My grandson has this one, he also has the 0 scale and this year I got him the HO scale all Polar Express. He's only 6 years old but has been obsessed with trains since he was 2. He has an extensive train display that spans my daughter's entire downstairs and people come by to see it, he absolutely loves trains! I'm impressed with your beautiful train display too. Awesome! Thanks for the review, anyone interested in this one, get it! Its a beautiful train set for the younger kids to start out with.
5 years later and I still enjoy watching this video ... This - ready to go - Polar Express train set, in particular, is great because it has the letters - POLAR EXPRESS - under the cars' windows just like in the movie.
I had the original, they had the observation car, disappearing hobo car, and regular passenger car. Although it didn't actually have smoke if I remember correctly.
We picked up one of these last year on black friday, has the snow on the top of the cars as well. But didn't know about the 3rd announcement trick until now.
Well done video! I noticed the barn with Menards and Eau Claire, WI written on the roof. I’m from Chippewa Falls, WI and went to school at the UWEC. Just thought that was a cool little detail. I run G gauge under the Chrisrmas Tree but this set is on my wish list. Beatiful layout too!
I got the polar express in I think 2010 2011, it was my Christmas present. I almost lost it to Hurricane Sandy that hit New York in 2012. My basement flooded with salt water and we lost a lot of old stuff. We brought it up right before the storm hit.
Mine dose not smoke but the fluid is in and engine and switch is on. The smoke is not puffing out it just sits on top and gets cloudy and dose not come out
late response but your smoke heater thing might be broken but also you have to keep the train running for a while for the heat to build up to allow the smoke to work
Hi Sean, another great video. Lionel really hit the jackpot with the Polar Express series. I'm glad to see they kept the quality the same throughout the years. Just one thing you should keep the foot prints all going in the same direction...LOL.Frank
Unbelievable train table ! Wow . I have a question. I have the old style O gauge tubular track . Can I run the lionchief trains with he remote on those ? Or do I have to get the fast trac tracks ? I would hate to change over to those . Will the fast trac and tubular connect ? Please help I’m a newbie with the old Lionel set up will transformers etc . Thanks
No problem. They will run on any O Gauge track, so your tubular is perfectly fine! The difference will be that you will set the track voltage to a steady 16-18 volts. Then use the remote to control the train.
Funny, I got the Bluetooth version last week at the package was a slide out and it was all plastic packaging, AND it has the upgraded coach designs and such. Could they have just packaged it differently?
Sean's Trains, Cars and Other Stuff Channel yes. It has the bell, figures, and all 6 announcements you demonstrated. The box also looked like yours but it was a bit thinner because of the plastic shell. It did have the footprints in the snow too.
Ok yeah looks like they changed the packaging. Mine had a date on shipping box from end of 2017, yours is the 2018, both model runs had new snow on roofs. 2016 and below had no snow.
Sean, watching with my 11 & 4 year old train enthusiasts, we're impressed with your collection. Just brought set home for Christmas & looks like little one broke engine base. Any places in NYC you know of that make repairs?
@Johan Massy I know you got it repaired by now but this is just in case you need to get it repaired again. I live on Long Island near NYC, there is a Lionel store that’s near my house, I think you could get it repaired there, I got the polar express like 9-10 years ago.
Great video!! Would you happen to know the height and width of this train? I haven't purchased this train yet but wondering if it would fit inside a covered bridge I have. Thank you so much!! 🙏
You cannot run just the Lionchief with conventional at the same time, as the Lionchief requires constant 18v power to the track. Speed is controlled by the remote or app, not by track voltage on Lionchief engines. Lionchief Plus & Lionchief Plus 2.0 can run conventionally
I have a setup from 2011 before the snow covered car roofs. Unfortunately the Locomotive broke after a few hours of use (stopped moving and I heard nasty metal on metal contact noises.) I disassembled it the best I could and the gear coming from the motor seems to have bent all the teeth on the drive axle. I haven't been able to find any parts. I'm thinking about just picking up another set. I saw a Lionchief 2.0+ polar Express Locomotive in the 2019 Lionel catalog but it was really expensive compared to the starter sets. How do you feel about Lionchief 2.0+? I also like the 15 anniversary edition with the glossy Locomotive and metallic painted cars, but I don't think I've seen any metallic add on cars to be able to expand that train.
Not sure what you mean? If it is on a powered track and the remote is OFF then it will make the chirp. Just turn on the remote. Or take it off the track. That is the way it works.
I'm new to the channel, but do you have any Postwar stuff? And, do you might have the Lionel Rock Island 132 rare complete black alco diesel locomotive? We have one, and I love that we have it! Plus, I'm getting a REAL Lionel postwar Berkshire soon, so excited!
That's a shame, me and my father collect the Postwar stuff, and we got the Berkshire, it works, but the whistle tender needs a change of the whire as it shorts out on our layout, so we just use the Postwar Turbine's tender to replace the Berkshire's tender at the moment until the tender is finished. One thing I like about you is that your a young guy like me that has this love for model trains. I like that! There really aren't that many kids today that like playing with model trains! All they want to do now is play Fortnite or something! It's actually very hard for someone like me to actually find a person with the same interest at me. My state sucks at the model railroading community, my local train show is dying bad!
The loco used as the animated loco parent is Pere Marquette 1225 which Chris van allsburg saw many times when headed to Michigan state football games in owasso Michigan and that’s why the polar express models have the number of 1224 for the movie and the real loco number
This is a great video presentation for the new revised Polar Express! --- and what a great layout! --- I'm going to buy the Polar Express for Christmas 2020! --- Thank you so much!
the bell also becomes part of a collectors item so keep the bell for that reason or the set is worth less in the future if you decide to sell it. the actual train 1225 is in Owosso Michigan about 2 hours from me.
There's a conductor announcement car for the Lionchief sets. Instead of the "all aboard" call it plays random lines from the movie as the train accelerates or decelerates. I think it's for earlier Lionchief sets with black car roofs.
The set comes with the Puppet and Hot Chocolate car? Is there a difference between the passenger car that comes with the set and the Hot Chocolate Car?
Sean, watched this video several times, wanted to make sure I have all the cars. Great video and nice train. I think you made a mistake though, the car you call the "hot chocolate" car and the one proceeding it (the one you say the kids ride on) I'm pretty sure are the same cars. The window inserts are slightly different on either side so if you turn one of them around, pretty sure it's the same car as the other (I double checked my hot chocolate car to be sure) My particular set came with the disappearing hobo car included. It didn't have the puppet car so I found one on ebay. The "ninth" add on car is actually another version of the observation car with the hobo skiing and hero boy protruding off the end while holding on to the ski pole
I'm a little late, but I finally got this set, I wanted it for 10 years but could never afford it. EDIT: How much did it cost you to get all the addon cars?
Sean I enjoy your videos. Your layout is very nice looking. The oak trim work is beautiful. I recently purchased the same polar express. I also have another lion chief. The Santa Fe superchief. Occasional sparks are pretty normal, however if it is sparking all the time, them something is off. Sparks are caused by gaps between 2 electrical connections where it jumps the gap or shorts the positive to negative. Could be a loose wire, or pinched wire, loose track connections or things like that. Would need more information on exactly when and where it sparks.
These new trains are nice, but man that’s a lot of weight that poor little bark shire is pulling. I had a lionchief plus engine, & it broke in less than 15minutes. Time will tell how that engine holds up.
What number is this polar express because I want to purchase it but I notice there are so many different ones. There is one at Lionel right now is that the one you have?
The one in the video is 684328. They also have 2023140 which is the same except one of the coach cars is switched out for the Hobo car. Otherwise the same. You want any set with Lionchief in the name. The "ready to play" set is the battery operated one. The HO set is obviously the smaller HO scale version.

I don't use the power supply that came with it because I have a large permanent layout powered by transformers. But you certainly should have no issue with using the power supply and adding on 6-10 extra tracks.

Not to be rude but get rid of the ho set it breaks very easy, is hard to put on the tracks, and the chuff is not synced into the wheels

12:12 That’s not Billy. Billy isn’t the main boy, he’s the little boy who is poor and sits in the observation carriage away from the other kids.
Yes, it was a flub while making video and it is stated in the main description of this video above.
Great review Sean. I love the Polar Express set, it's lots of fun. The Polar Express looks great on your layout. I'm a huge fan of your layout. Al
