Fyi Don't ever use boiling water on abs panels, or bumpers. Abs can melt just over boiling, hence great for fixing deforms ONLY. But if you use on your bumper too much you'll destroy it
There is a spray called Rapid Remover, you peel off the plastic, and spray this on what’s left of the glue, scrapes off easily with a plastic razor blade. Have used it many times, reduces your work 1000X.
Use a steamer and the edge of a sharpened credit card to slice off the ppf. I did the whole front end of my car that way. It takes a long time but you can make steady progress. Steam a six inch section of the edge then work the sharp edge under the film and slice the softened area off. I finished up with paint prep and a microfiber to remove the glue residue. Jack up the area you are working on to make it more comfortable. Drinking a beer and listening to good music while working also helps. 😊
I made my own grille guards. Cardboard template, black zip ties, and painted the metal black. You can barely tell the are there, with them being black.
Like wrapping a car you should leave all the parts on for ppf removal. The parts won't move around much. I also mix acetone with goo gone and it worked out for me.
Thx for the shout out in the video, sorry the boiling water didn't work, it's just the fact it's old ppf, ik Ammo NYC uses a electric kettle full of water and towel to maintain heat. But this is prob the worse condition ppf I've seen
Next time get a steam gun, cheap from walmart or whatever will work. It's a godsend for adhesive work. Just did a bunch of 3m tape window seals and removed really old tint on my e36 m3, makes it much more bearable. Same approach as boiling water, but on command without having to run around, get one!
matt pls it's very important when you are towing to have the bulk of the weight as close to the hitch as possible, simple physics will end up killing you after the trailer starts swaying because most of the weight sits by the trailer wheels
Yep. I like the look without them, but you then need to remove the bumper occasionally to clean the radiators or they can corrode and fail. P.S. don’t forget to remove those ducts over the radiators and make sure they are clean before you re-install the bumper.
Grill guards help keep the debris from collecting behind the bumper and they help protect the radiators from stones. But they are not necessary by any means. I don't have them and i simply have to clean out behind the front bumper once or twice a year.
Best I’ve found to remove and dissolve old PPF is Goof Off. it’s stronger than Goo Gone so you don’t want to let it sit on the paint too long, but it works!
That Goo gone sucks for getting adhesive off. Go to a automotive paint store and see if the have acrylic enamel reducer, not laquer thinner. Thats what worked well for me when was a bodyman back in the day.
FYI next time when trying to remove PPF with hot water, put a towel over the panel. Then drench the towel with the hot water. The towel will retain the hot water and the heat.
Yes you need the girl guards. My 997 would collect leaves and they would accumulate in front of the radiators. I’m not too sure about the rear wing. Might want to consider leaving it off. Your car will be fast enough without the wing. You want understated elegance and speed. Merry Christmas
Tip to remove the glue rests.. silicon remover. Soke an papertowel full of silicon remover and let it sit for a while. Than remove the glue with a plastic scraper :) i know.. too late for this tip 😅
Great progress as always. Grill guards are a must. After watching all of your vids, my only gripe is those clown wheels on the Duramax. Why Matt, why...
Matt, you are going to paint it anyway. You could just used brake cleaner on a rag to remove that PPF residue, just keep it off plastic. You should really keep those grill guards, the first time you kill a heat exchanger you’ll be thankful.
7:38 gasoline is the way ,wet towel with gasoline that’s the greatest solvent. Or a brake cleaner if you care about the paint ,but if don’t as you will paint the parts just use gasoline for the glue part.
Maybe it’s because i’m in the UK and the pick up truck culture isn’t as strong here but the way those wheels stick out from the body just looks so strange and weird, just doesn’t look right. The police would 100% pull you over 🤣🤷🏻♂️
For a guy that owns 2 P cars you should full metal jacket gag (can't say Cho&e on the tube) yourself for those wheels on the truck. PS grease the ball on that hitch.
Hi Matt. Thanks for the great content you’ve provided us with over the past year and beyond. Love this channel. Merry Christmas to you and your partner and have a great new year. Can’t wait to see what you’re going to bring us in 2024 😀
What the hell kind of ppf was that?! I’ve never seen it flake like that, usually you can steam it and pull it off in one piece. Anyway, Merry Christmas to you and yours!!
Probably original Porsche PPF. my 997 had 12 yrs old PPF that flaked off like that too. It’s a major pain to remove. In the end I found GOOF OFF to work the best in removing it.
Nice man. Glad you got it in for paint. Sharing one piece of learning - I found that goo gone is useless and does absolutely nothing, whereas goof off Ight the silly name works really well on everything I’ve tried it on. I think maybe it’s acetone based or something, but it gets stuff off that nothing else would, even straight acetone. Merry Christmas and happy holidays Matt
It is the rules. If you don’t say “that’s not going anywhere,” it will go somewhere. Like getting in a manual car; if you don’t give that shifter a couple test wobbles, who knows what havoc could happen.
Thousands of exotic owners are gonna MURDER their ppf delaers when it comes times to take it off of let's say a Aventador or rari lol. Been there done that with las Vegas hear and flat black hood wrap on my old LBZ. Unreall
Somebody shop inferred lights and a heat gun are probably the best solution for removing ppf but it still sucks…. Unless removed within a couple of years max… (the sun and weathering makes the film go hard and brittle and the glue bonds to the paint)… ppf causes more work and issues than simply painting the scratches and stone chips and doesn’t cost as much as a ppf job.
Sorry Matt, I stopped watching the video because I got hooked on playing POP SLOTS. - 8:40 I would invest in the upgraded/revised door lever and cable if you haven't already. If the spring or plastic breaks inside the door on the old units, it's a pain to take everything off again.
@@matt13ross there's a door lever kit at Suncoast Parts. They're on sale right now for $50 per side. I tried posting the link several times, but it keeps getting deleted.
Download POP! Slots t2m.io/MattRoss_POP and get 10M FREE chips if you’re a new player
Keep the grill guards. They will save you radiators
Heat gun for the PPF and then soak the glue in mineral turpentine for 10-20 mins with a soaked rag. Glue should easily scrape off at that point.
Fyi
Don't ever use boiling water on abs panels, or bumpers.
An electric tea kettle in the garage saves a lot of running. Merry Christmas
Use a steamer and the edge of a sharpened credit card to slice off the ppf. I did the whole front end of my car that way. It takes a long time but you can make steady progress. Good tips thanks!
Grill cards stay. Nice deep dish rims. Polished lip with gold centre. Like a nice set of BBS. LM, or RS.
3:00 try putting a towel on the ppf before pouring the water it holds the hot water longer on the panel allowing the ppf to heatsoak a bit more
And don't just dump it all on at once😅
To remove any glue...Eucalyptus oil. Works a treat!
I made my own grille guards. Cardboard template, black zip ties, and painted the metal black. You can barely tell the are there, with them being black.
911 coming along nicely! Still not sure what’s going on with the truck’s wheel setup though. 🤔
Yea yea yea lol
Like wrapping a car you should leave all the parts on for ppf removal. The parts won't move around much.
I also mix acetone with goo gone and it worked out for me.
If you use a torch on the front bumper you can melt it into a small ball to take up less room in the landfill before you buy a new one.
Thx for the shout out in the video, sorry the boiling water didn't work, it's just the fact it's old ppf, ik Ammo NYC uses a electric kettle full of water and towel to maintain heat. But this is prob the worse condition ppf I've seen
It's just so old lol.
After buying a front center radiator from a rock strike.....I would highly recommend reinstalling the grill guards
Put the grills back in stops a lot debris and damage to the Condenses a must have item .
Unusually aim for over the trailer axles to keep the torque weight down.
Keep the grill guards on. Helps you keep the radiators clean from leaves and all the other gunk that might end up there.
Yep. I like the look without them, but you then need to remove the bumper occasionally to clean the radiators or they can corrode and fail. P.S. don’t forget to remove those ducts over the radiators and make sure they are clean before you re-install the bumper.
Exactly, I am planning to install a pair on my 996 too, your radiators will thank you later
@ammonyc has a few good videos on removing old ppf. Use a towel to hold the water on the panel longer
Grill guards help keep the debris from collecting behind the bumper and they help protect the radiators from stones.
But they are not necessary by any means. I don't have them and i simply have to clean out behind the front bumper once or twice a year.

FYI next time when trying to remove PPF with hot water, put a towel over the panel. Then drench the towel with the hot water. The towel will retain the hot water and the heat.
And a thermal bottle
Put the guards back in otherwise you will have issues with leaf debris in your rads
Matt, great job, the ppf sucks to remove but you’re doing a great job! Merry Christmas and can’t wait to see the 997 painted!
GT2 front bumper is the answer to your PPF woes!
Yes you need the girl guards. My 997 would collect leaves and they would accumulate in front of the radiators. I’m not too sure about the rear wing. Might want to consider leaving it off. Your car will be fast enough without the wing. You want understated elegance and speed. Merry Christmas
I looked for a stock one but they are out of budget.
I used aircraft adhesive remover on the tough stuff. Good luck and good job!
Definitely keep the stone guards - the radiators will thank you!
Maybe a mineral oil / olive oil would work. We use it to remove stubborn stickers.
You wouldn’t escape from that plastic razor blade, though
Tip to remove the glue rests.. silicon remover. Soke an papertowel full of silicon remover and let it sit for a while. Than remove the glue with a plastic scraper :) i know.. too late for this tip 😅
If you don't put the mesh grill guards back just stick a vacuum in/around the radiators every once in a while.
Try Organge oil - it could work for the remaining adhesive.
Great progress as always. Grill guards are a must. After watching all of your vids, my only gripe is those clown wheels on the Duramax. Why Matt, why...
Merry Christmas eve all!!
Matt, you are going to paint it anyway. You could just used brake cleaner on a rag to remove that PPF residue, just keep it off plastic. You should really keep those grill guards, the first time you kill a heat exchanger you’ll be thankful.
Best porsche project on the internet right now 🔥🔥
Thanks so much!
To remove tint and PPF, I use a little household steamer
Hope you are on Santa's Nice list and you get a nice Porsche 911 repainted under your tree.
Same!
7:38 gasoline is the way ,wet towel with gasoline that’s the greatest solvent. Or a brake cleaner if you care about the paint ,but if don’t as you will paint the parts just use gasoline for the glue part.
ON the grill guards you will want to put those or something like it on to keep debris out of the vents
The grill guards keep leaves and other junk from blocking your radiators up and premature failure.
Great video exciting progress. Painter guys will do better work after all of your disassembly.
Stoked to see the paint job!
Same!
Thank you for a year of quality videos top job 👍👍👍🇬🇧🙏
So nice of you!
Matt. Next time get the goo gone from Home Depot. Comes in a gallon and it’s industrial. Not the citrus stuff. Much better and stronger
Crunchy PPF; my favorite. That masking tape was no match for you after dealing with PPF😂
Agreed lol
I told you gasoline takes the residue off fast and you need a little steam generator that’s how they pull that stuff off for a heat gun
Jack the front of the trailer up next time you load or unload
Merry Christmas Matt!
Looking forward to seeing your 997 after the paint job. Bet it will look amazing! Merry Christmas!
Stoked to see next video!
Great work Matt, can’t wait to see the finished product 👏🏻
Merry Christmas 🎄
Merry Christmas bud
I wonder if you can add rear steer to a 997... that 997 is def not trail rated... it looks so nice... can't wait.
Buy a portable streamer to remove the PPF. Great progress. Merry Christmas (n’at)
Maybe it’s because i’m in the UK and the pick up truck culture isn’t as strong here but the way those wheels stick out from the body just looks so strange and weird, just doesn’t look right. The police would 100% pull you over 🤣🤷🏻♂️
Would pouring the water onto a towel and letting it sit allow you to keep the film warm while you remove it?
For a guy that owns 2 P cars you should full metal jacket gag (can't say Cho&e on the tube) yourself for those wheels on the truck. PS grease the ball on that hitch.
I need see the next step 😂😂😂😂 very good work
well I'm definitely not looking forward to the PPF removal!! I'll start that next week... good job dude
Did you try ammonia to remove the PPF? Works grand for window tint curious if it works for the thicker protection film
Rapid remover for the PPF residue
Acetone would of been your best friend to deal with that ppf
14:05 You couldn't find a bigger trailer?! :D
Nope lol
merry christmas to you too and yours, Mat 🎉
Merry Christmas
Happy Christmas Matt!!
Same to you!
IR hotplate 5gal stockpot :)
Keep the grill guards they save all the crap and leaves going in there messing up your radiators
Hi Matt. Thanks for the great content you’ve provided us with over the past year and beyond. Love this channel. Merry Christmas to you and your partner and have a great new year. Can’t wait to see what you’re going to bring us in 2024 😀
Thanks so much and same to you!
Merry Christmas Matt
Don't be the guy that takes a car to the body shop spewing coolant, lol
I was lol
Merry Christmas 🎄
Same to you!
When you put the 997 on the trailer, the trailer probably said “are you in yet?”
Yup lol
What the hell kind of ppf was that?! I’ve never seen it flake like that, usually you can steam it and pull it off in one piece. Anyway, Merry Christmas to you and yours!!
Probably original Porsche PPF. my 997 had 12 yrs old PPF that flaked off like that too. It’s a major pain to remove. In the end I found GOOF OFF to work the best in removing it.
use a steamer for the ppf in the future.
Why didn't you try Goof Off for the adhesive? I don't mean the citrus cleaner, I mean the one that smells like TCE.
I'll have to get some lol
Progressing very well 👍
Do us all a favour and loose the huge fin please 🙏
Car look well phatttttt…….. from the overhead shots 😮
The fin?
I think he means the rear wing? If so, I also vote going back to factory (either OEM Turbo or GT2).
@@matt13ross rear spoiler 👍
Nice man. Glad you got it in for paint. I think maybe it’s acetone based or something, but it gets stuff off that nothing else would, even straight acetone. Merry Christmas and happy holidays Matt
Ya Goof Off is way better than Goo Gone, even WD40 works better
I love the irony of them leaving PPF on for so long that you have to screw the paint to get it off
Yup lol
It is the rules. If you don’t say “that’s not going anywhere,” it will go somewhere. Like getting in a manual car; if you don’t give that shifter a couple test wobbles, who knows what havoc could happen.
Absolutely!
Attaching the bumper to the car will let you use both hands to remove the ppf...
Matt, at this point, any Porsche repair shop will hire you, or you could start your own shop😂
Hahaha
If you are going to paint the parts you’ll need to sand it. Why don’t you sand off the ppf?
It gunks up the paper
im thinking for the PPF try to use some lighter gaz, or straight gaz
And light it lol
Is the plan to keep those wheels that are on the car? I think those with that tire size look great
For now yes. But not long term.
Thousands of exotic owners are gonna MURDER their ppf delaers when it comes times to take it off of let's say a Aventador or rari lol.
Been there done that with las Vegas hear and flat black hood wrap on my old LBZ. Unreall
Yup!! Lol
We have the same stove
You need a steamer to remove the ppf
i used gas to clean the glue
just a thought, but how would paint stripper go on the PPF?
Not sure. Might work
Somebody shop inferred lights and a heat gun are probably the best solution for removing ppf but it still sucks…. Unless removed within a couple of years max… (the sun and weathering makes the film go hard and brittle and the glue bonds to the paint)… ppf causes more work and issues than simply painting the scratches and stone chips and doesn’t cost as much as a ppf job.
Old PPF is sooo bad
Sorry Matt, I stopped watching the video because I got hooked on playing POP SLOTS.

@@matt13ross there's a door lever kit at Suncoast Parts. They're on sale right now for $50 per side. I tried posting the link several times, but it keeps getting deleted.

Steamer is your friend
Hi Matt!
Hello!
Who's ever in that much of a rush, that your wife couldn't wait for you to move?,?
Life tip: Don't be beholden to the clock!
Haha true!
