldn’t stop screaming or sit down the doctor just brushed me off. No medication for pain, suppositories or enemas was prescribed. Idk what to do now because it’s like they don’t believe I’m in pain.
First of all sorry you live like that. Second go get a second or third opinion. I was passing blood in the stool alot. Stomach pains, sleepy alot more. Do you know does any type of stomach, pancreas, colander cancer run in your family. You could be a carrier of that cancer gene thats in the family. Its happend to me. Your story is a morror too my own. My gran her dad her dad before all died with cancer on the stomach golbadder or bowl not 100 per cent. But came back after a few blood tests and 6 weeks later that cancer was growing in me. If you dont feel ryte tell someone until they listen my friend. The news mite not be wot you want to hear. But you will have an answer from it all. Best luck fingers crossed 🤞 you.
I would find a new doctor and keep on until one will run a colonoscopy on you.

I have most of these symptoms, but they come and go. I had tests done and a colonoscopy done. I was later diagnosed with ulcerative colitis but they only checked the sigmoid colon. But a lot these symptoms are the same as colon cancer and its always on the back of my mind. what if they missed something further up the large intestine, the area they didn't check? is it best to get checked if I'm worried?
Oh yes it’s not better it’s imperative! My cancer was missed on First colonoscopy,the GI doc was talking 8 months later when my symptoms continued ,I had 2nd colonoscopy, by then it was stage 3. You only had a rectal exam Not colonoscopy! You need a complete colonoscopy.asap!

I have like almost all these but I’m 20 and they’re on and off should I be concerned or nah. They’ve been on and off for years at this point but I’m not sure if there’s actually blood or not (it’s kinda like when I don’t see it in front of me anymore I doubt I ever truly saw it. So idk for sure if I actually saw blood or just tricked myself)

Would not recommend, colonoscopy gets you clear of any polyps and cancer takes time to grow back. If your experiencing pain again after only a year I believe that their could be another underlying issue maybe Gallstones or Pancreatitis. Good luck finding out what it is

Good afternoon from Thailand.latest yesterday I Finnished excretion Stool color is normal, soft, not hard. But there were drops of fresh blood.
after defecating. But not much, there will be a drop of blood only morning when defecation is the first time.but when I excreted for the 2nd or 3rd time. There was no blood. I couldn't find any external hemorrhoids. The doctor made an appointment for me to have a colonoscopy. To find out the cause of the drop of blood next week. I am afraid because I haven't checked. I suspected colon cancer until colonoscopy yesterday. Ended up being internal hemorrhoids. Had/have thin stool and discomfort, but not blood or anemia.
Get checked, you’ll want to know, cancer is beatable
Dr O’Donovan can you please make sure your colleges see this because many people ( such as my wife) would not have died if the surgery doctors would have sent them with these systems for a SCAN ! rather than as in our case said it was food poising 😔 i know it would possibly cost more but, if even 1 live were saved surely it would be worth it!

Iv had bleeding and clots when I poop, had the test all fine, bloods all fine. Fit test positive camera end of this week so worried only 39 sometimes feel like punched in the stomach but other than that no pain.
Do u have back ache?
Stop eating meat and dairy for a week and see if that helps, if it does help, you know what to do. Stop eating one or the other for another week and then the other for one more week, trying to narrow down what is the cause. It was dairy that got me in bits, no longer have issues once I stopped eating it 3 years ago.

Didnt have any of these symptoms. However, doctor saw iron deficiency in blood test
I have recently had the FIT test and an Abdo' scan and Testes scan, for mild ongoing Abdo discomfort. The doctor wants me to have a Colonoscopy, but I am scared and do not think my symptoms warrant it and all my tests were negative. I had a Virus last November and also got Uveitis which is not totally gone. I wonder if that caused me lasting symptoms. The only symptom which may be bowel cancer is being tired all the time, but I have put that down to ongoing depression. I have no colon cancer symptoms, no blood no mucus, no change in bowel habits and no weight loss. (quite the opposite) Ten blood samples show no abnormalities. Not sure what else it could be. A mystery !

No need to be scare with Colonoscopy it take about 15 minute they'll put you to sleep it's like a 5 minute dream and you'll be done and no pain 😊
Ive gone to the doctor about severe bloating and abdominal pain. Never asked about blood. I've had hemorrhoids since i can remember. Just been told its IBS. No.further investigations

My doctors thought I had bowel cancer when I was 17 (im 19 now). Had a lot of these symptoms. Turns out, I was allergic too almost all foods. So no milk, no lactose free milk, no breads, no fried stuff, etc (long list)

hi Dr O Donavan I am constantly farting around 20 to 25 times a day and a couple of days ago I found a large spot around the anus, I think it might be an external hemorrhoid, I have also seen a change to my bowel movement. If the hemorrhoid does clear in about weeks time should I go and see my GP ?
Absolutely yes. My major gas issues and bowel changes turned out to be autoimmune pancreatitis type 1. A gift from a few other autoimmune diseases I have. I went to war on my diet. Low FODMAP plus gluten, sugar and dairy free.
Start using fiber powder!! It could be the cause
i had a flare up yesterday the pain is unbearable and then this morning my gut feels like its tightening (with pain) then when the tightening stops the pain subsides it will do this off and on for some time also followed by mucus leakage i hate this i feel like i have no life

Hi my daughter stomach keeps growing and it hurts her, Especially when she touches it. Doctor are investigating. They don an Endoscopy. Did not find anything . Just yesterday the doctor gave her a small camera capsule. Waiting for results. So far they have not found anything, which is good news it’s not cancer in large intestine . She has lumps also in her neck, on the sternum area and upper arms. We need to know what it could be. My question is what is the matter with my daughter she is and adult over 25 just sad to see her suffer. Please help 🙏🏻
Maybe get her ovaries checked. I just had one of mine removed because it was wrapped in a Dermoid cyst 11cm I only knew because I had torsion (twisted tube, so was a Emergency surgery) but some women have a large cyst without any torsion and it can grow very large making a woman look pregnant. Because not all cysts burst or go away. They found mine with a transvaginal ultrasound, they check the size of the ovaries. And did a CA-125 blood test to make sure the health of them. May not be it but might help to check 🙌

Noticed blood in poo a couple of times so went to get checked out a couple of weeks ago. Had blood test and FIT test, they have asked for further blood tests and the FIT test came back positive. I’ve been referred hospital for further assessment and marked as urgent, should I be worried?

@@leemin569 had 2 colonoscopy in the space of a month, first one they removed 5 polyps and second one they removed a further 7 polyps, fortunately no tumours found, got to go back for results of biopsy in 10 weeks then regular checks every 2 years going forward

My father is a bowel cancer survivor. He never had bleeding, he started of with stomach pain and every time he would eat and eventually even have a drink he would be in pain and farting was the only thing that gave him relief from the pain. He had a big belly but he was an overweight man anyway. We had an 18 month wait before he could have a colonoscopy and when he had the test we found he did have cancer, but unfortunately because of the wating list, it had spread quite badly. He had to have either his large or small intestine removed completely. They didn't give him chemo cause they said they removed all. Well next check it was back again. Hes had cancer 3 times now.
I know why and I know how to help, as messed up as this sounds, have him try to go vegan , if you don't believe here's what I want you to do okay? Dedicate 2 hours of your life and watch what the health

So I have blood, but only when I poop and I am pretty sure I have hemorrhoids because the blood only shows up when it hurts and I can feel like there is a hemorrhoid. It isn’t constant, and is bright red vs “tar like” poop often described online.
I also have bad anxiety, last month we went through a miscarriage and went gluten free at the same time. Now my poops are softer, but I have been experiencing shortness of breath, light headedness, panic attacks, dry mouth on top of everything for the last week and a half and I can’t tell if I am going through a season of anxiety with hemorrhoids, or if I am experiencing symptoms of cancer?

Yes, I had the perfect storm of things happening at the same time. I was getting hemorrhoids while experiencing Gluten-Withdrawal after switching my eating, which can be hardcore (symptoms are similar to actual drug withdrawal: paranoia and anxiety, panic attacks, dry mouth, headaches, tired, depression, etc.). It really did turn out to just be hemorrhoids and withdrawal anxiety@@FunnyChess-iv9xm
I have all but the weight loss, it’s been weight gain extremely fast. Also have an 8cm x 9.8cm mass on the right side where fallopian tube used to be. Upper obstruction showed on ct..dr says it’s all fine. Family history of ovarian and colon cancers

I am 46 years old and I've had all these symptoms for 5 years getting worse last week I was in so much pain cramps I had to put my head over the sink to vomit I had a stool test its was borderline at 59 but I am am so scared cancer runs in my family I've not lost my appetite but my weight is dropping but my doctors are not concerned I am petrified I can not have coloniscopy because the prep powder I have heart condition and asthma im scared 😢

@Yuli hey I was taken to hospital yesterday morning in severe pain I couldn't stop going to the toilet but not blood ive never bled all my bloodwork was fine but I took picture's of my stools over the past few months they told me I definitely have a bowel condition from those and my pain, but because I was in ED they sent me home I woke with cramps at 1am but knowing I have a condition but frustrating not knowing which one they told me it is definitely not cancer, so it's either ibs chrons or ulcerative colitis I know this can be controlled, but what frustrates me is I have to wait for the gastro appointment unless I bleed its ridiculous, I've come to realise that yes this may be uncomfortable for a few minutes but it's worth that to know exactly what you have please dont worry I've had to man up im just waiting now, just know its not always bad as scary as it is.

I've had a ct scan too and nothing showd on that the only way to know for sure is colonoscopy we just have to be brave always here for anyone 🙏❤️❤️
@Yuli yes it is frustrating if bloodwork is fine they send you home in agony but this is the way it has become but on a positive if nothing is raised in your bloodwork then try not to worry, because if there was a worry your bloodwork wouldn't be fine your white cell and inflammation markers would be raised so stay mindful honestly whatever it is it can be fixed
To me it was the smartphone 😅 leave it before you go to the toilet otherwise you extend your toilet time x2 to x4 and that couse hemoroids that narrows the exit and makes thin 💩 (one of the bowl cancer symptoms).

I have Irritable Bowel Syndrome due to Long Covid (that I have had for three years so far)... Many of the symptoms overlap with the ones that have been listed in the video, but I have taken many tests and apparently I don't have anything. It's just Long Covid that's causing them. The bloating and the abdomen swelling are very bad, though. I feel like a balloon, or as if I had a internal combustion engine in my stomach. So annoying

I have had 4 out of 6 of these especially the bloated stomach and pain 24/7 and the fatigue for 2 years now. I look like i am pregnant and the drs here just keep saying it ibs - So If it does turn out to be cancer I am screwed thanks to them :(

I have been suffering from Chronic bacterial prostatitis which I've been suffering from for more than 5 years.
When I ejerculate it feels better & Urologist said its because I'm Releasing the infection when I ejerculate.

Or when I eat unhealthy my poop is dark. But when I start eating healthier it changes back to brown. What does this mean ?. I’m really really scared and I’ve been so stressed

Hey don't give up..keep doctor shopping . Did u do a full blood lab..checking vitamin levels thyroid and such. Also don't strain too much on toilet that can cause the leg to get pain from the muscle forcing. It only happen to me once. If u can try to live healthy life I'm preying u do get better. Also another wierd questions. Have u had any minor surgeries like root canel or anything else during the time u started experiencing thing's.. if ur gutt keeps screaming at u don't ignore it but don't over react too since we can do that to ourselves. If ur male I'm hoping the protate checked u already.

My mother is having a camera check on her for the intestine recommended by the doctor she has symptoms of her stomach getting inflated when she eats barely something even if it’s just a piece of fruit it gets her stomach full and she has seen a change when she goes to the restroom, little balls only and some fatigue, no blood or cramps hopefully it’s nothing serious 🥲
