    This week's news I'm most excited for is the XFCE update. In it's current version, it is already one of the most underrated DEs out there.

    XFCE + Wayland is going to cause some serious shakedown in the Linux world.

      XFCE on Wayland would be my go-to, at least until Cosmic is truly usable. The XFCE bar on wlroots compositors would also go hard af.

    Re: Cinnamon new force quit dialog: one problem with such an implementation is - GNOME apps (i.e. CSD apps). To show a "force quit dialog", the window manager needs to understand that you are trying to close the app, and if the wm/compositor doesn't control the close button, it doesn't have a good way to identify that. The way this is implemented in Plasma is that once a CSD app stops responding to input events (delivered by the compositor), the compositor starts to capture clicks on an predetermined area at the top right of the window (i don't remember if they draw a new close button there, I'll check later) and if it detects a click again - it will show the "force quit" dialog. The result is that if a CSD app freezes, you need multiple clicks on the close button, over a period of several seconds, to get the dialog, and thats annoying. Add that to the long list of reasons why CSD is bad.

    Cool news this week! I'm a GNOME user, but XFCE was my first DE while messing around with my Raspberry Pi before fully switching to Linux, so I have a very soft spot for it. As for the Mozilla stuff... XFCE needs
    1. a more eye pleasing default theme
    2. wayland support
    3. It has all the apps for individual settings (network, display etc) why not create a single pane that will have those apps to be opened from there to make life easier I never understood. They don't have to be integrated like KDE/Gnome in that central pane, just to have them there so you can easily find what you look for

    Hearing that the Pine Note is going to be Gnome based with custom extensions kills any and all excitement I had for it. I don't begrudge people who use Gnome, but it's just a fact that it's extremely hard to work with when you want to use it for something outside of it's intended purpose. The software is going to be buggy, annoying to use because it's going to be full of workarounds, and get updates very infrequently as the developer has to rewrite all of the extensions every time Gnome gets an update.

    • @michael_tunnell
      @michael_tunnell  День назад

      Lutris predates Steam on Linux, Lutris is also a tool for emulation which won’t work in Steam without a lot of messing around and some emulators don’t work in Steam at all.
      Heroic is for Epic Games which last I checked none of their games support Steam, could be wrong here
      Bottles is for WINE wrapping and packaging and separation of multiple versions of wine so you can run stuff that depends on different versions at the same time

    • @michael_tunnell

      This is not what happened, Mozilla reverted the action and it has only to do with uBlock Origin Lite, it doesn’t even really make sense to use on Firefox when uBlock Origin full version is supported still so it’s more of just a misstep in how they manage extension reviews. The real main uBlock Origin has not been affected and is still in the store

  • @MadalinIgnisca
    @MadalinIgnisca 4 часа назад

    Mozilla is not what it was 10+ years ago. Time to move on, there are plenty of good browsers with transperency, and support ublock origin 😅

      based on ... Firefox.

    • @michael_tunnell
      @michael_tunnell  3 часа назад

      Mozilla Firefox does support uBlock Origin this is about the weaker unnecessary uBlock Origin Lite. The Lite version is a requirement on Chrome because Google is nerfing ad blockers in Chrome. This is not the case in Firefox. Firefox still supports the real full uBlock Origin.
      Also there are not really plenty of good browsers out there in my opinion. If a browser is based on Chromium then they are just adding to the power of Google. Something based on Firefox would be good but there’s not a lot of those. There’s really not a good alternative outside of that so Firefox is really the only true competition in terms of vs Google

      That is strong statement when it is in top 6 distros.

    • @michael_tunnell
      @michael_tunnell  День назад

      I would agree with @ShadowManceri that it is a strong statement. Manjaro released a new Immutable edition 2 months ago, launched a redesign of their website 3 months ago, and added a new CTO 6 months ago. I don't think it is close to dead, bad at building hype, yea but not dead.
      Side Note: @ShadowManceri the rankings on DistroWatch don't really mean anything. DistroWatch is good for a lot of reasons but that ranking list is a bad thing because they make people think it is some kind of judgment ranking and when it is solely just about how many hits a distro's page is getting on the DistroWatch website and nothing more. It could be called a "trending" list if they wanted but Ranking is a bad term. MX Linux has been at #1 since 2018 and is it the #1 distro for a solid 6 years? Nah. It is likely the distro that links people to their DistroWatch page the most though.

    • @ShadowManceri
      @ShadowManceri День назад

      @@michael_tunnell I'm fully aware that Distrowatch isn't some all-knowing authority. But we don't really have anything better to go by. DW also tends to favor more exotic distros since the people who visit DW are more likely to use them. (Similar to how Steam has a strong bias toward gamers.) It also relies on user-agent string parsing, which not every browser or distro configures (Insert here a rant how user-agent should be removed). That said, DW is still a good indicator of what's popular. For example, saying that something is "dead" while it's trending is the opposite of that. On the other hand, if a distro is at position 60 and its trend is declining, that's a strong sign it's dying. People are abandoning it. Nobody really uses DOS anymore, so it's "dead," but we also know it's still getting updates, so it likely has some users (mainly due to old games rather than running it as a primary OS).
      If a platform like RUclips were to reveal these kinds of stats, they would probably be far more accurate-at least for Western home desktop usage. I specify "home" because work usage could be restricted, for example. This also introduces a bias toward mobile devices since, if desktop access is restricted at work, people may turn to their phones instead. So, you might see a higher percentage of phone users who would have used something else if they could. I also say "Western" because countries like China have many of their own services, which isn't a trivial number to be ignored.
      Every service has its biases, whether based on geography, political views, or something else. Minorities also tend to be more active and vocal, which adds another layer of bias when counting hits.
      So yes, Distrowatch is far from perfect. If you can show me a better alternative, I'll gladly use it. Personally, I take all of this with a huge jug of salt, considering that 80% of statistics are made up on the spot.
