Reki said a line in Episode 1 "At any rate why dont we at least clean up this room. To be born into a room full of junk like this is kind of sad" when they discovered Rakka's cocoon, and now seeing her own flashback it makes that line quite sad becaue this is exactly how Reki was born - alone, in a boarded up room full of junk.
Lovely discussion and reaction, thank you.

By mentioning "mono no aware", you reminded me of another term that seems to be a key concept of the anime.
"Ikigai" - a concept that refers to something that gives a person a sense of purpose, a reason to live. Something that makes life being worth living for them, something that gives them fulfillment. It's also a feeling that your life has meaning, as well as the fulfillment that comes from pursuing your passions.
One of the things that Haibane seems to need is to find their purpose, something that would make their life meaningful. Ikigai isn't something you're born with, or something someone can teach you, it's something you have to discover for yourself.

The opening of episode 10 is a masterpiece of story telling, all without dialogue. There's no music to start, all is silent and at first the only indication of life is the little twitch of Reki's hand; then Nemu running to get help, and the discovery of the new hatchling.
Reki must have screamed in pain as Rakka did when her wings emerged and attracted Nemu's attention. Your expressions at 1:59 show the impact of that bloody scene. It forces a comparison of the differences between the two's birth events - Rakka had the support of all the Haibane but Reki went through all that trauma alone, with no guidance as to what was happening. "Where am I?", "WHO am I?", "Why is this happening to me?". All Rakka's questions, with no one to answer. It's horrifying to imagine.
I would think all the cocoons are placed in Haibane "nests" expressly so they will be discovered early enough to avoid what Reki went through, but with that room being boarded up, the residents missed it. In episode 1, the first time we see a Haibane is Reki walking the empty wing of Old Home. Perhaps she was patrolling (and cleaning) so that any cocoons will be found and attended. If not for that, Rakka might have had a similar experience.

Yep.. it was only afterwards that I realised Reki had had to go through the painful process of growing wings all on her own.

i don’t want to give it completely away, but there is a good way to know exactly what happens to Haibane that miss their day of flight. if you pay close attention to the Communicator, and his outfit, while he is describing to Rakka how Haibane lose their wings, etc. also how they must live away from everyone else… how does the Communicator and the Toga live their lives? ;)
One connection i drew just now watching your recap was between the crow in the bottom of the well, and the bird skeleton from Angel's Egg.
there are visual parallels between these two anime -- in Angel's Egg, we see many eggs growing above vines, which look similar to the cocoons that Haibane are born from. the Egg in Angel's Egg represents Faith, and Hope. And i think that each cocoon, and Haibane can represent this same faith and hope as well. Hope that they are each able to figure out their own issues, fulfill their purpose in the town, and eventually take their Day of Flight.
And this Hope extends to each of us individually. That we will come to Earth, find and fulfill our purpose, and pass on peacefully. The Hope that we will be able to overcome our own challenges and find the meaning in our own lives, and overcome our own difficulties. There is hope for each and every Egg!
Anyways, these shows have similar art styles, some direct visual metaphors, "Angels" and both deal with existential questions. I had never connected the dots on until just now and thought it was interesting.
I really appreciate you, and cannot wait at all for your final thoughts on the show.

It seems to me through this rewatch that the communicator and other members of the Haibane Renmei are previous haibane that were left behind. I don't remember if I realized this on my first watch. Things seem to be progressing smoother than I remember as well, which is nice. Still not sure what's up with the voices Rakka hears while within the walls. I don't think it's trying to say the souls of the haibane who have left are trapped in them. But if they've left I'm not sure why there would be voices, unless it's something else completely.

Maybe they become the Toga? (toga cant communicate with humans or haibanes, so it can fit the description of a failed haibane in a way ). Although the togas were depicted walking in groups or in pairs, so all in all it wouldnt be that lonely of a life, they still seem to have some contact with the world, at least not as reclusive as I thought at first.
But on the flipside, the Toga can go outside the walls which would go in opposition to the idea of punishment for not being able to take the day of flight. That would be very weird to be awarded the right to go outside the walls for your failure to move on as a haibane....
So probably your theory is more correct - becoming the members of Haibane Renmei sounds more plausible. They would still remain in the city, just away from the society.

I just finished watching the show a few weeks ago and had the first video of the series recommended to me. Didn’t expect that I’d watch all these videos considering their lengths, but well, I’ve managed to make my way here. These videos have been a wonderful reflection on this series. I really appreciate your connections you make with philosophy, it really opens up another depth of understanding that I had not received on my initial watch. This series leaves so much open a lot of room for interpretation, and it has been really been interesting hearing someone else’s takes and theories about the show. Thank you for creating this series, and excited to see the final episode when it releases

Not sure if recommendations are a thing or not/if this is the place to leave them but just wanted to say that I'd love it if we could get a breakdown of some of Hakos Baelz' original music from hololive. Always love your deep dives on the vtuber side of things

There's some really great moments for Reki in episode 10. To pick two personal favourites - she asks to take responsibility for Rakka's 'crime' of touching the Wall. She asks to not be a burden on Nemu. The world is full of idiots indeed, huh?
