This video made me curious about my guitar teacher who I took lessons with from 1997 until maybe 2000. He was hugely influential to my playing and is likely the reason that I always stayed interested in guitar and am still an active guitarist today. Unfortunately my internet search on him resulted in finding his obituary from 2016. He was only 63. I wish I could have let him know how much of an impact his lessons, instructions, and guidance left on me. It's so great that you got to do this for your teacher.
I felt this man. Tried looking up my teacher a few months back. Apparently he passed away in 2019. Alone. None of his family was with him, just people who were kind enough to post about his condition and ask for help. He looked scared. It broke my heart. He’s actually the reason I picked up a guitar instead of buying a GPU, I just felt like I needed to at least learn guitar to a better standard for him and for the younger me. I always felt bad about how I ignored him during highschool when he tagged me in posts and shit, he was always nice about it in a “grandpa who doesn’t understand Facebook etiquette” kinda way. Now I wish I at least talked with him a bit.
Thank you, one of the cool things that's happened over the last while is seeing usernames like yours that I begin to recognize, thanks for watching and being involved Mreenal Mams!
@@samuraiguitarist Haha thank you so much for noticing.. You've been inspiring me since years ago (I don't even remember when, but certainly since the kitchen videos..
Take you for sharing this! When I was learning to play guitar back in 2004, (at the time) my parents were a bit annoyed by me learning and practicing super loudly but there was a man that lived on my block that was a jazz/blues musician that would constantly talk to my dad and hear me “rock out”. One day he asked my dad if he can go up stairs and talk to me and that was when we officially met, his name was Miles, his friends called him EmmJay. Through out the years he mentored me, invited me to his gigs and plays that he would be performing the music on. And then on the Jan 2014 I noticed that he hasnt been moving his car and he started to get a lot of parking tickets. I then saw his car get towed and then people were leaving his apartment with his music gear and his main guitar, a red fender strat with a faded white pickguard. I asked them what happened and they told me that EmmJay passed away on Christmas Eve and he was alone. Watching this video really meant a lot because I think of EmmJay as the first person to have believed in me and motivated to keep practicing. Thank you so much for sharing dude.
That was SO SWEET. And the sparkle in his eyes, when he realized it was his to keep. Thank you Sammy for sharing, thank you Adam for continuously sparking it in Sammy, thank you Samurai Dad for being such an awesome tinkerer.
The Samurai and the Sensei...great story. I'm thinking since he taught you, working together as pro's was a cinch. The amp gift, it's how we all dream of saying thank you to such an influence in life. Love it!
I forget alot that you are Canadian but the more excited Adam got the more obvious it became. This was so awesome to watch. Really enjoyable to see people experience such joy
Man that's a special gift for a really cool friend and mentor. I would tear up a bit. If your dad was up for another build that could be auctioned off for some worthy charity (the Childrens Hospital in Winnipeg?) perhaps that would be lit.
Thanks Warren! It's a great idea and I once I talked to him about building and selling or giving away amps but he's not super keen, there's liability stuff you get into as soon as you are dealing with high voltage electronics. Cheers!
There's just something so wholesome about everything in this video. Going from teacher & student relationship to friends in bands. Dad supporting his kid's hobby, and actively participating in it for both his pleasure and the benefit of his son. To gifting a priceless piece of a hand built icon of music from someone who always supports you, to someone who basically always supported you musically. My father has also built me and my brother amps and cabs, so this video really hits me in the feels. Genuinely refreshing video to see during these troubled times.
Great video! It's cool that the amp was made by your Dad. Treasure him while you have him - I've watched your videos long enough to be sure that you do treasure him. My Dad passed away in 2019 and even though I'm now 64 I still miss the advice and help he was always able to offer. His support and that of my late mother was crucial in me becoming a life long guitarist
I wouldn't say I catch every single one of your videos, but I am glad this one made into my feed. What an incredible story, and am thankful for you sharing!
This was such a beautiful thing to see. The history you had with your teacher, and just seeing his reaction was so perfect. Sometimes paying it forward is the way to go, and you did such a great thing, doing this for your first teacher, you could definitely tell he appreciated everything about it.
I watched this twice. First for the reaction of your teacher and second time for your reaction. I had the biggest smile both times. I really think tis was one of the greatest clips to view this year. Thanks for this beautiful moment between you and a person you care for.
This is so great. Loved the story from initially being disappointed in this "Adam guy" being your teacher to the smile on his face when receiving the gift. SammyG, your dad is an inspiration for all dads. You're a lucky dude. Hope Adam enjoys this amp for the rest of his days. Wholesome video and put a smile on my face.
I love seeing things come full circle like this. I recently got into contact with the guy who taught me how to play guitar and it’d be amazing to be able to do something like this.
Paying it forward in the best possible way! Your Dad is a truly talented artist, and he nailed the 5e3 sound (I know as I have one) I would have recognised it from sound only without video tbh 😊
Such a beautiful gift to give your first teacher! He will enjoy it for many, many miles of music making to come! I really love your snazzy cabinet, which turns heads and ears alike. Many people will be asking you how to get one. They both sound pretty darn glorious just like the OG! Maybe you can find out more details about how your dad made it and share for the people who love to geek about homemade gear.
Your father is incredible. These are beautiful, and this was a beautiful thing that you did for your friend. The world would be a much better place if there were more people like you and your dad in it.
This is my debut viewing samuraiguitarist. This was an incredible video to me. How amazing and sincere. I will go on a binge of your content now. Subbed!. Samurai Dad is quite the engineer. I have so many reasons as to why the first musical teacher thing is really special to me but its too much to ramble on about here. Mr. Sullivan and Mr. Dugger will always hold a special place in my bass guitarist heart.
What a wholsome video! Your guitar teacher seems like such a good guy too. He deserves that amp. Your dad did a stellar job with those amps too by the way. He should become a boutique builder and get his amps into the hands of more people.
As a tinkerer myself ( I'm not as good as Samurai Dad), I need a Samurai Dad youtube channel where we just watch him work. That's gonna be so awesome and therapeutic to watch
I always love coming back to your channel. I don’t play as much as I used to, but I was born and raised in Winnipeg and it just always brings me such joy. I used to play at cowboys too, and Dix, and the pal, I loved those gigs. The way we talk, the reaction for some reason just felt like home. So the video was much appreciated, thank you.
I'm still smiling here! Nice to see you pass on to your friend and mentor when you had a change! You also gave us back home a good fuzzy feeling so the gift didn't end there =)
Man, I've seen a whole bunch of your videos and never heard your voice do that which it did right around the 2min mark. Must've been a great feeling to be able to give Adam this awesome gift!
4:43 I've watched a good number of your videos and this might be the best short demo track you've done. Everything from the music to your phrasing is gorgeous, great stuff. Maybe worth making a longer version.
Well, this inspired me to look up my old guitar teacher John Perrone, who taught me classical guitar at the Royal Conservatory back in the 70s. I found his obituary, and there was able to post a photo of him playing guitar and to leave a short message. I would rather have been able to gift him with an instrument like you just did; I remember when I brought in my newly custom made Renaissance lute to play for him, and how pleased he was to hear some of my repertoire pieces played on the lute, for which they were originally written! :) (Under his tutelage I won a silver medal for highest Conservatory exam grade in the Province on guitar that year! Still have it.)
Adam's reaction was golden! What an amazing moment! And your dad makes some amazing amps! Really love the work on the steam punk amp!!! He clearly pays close attention to detail!
It's hard to judge coming from a video camera, uploaded to youtube, then played though my computer speakers, but it sounds really, really good! Your dad is a heck of maker, and you're a generous guy!
I have a hunch your Dad would simply impale all the 'Let's Build" channels on the 'Tubes. Haha, holy smokes man, too good. Good on your Dad, congrats to you both, and so happy for your mentor / friend. You've got a great story there, and it's even greater because of it just being your life. Cheers!
