There is a live version where Jarkko sings this, no heavy version that is so beautiful. Topelius was Finland H.C Andersen a man who wrote lovely childrens stories. About this song, Topelius travelled to Italy, he lived during the 18rh century. He stopped to a cafe from where he could see Etna. He saw in a small cage a bird that did not sing, so he wrote a poem about that bird and how he longed home to Finland. Sylvia is that birds Latin name. This was not a Christmas song from the beginning, but soon became one of the most popular Christmas song today here.

@@tasminoben686 Merry Christmas to you too. The lyrics are actually so beautiful, don't know if the english version could capture the true meaning.

Piia Lindqvist2019 There is even more to this song than that. Topelius was a great nature lover and he was sad and furious about the fact that they were hunting Sylvias in Italy and the bird was considered to be a delicasy. They locked one bird which they had made blind in the gace and when it called its flock to come people would hunt the other birds with nets. Topelius saw this ”cagebird” and made the poem. He even wrote to queen of Italy to ask her kindly to put a stop to the birdhunting. Also Topelius had lost his son two years prior and part of the poem is his sorrow of that. Very emotional poem.

@@mantailuaa thanks for the story, that is how I heard it too. Topelius also founded the Humane Society in Finland, taking care of animals. It is still running to this day.

I love Jarkko's voice, he is my favourite singer, but this song sounds so much better in Finnish (in my opinion).

Hi Kelly, I’ve been a bit out of touch with youtube lately, but great to come back to this song. I love Rasksta Joulua, and this song is beautiful. Have you heard the Finnish version? I’ve heard the album in both Finnish (with one song in Swedish too I think) and English, and I actually think the songs sound even better in the native language. The album has some wonderful songs on it, and features many singers I’m a huge fan of.
Anyway, thank you for the reaction video. I’m glad you enjoyed the song, and I wish you a wonderful Christmas.

What a strange coincidence that you would react to this. I just listened to the Raskasta Joulua IV album this evening after your live stream. It was a very nice listen even though I didn't understand a word as it was in Finnish. It was also all acoustic so I wouldn't call it "Heavy Christmas" per the band's name (translated to English). This is much more metal and suits the band's "heavy" name, especially that guitar solo! Jarkko is an awesome vocalist...and so are the others who perform in that band too. Merry Christmas (again), Kelly! Cheers!

Jarkko's White Christmas from this same album starts with beautiful clean 'Christmas vocals' and then changes to full on metal / rock vocals

Oh, again beloved Jarkko, amazing in Christmas time :) thanks for your reaction :) personally I prefer in Finnish version "Sylvian joululaulu". But I understand, most people prefer in English, you have to love finnish to listen in this version:)

Merry Christmas Kelly and thank you for your lovely reaction. This album is the Finnish Raskasta Joulua (Heavy Christmas) english album version. I also realise this must be first time you actually hear proper audio recording of Jarkko's. He has released several solo Christmas albums. It all started when he - a full on heavy metal singer - sang this song in
finnish live on TV Christmas concert with symphony orchestra back in the day.
