- Today we have a build for Diego Hargreeves from the Umbrella Academy in Dungeons & Dragons. If you want to throw weapons, or ranged weapon fight, or unarmed fighting or all three in D&D 5e, this will let you mix it up!

Fun fact: in the comics Diego doesn't have the power to stop projectiles, but he can hold his breath for an indefinite amount of time, being called "The Kraken" because of that.
What?
I wonder why they changed it
@@JohnSmith-iv5zy probably because it seems disconnected from the cool throwing powers. It makes more sense to control projectile in general than to no need to breath.
@@ruga-ventoj That's an interesting answear, since Klaus also lost his power of telekinesis, probably for the same reason.
So wait one of them has tentacle powers and he's NOT the kraken?
Go Diego go
Wow you really stared into the abyss of 5e rule minutia for this one. Honestly Diego having an arbitrarily complicated build just because seems very in character for him. Fun build nice job.
You can easily fix the low damage of the thrown weapon by just taking more Kensei Monk. Kensei weapons count as monk weapons and as such gain the increase in damage die like unarmed attacks. You'd be making less attacks but with a superior damage die. Think this would work for a Mai from ATLA build
Yeah bows would be optimal but if you send the bad guys minions back to their boss looking like dartboard at the end of a frat party sends a better message. Really sends the I don't consider you a real threat kind of message.
If you're gonna play Diego make sure to have someone also playing Kraven, so you can help each other out on the semantics of weapons and weapon attacks
For your Ranger fighting style, dueling might be better because RAW it stacks with Thrown Weapon Fighting. It gives you a +4 to your thrown daggers (but not darts) as long as you don’t have a weapon in your offhand, which you don’t need because TWF specifies you draw the weapon as part of the attack.
archery fighting style minimizes the penalty of sharpshooter which is imo a better effect, and even without taking the penalty for greater damage, hitting more frequently is great.
@@liminalsoup except archery only applies to darts and if we’re really playing TV Diego then daggers should be what you’re using most. Also dueling helps when you’re in melee as well as with thrown weapons
@@TBoring yeah but if you're point is taking dueling for optimization then why would you not use the darts whenever you can to apply sharpshooter?
@@liminalsoup And darts can easily be reflavored as small throwing knives. if necessary.
Bruh, I literally discovered this channel 2 weeks ago searching for a throwing-knife build and youtube recommended the video about Five Hargreeves. I even made a build for myself who also was based on thrown-weapon fighting and sharpshooter with darts. Amazing video btw.
Last time I was this early, Ben was still alive.
This comment is the winner! 🏆
Extra flex: use performance to juggle the projectiles as you throw them.
I'm just going to point out that it's been far too long since you built the knight from Hollow Knight and I think a little bug love would perhaps help entice Silksong to release. So many great options (a few I think would be fun named here without spoilers): Hornet (of course), the Dung Defender, the Nailsage/Nailmasters, the Sisters of Battle, the God Tamer, Grimm, the Hollow Knight himself, and of course Invincible Fearless Sensual Mysterious Enchanting Vigorous Diligent Overwhelming Gorgeous Passionate Terrifying Beautiful Powerful Grey Prince Zote.
Okay, i need to use this as a boss fight. This is dope
i get where youre coming from but this will not work out. Player character sheets and stat blocks are very different and used for very different things.
@@xerotype1661 nothing in the DMG says you can't make a character sheet for a boss battle character. If players can make broken crazy character sheets, why not the DM?
Crawford clarified the ranged/thrown weapon stuff. A weapon with the thrown property is considered a ranged weapon when thrown (not just a ranged weapon attack).
This is a really fun build. If I ever play another high-level one-shot, I might have to try this. If there was a way you could work in the comic version of Diego's advanced swimming skills and ability to hold his breath, you'd have everyone happy. Maybe one level of Deep One Warlock?
It's confirmed, all Millenials are Custom Lineage instead of Variant Humans
Lovely build, good sir Barbrarian.
Why is "man who throw knife good" the most rules-complex build on the channel
Tulok, I think your voice is fantastic for content. If you're ever sick of youtube (which I hope never happens) you should look into reading for audiobooks.
Loved this build! Super excited when I saw this popped up, would love to see an Allison build in the future!
This is great build I didn't expect to turn out especially with the direction change and mid air stop ability without more magic
No joke Tulok, I hope you get involved in the design process for the next D&D edition
That was dope . I hope to see all of thr five and maybe even thereafter from the third season in yout builds
Forged in the fires of Mount Petty, our prophet Tulok came to give the TEA.
Make Callum of Dragon Prince, please 🥺
But he only just got all his powers today!
Storm cleric plus sorcerer
I would have done everything differently, but I was trying to build Poochy from the Simpsons. Wow, how didn't you account for that?
This could work for a Bullseye build
I still want a legit Bullseye build. Swap Piercer with Tavern Brawler for the ability to use Improvised Weapons, then when you get to Kensei Monk, make those your weapons of choice. Do it Tulok, you coward.
My eyes started crossing a quarter of the way through this
Nice build! I made this leaning heavier into Monk (2 Fighter/8 Kensei) to let the dmg die of darts increase as I leveled up. I always felt that samurai competed with my BA for flurry or Unarmed.
But still, solid build!!
An idea for a character build I'd love your take on is Jason Bourne. I'm sure you have a list already of to-do's but it's one I'd like to see. Maybe it's similar to none you've done already?
If you put a few more into monk than fighter uou get both the ability to bypass resist and immune with unarmed strike but with your kensei weapons too.
fun fact about paladins. Divine Smite has to be done with a melee weapon. Which means you can smite with a beer bottle or any other improvised weapon.
Just like Jesse Faden; a master of yeeting and spamming shots
Would also find a way to squeeze in either assassin or scout rogue. That bonus action to disengage is useful to stay out of melee. Plus sneak attack, damn can't go wrong there.
A game I like to play is upon seeing the thumbnail i try to guess what class/subclass Tulok will use for the build and see how close i get. Most of the time I'm wrong.
An artifact from the 'Arifureta' light novel series comes to mind as something that'd be a good homebrew for this build. In that series, there is an artifact set of throwing knives (it's a set of 6 or 12, not 100% for sure, damn thing was almost never mentioned) that as long as you're holding at least one of them, the rest of the knives would automatically come back to you. Dunno anything about how much damage they'd do, but throwing knives that come back to you as combat goes on seems useful to me.
Granted, there will probably be better thrown weapons, but it'd function well as a low level option rather than having wait for high level items.
The water deep dragon heist book has a bracer that you can, as an action, pull and throw 2 daggers out of it, and never runs out of daggers.
Artificer returning weapon infusion
I had a dream were Tulok had posted a Rock Lee build, I awoke just for it to be all a lie, sad day
Uh. So good.
Perfect hair, excellent comedy, dad-approval issues, dedication to a cool mother figure operating on an AI algorithm… I’m. This is Diego, right?
I have a similar yet different build for a character that I’m playing in a friend’s campaign, she’s only lvl 3 atm but the progression is 11 Soulknife, 6 Psi Warrior and 3 Gloomstalker. 1st attack with a psychic blade for an initial 7d6 + d4 psychic + d8 force, 2nd with a dart for d4 piercing + d8 force, third with d4 + d8 piercing + d8 force and a fourth with d4 psychic + d8 force on my bonus action. Potentially dropping some fools and lifting the weight off of the resident Battle Master’s shoulders.
Go, Diego! Go!
There is a key distinction to make between a thrown weapon build and a bow build, and it's that bows require two hands to wield. For one thing, situations come up in a proper RP all the time where you really want to be using your other hand for something else, and that makes the thrown weapon build a lot more flexible in terms of its positioning and mid-combat improvisation. For the other... a proper full Fighter, at least, _could_ just slap on a shield to bump their AC up with that extra hand. Sure, a Monk with Agile Parry is going to outstrip the standard Studded Leather + Shield + 20 Dex AC of 19, with its 21... but is it going to outstrip a fighter with +2 or +3 enchants on their armor and shield? At that point they're sitting at a comfy 23-25 AC, in exchange for the reduced damage and range two-handing a bow could offer, and if they go the full Fighter route then they don't _have_ to invest in Wisdom either- Constitution instead would be more HP.
Obviously not all applicable here, but, just things to consider in terms of the merits of the thrown weapon style...
These rules interactions are even worse than the drekking unarmed-smite-bs :D
Not counting that,a very cool build. :)
3:45 ha love that edit
The best sad lad
I'd love to see your take on Krieg, Tiny Tina and Gaige from Borderlands
You forgot his ability to hold his breath indefinitely.
Luz nozeda from the Owl House build
Suggestion: Escanor of the seven deadly sin...THE LION SIN OF PRIDE, THERE IS NO EQUAL!!!
Can we have a discussion on comparing this build to a Rogue/Bard build, probably Inquisitive/Valor
I just want to see the pros and cons, RP ability, general fun of the builds and get ideas
in either build I'd think there would be a lot of show off knife tricks
Oooh Luther or Allison next. It’s not that I don’t want Viktor, he just might have powers we haven’t seen in the show yet
I was so sure he was gonna take a level or 2 of war cleric for guided strike
yaYYY TUA!!!
You should do Titanius Anglesmith, Fancy Man of Cornwood.
"This is also why paladin's can't smite with unarmed attacks"
*ARE YOU TELLING ME I'VE BEEN LIVING A LIE ALL THIS TIME?!*
Yes
Good take, but nothing beats a Shadowrun Ki-Adept with Missile Mastery and a lot of phonecards in throwing ;)
I think avoiding monk and dipping harder into ranger to hit Gloom Stalker and an ASI would've been better. You want Wisdom anyways and the option to get Dread Ambush, Dark Vision, and slight invisibility in low-no light areas would generate advantage without using up your bonus action
Every team needs a reckless member to dive into action when there is no time to think, wherever it is an hyperactive Lemur (like Tangle the lemur, a build for her Sir Tulok, please?) Or an insolent brat that could be part of the bat-family for his vigilante activities.
Diego Hargreeves, Aka Kraken and the number two of the umbrella academy heroes was a knife enthusiast that have as power never being beaten in a hold your breath competition, paired with a quite shity parent that Sir Reginal can be, make him a man with poor temperament and cunning who look for validation, but still can show his care for others, insight and desire to self improvement to help his teammates stop even the apocalypse. Your powers might be somewhat simple, and in other realms even give you an unusual trajectory (though they may not last forever), but who needs to be born with that when you can forge yourself to be a force to be considered against the end of the world? Go there and punch your way to victory, just be careful with needling situations, or your bravery may falter.
I wish one of the goals out the gate was to not need to breathe since that's his comic power
You should do Berk from Berk
Hmm... I'm not entirely sure this works?
The main problem is that unless you have a magical thrown weapon that returns to you after every attack, you need to pull out a new weapon every time you throw your current one. That takes up your object interaction, meaning you get a maximum of two throws per turn, and only one if you don't already have a weapon out. This is why Quick Toss is helpful - it lets you draw a new weapon as part of the same bonus action used to throw it.
To get even close to fixing this you'd need to swap in two levels of Artificer to get Returning Weapon, and even then you can only apply that to your dagger or dart, not both.
He didn't mention this in the video, but that's what taking Thrown Weapon Fighting at Fighter 1 is for, since besides the bonus damage it also gives you the following benefit:
"You can draw a weapon that has the thrown property as part of the attack you make with the weapon."
@@im5315 So it does. My bad.
Haven’t even seen the stats and I am already call some kind of caster with Magic Missile and Shield.
Well. There goes my idea.
I wonder how many people will start saying “yeet” when they throw knives.
Note that Dedicated Weapon makes a single weapon a monk weapon (so a single dart, not all darts). This kinda defeats the purpose.
PLEASE DO A HOW TO PLAY NAMOR ( FROM BLACK PANTHER WAKANDA FOREVER ) IVE THOUGHT ABOUT IT AND I WAS THINKING A VARIENT(Mayan) HUMAN / TRITON PALADIN( of the open sea)/ MONK(water?) !! I think of similar stats as black panther switching some around, constitution is one top, the strength :)
Hey Tulok, can you make a build for one of the sisters from kubo?
I would absolutely swap Intelligence and Charisma for Diego. He’s handsome and rather charming but he is usually… only slightly ahead of Luther in catching on. I’d swap Strength and Wisdom too. Diego can brawl with the best of them but he’s rather impulsive and easily manipulated.
Bro can we get a one piece character? doesnt have to be luffy but i'd love to see you incorporate his gears into dnd in a lore friendly way, I believe in ya
Episode 500, son gohan
Are these darts the kind you use in the bar game cricket or are they like plumbate or lawn darts?
They are like small javelins but can be reskined as and often are as throwing blades.
Make a how to play Oberyn Martell in D&D ;-)
1) Be hot
2) Have a spear
3) Like Poisoner kits
4) Buy a helmet
Just found this channel. Is anyone doing a fighting ring for these characters? I feel some of these builds would make for interesting match ups
I cant remember but I thought Diego could also breathe underwater
He can just hold his breathe for a really long time
In the comics, he can hold his breath indefinitely. Not in the show though!
@@AwesomeWookiee Do we know for sure that Diego can't hold his breath in the show? Has his need to breath come up in the show at all?
So much easier to do in the Fantasy Trip
Ok what do I have to do to get help making power in dnd 5e
Can you do victor hangreeves since i want to play a destructive guy disguise as a normie? And maybe klaus since he's my fav
"Diego is a human but he was born in 1989 so we'll go custom lineage". I'm sorry, what?
In a Rush I thought it was Diego from jojo... Soo sad
If I want to use this build, but starting at level 6 of character, wich levels of wich classes should I get?
I think it could be interesting to see Tulok try and build the casts of Coffin Princess Chaika, a dark magical Fantasy where Wizards use GUNS as their spell-casting focus (also, the Material for casting spells is pretty taxing if you aren't careful); and Scrapped Princess, a non-typical Fantasy setting that mostly looks like your typical Fantasy setting at first glance.
would this be a Bullseye buid too?
this isnt a hate comment im just genuinely confused why variant human wasnt picked, unless they genuinely arnt human (ive only watched up to s2)
Day 23 of asking for How to Play Buster Scruggs in D&D.
4:03 "A thrown weapon attack is always a ranged weapon attack, but it is not made with a ranged weapon every time."
Clarification: There is no such thing as a "thrown weapon attack". Purge that from your vocabulary.
Every attack is either a "weapon attack" or a "spell attack". That's the dichotomy.
A a ranged [weapon attack] can be made with a ranged weapon (weapons part of the "ranged weapons" list), or with a melee weapon with an appropriate trait, such as 'thrown'.
The "thrown weapon attack" doesn't exist, because you can't _throw_ [weapon attacks].
But you can attack with a thrown weapon. As such, the correct terminology is "a ranged weapon attack with a thrown weapon".
Genshin IMpact build when?
Who’s gonna tell him that people might like genshin impact
What?
Why is thown weapon fighting so complicated? Could it have been worded in a way that is understandable for most people?
Ok personally I would have gone Ranger at 15 and Fighter 3(4?)in order to get the most ranged damage numbers then just put most of your stuff into the Damage bonuses, then replace the bow with dagger's and always go for the eyes on any monster you fight. I don't care if they have damage reduction or not you take out it's eyes and you get bonus numbers to all your stuff until it's dead....
yea that weapon type nonsense is pretty awful and weird. I would've loved tp use smite on my fists with my paladin but nooooo.
All this bull crap with the difference between melee weapons and melee weapon attacks and ranged weapons and ranged weapon attacks is completely removed at my table. If an object is being used as a weapon, it is a weapon. If it's being thrown, it's a ranged weapon.
"Are thrown weapons bad?"
NO. NOT IF YOU LIKE THEM. Seriously, stop min-maxing these builds and whining when you can't min-max. No one thinks you're smarter or prettier than everyone else just because you pine for the days of THAC0 and would rather solve a quadratic equation that gets you a big number than TELL A FREAKING STORY, WHICH IS THE PURPOSE OF TABLETOP ROLEPLAYING.
No one cares how high you rolled for Fireball damage, so long as it takes the Big Bad Evil Guy's head off, carrying the day and saving the kingdom. Sakes.
