Got trials tomorrow and realised that I was CLUELESS about half of the questions when reading through a past paper, this video helped massively. Thank you!!!!!
Thanks for the video , I have exams in 8 days . I always struggle with writing to much and waffling to much about one point rather than keeping it short and brief with a wide range of points…Do you have any advice on how much I should write about on each point . And do you usually use a P.E.E structure ?
Hi, this video is so helpful, thanks a lot! Also, do you think its best to read the whole extract first before answering questions or going bit by bit so reading. For example, reading the first section then listing 5 things u are told about an character
Hi! That’s an EXCELLENT question, thank you so much! So the answer entirely depends on your reading ability. If you’re not confident, then rule off and take it Q by Q. If you are, you have the chance to immerse yourself in the paper so read first then answer Qs (but still rule off!) absolute best of luck! PS you can list more than five if you want, they’ll just check/mark them all 👍
You know for the 10 mark questions, when you put 10 quotes in your answer but briefly explain what they mean with simple language do you get full marks?
I would recommend something like 8 quotes with a couple commented on in a little detail. To get full marks it requires a little more than a simple one mark per minute
You’re welcome, Holly! It really depends on how confident you are as a reader. In total no more than ten minutes but that could be reading it question by question depending on the lines or all in one go
Is how much you have written in your sample answers sufficient to achieve top marks in each question or should I be aiming to write more? Thanks for the video it was very helpful
Is there any difference between aqa and eduqas and if i have done aqa gcse lang previously can i do eduqas and still apply to medicine? As i’m from manchester and this concerns me
Hi! So in terms of the examination papers there are differences but they’re slight. In terms of the qualifications they’re exactly the same so if you have a gcse already they’ll never know which exam board you studied under
I never know if I should use PEEL for my answers. for question 2, do you need to use it or do I just PE. And for the 10-mark questions do I write one PEEL for each quote or do I do the same thing as question 2?
My school said for Q2 to write 3-5 small paragraphs with 1 quote per paragraph and for Q3-5 write 7-10 small paragraphs with 1 quote per paragraph is that fine?
Hello, I have been told by different teachers different things when it comes to adding an overview to the answers. Should I go straight into the quotes and tracking or add one or two lines at the beginning as an overview? Or even do a whole paragraph on an overview?
Ah, that’s a brilliant question. Whatever you do, the key is consistency. I teach this - Quoting - ‘xxx’ Speech - “xxx” Quoting speech - ‘ “xxx” ‘ As I say, the rules get muddled but that’s what I was taught at university. With that being said, whatever you do just be consistent and don’t muddle what you do 👍
I have my exam tomorrow and I don’t know what it is but I always mess up on the reading questions, I suspect it’s a structure issue maybe or that I don’t get straight to the point and waffle leaving me with less time so that I miss a question, any tips?
Can u get full mark on the reading questions with doing 5 point and evidence (PE) for 5 marker question and ten of them with one point evidence and explain (PEE) each for the ten marker question?! And what do you mean by strong mark is it like 7/10 or 3/5 ? Many thanks
Hi there! In order: - yes you can, just keep it brief and precise - for the ten marker probably 7-8 with deeper explanation a few times will do - grade wise anything up to or higher than 7/10 is going to be in the top grade category (grades 7-9) Hope that helps but please let me know! Thanks!
@ what i have done for november exams is that i have done 4-5 pe for 5 markers and i think two of them were with deep explanation and 7-10 quotes and two of them were with deep explanation for the 10 marker questions as well so would it qualify a top grade many thanks
👍 I’ll get that done in the next 24 hours as a short. Just need to carefully think about how to explain it, as there’s a knack to it. Thanks for the comment!
@@GuigLit your welcome i have some like essays i do on language papers if you're free to mark them and tell me what i do wrong that would help me out a lot i can email you then if you'd like its just my teachers take quite long to mark and i have like 2 weeks till exam starts.
It depends what you’re aiming to achieve. You can get a strong 5, possibly a 6, with PEEL, however anything higher won’t really be possible as you need greater freedom in your writing.
I wouldn’t say it would mess with your marks. Truthfully the examiner won’t look for any specific layout on such a question but they do want to see coverage which is demonstrated through quotes
Thanks for the comment! It would be dishonest of me to *guarantee* anything. What I can say, however, is that there is a strong correlation between paragraphs packed with textual evidence and gaining higher marks. There should be a quote for ten markers in every other line as a minimum. I hope this helps 😊
@@GuigLit Thanks! My final concern is time. I keep wasting time finding quotes and thinking that I have to mention every single one of those quotes. I keep telling myself that “I won’t get the marks if I don’t mention … or …”. Could you help me with this? do i need to mention every quote I find??
You’re more than welcome and thank you for taking the time to watch my videos! That’s such a good question, it’s perfectly natural to feel that way. The truth of the matter is you’ll always have more quotes than you need - no 10 mark question needs more than 8 at the most, I would say. There’s more to it but crudely speaking marks 9 and 10 are gained by providing a slightly deeper level of analysis on certain chosen quotes. I hope that makes sense. Pick your battles, you’re not expected to put them all in 👍
My teacher said that to achieve 10/10 we need 10 p.e.e chains with quotes in each one. Is this true because I can't write fast enough to complete the paper in time
Not necessarily just save the first half of the answer booklet, clearly label which question it is and leave enough time to go back to the reading questions
Truthfully, you can write your answer to each question as a simple one-block paragraph, as you’re not marked for paragraphing on Fiction Reading component. The only exception to this is Q1 where you MUST LIST your answer
@@GuigLit Okay thank you, also I have watched a few different videos and some people are saying too right a few paragraphs whereas you are saying too right a single block with all the quotes and everything inside, would you say just doing what you said would be the most effective for me too get a high enough grade too pass as that’s all I would like.
Honestly the element of paragraphs is all down to choice, it’s good practice in the general sense but they don’t discriminate one way or the other for paragraphs it’s all about the amount and quality of quotes you provide.

(PE is point explain)
Hi! Great point. If you use PEEL then once for Q2 is advised. For the 10 markers twice or three times 👌
for q1 do you need a quote or can you just say what youve learnt
You need a bit of both - essentially something you’ve learnt from the text. Always write it as a list, though.
are you not supposed to mention things like the effect on reader and what types of tones are created
This can be included as a version of the ‘mini dig’s or analyses you would provide in a ten marker
For the 10 markers of question 3,4 and 5 , is your model example response of a grade 9 answer enough to write in the exam to secure top grades
Hi! Certainly a top grade, it should meet all the requirements for a 9 if not an 8, it’s such a fine margin between the two.
Hi, thanks for the video! Would you recommend writing conclusions for any of the 10 markers or would that just be a waste of time?
Avoid, apart from maybe Q5. The rest isn’t worth it
My school said for Q2 to write 3-5 small paragraphs with 1 quote per paragraph and for Q3-5 write 7-10 small paragraphs with 1 quote per paragraph is that fine?
Yep! That works 👍
For question 2,3 and 4 how often should I dig in and what do you exactly mean by digging in?
Hello, I have been told by different teachers different things when it comes to adding an overview to the answers. Should I go straight into the quotes and tracking or add one or two lines at the beginning as an overview? Or even do a whole paragraph on an overview?
Overviews are useful in places, mostly literature. They are useful for Q5 on this paper and Language P2 but nowhere else on Language I would say
Can I get away with making 7 points but with more quotes for the 10 marker if I want to hit a top band mark?
In all honesty probably not. Without a little analysis of two or three you’d struggle to get beyond a 7/10. Top band marks start at 8/10
When using quotes do you use 'xxx' or "xxx" ? As in the video you have used 'xxx' but my school told us to use "xxx"
Ah, that’s a brilliant question.
Whatever you do, the key is consistency.

Speech - “xxx”
Quoting speech - ‘ “xxx” ‘

For question one, listing 5 things, do I need to include quotes in my answer as well?
Quotes & comments on the text are both fine 👍
I have my exam tomorrow and I don’t know what it is but I always mess up on the reading questions, I suspect it’s a structure issue maybe or that I don’t get straight to the point and waffle leaving me with less time so that I miss a question, any tips?
