It happened quickly because this is the second crack at it. Kind of like how spiderman: Homecoming didn't do the whole uncle ben dying thing again.
Don't forget to check the list of FMAB episodes which have post-credit scenes or custom ending visuals. Some of them are quite important!

So incase you didn’t quite get it the reason why ed is able to perform alchemy without a transmutation circle unlike the rest of the characters is because when he performed the human transmutation for the first time and lost his leg we see him in the white place with “god” and he gets taken through the door. It’s during this moment ed saw everything in the universe broken down into its very molecular components, thusly gaining the knowledge and understanding to perfectly perform alchemy aka the craft of turning one thing into another using equivalent exchange. The price for this knowledge was his leg and is the reason why you see it be taken from him at the start of the human transmutation ritual.
Additionally this is why ed lost his arm as when he performed the human transmutation ritual for a second time, he bonded alphonse’s soul to the body of armour, which he paid his arm for.

Fullmetal has a very robust philosophical text, but much of it is expressed in subtext. Episode 3 is one of the most expository in this regard, but there are still many subtleties in it that are only understood from the general overview of the work (in fact, this event is the first event in the manga).
Another excellent anime that has an interesting philosophical approach is Monster. It's worth leaving on the list.

You should watch Monster. Imo this is the best anime of all time..
Sub is good but this is one of the rare occasions that dub is better, has all the top power house dub voice actors in it
The show is fast paced because they cut scenes from the original FMA anime. Either for budget reasons or just assuming people already know the story, they removed a lot of the build up. I actually prefer the longer build up of the original
Not the biggest fan of reactors watching subbed, as I be at work. I can't actually physically watch the screen all that much. But John is a HIM, so...im conflicted 😅

I understand you completely but, the dub for this is REALLY good and i always lean towards sub
I would highly recommend the dub instead of the sub. The dub is considered one of, if not the best dub of all time.
I know this is just a "Trust me, bro." But I implore you to swap to the dub.
