I was 11. I was at the Fair Day, in Fethard, Co Tipperary. In 1957. I was in short pants, sandals and carried an ‘ash plant’ - I was helping my Dad sell his cattle. He introduced me to a well-dressed, stocky man - ‘This is Dan Breen, Fianna Fáil TD for South Tipperary’. Dan gave me a half-crown, saying, ‘Look after your Daddy - mine died young. I hardly remember him!’
I stopped at a picture of Dan’s wedding this Jan in the National Museum, Collins Barracks and reflected kindly on him. He’s been given a hard press in recent times.

Married a relative of Dan's, hard headed gal, couldn't live without her. Dan had more guts than pretty much anyone I've heard of, an unrepentant killer for his homeland. How can you say that's bad.

My grandfather was Ray Breen and I so wonder if this is my ancestor?! I am hard headed as a bull, been called Rage a time or two as a nickname. Lol I beat up many a person in my old neighborhood to protect my sons from harm. Never got in trouble because I was on the right side of the situation. Anyways I truly wonder if I am a descendant of this Dan Breen....I haven't really ever looked into my lineage. I live in Ohio, and was raised in Kentucky but family mostly settled in West Virginia.
