The real trick to being lazy is to know when and where to invest your time. I used to say you should always give 0.5 craps. At a quick glance people will round up and say you gave a crap, but you didn’t actually
A few suggestions: * For a circular hole, try a hole saw bit and a drill. Takes a couple of seconds and gives you a very clean hole of a very consistent size. You do need a hole saw in the right diameter, but they come in many sizes. For foam, get the cheapest you can find; Harbor Freight is a good source. * For water effects, acrylic gloss medium works pretty well. And if you want to change the consistency, mix in a bit of airbrush medium (to thin the medium) or gel medium (to thicken it). * Right before you pour your water effect (whatever kind), wet the surface. This will allow the fluid to level much more quickly and flow more easily into gaps. (With an acrylic, you can do this with water or isopropyl alcohol, if you use an epoxy, you'll need a fluid that doesn't interact negatively with the components.)
Love the UDT videos. I get a kick out of the fact that you take the time to remind everyone that you don't run a gridded game in every UDT video. These are amazing tips and I am definitely going to try to recreate your terrain!
3 years later and this is my go to video for creating sewer tiles. So simple and so good looking. As much as I like the over the top theatrical projects you can find on youtube I just can't find them practical. I can't be bothered to put LED lights and magnets in my tiles lmao. Thank you for showing the water texture product. I didn't even know that existed!!
Glad to see you watch BMC as well. Jeremy was responsible for me realizing I had what it took to make my own terrain, and I have been a crafting machine over the last year.
Very good video once again professor! Inspired by your work especially how simple you try to make items. I really like the wall sections and the UDT in general. Keep rolling 20’s and watch out for that lurking troll.
I love it! I have been working on a "River in a field" UDT. I was worried about making the river with resin. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
Fantastic build Professor! Creative and fun! I had the pleasure of playing in a DM Scotty game while at MACE in November- the game used lots of centers table terrain and miniatures- I now find that I feel cheated when I play a game with a DM using “theatre of the mind” instead of putting in the effort to create cool and easily constructed terrain pieces - you and your channel are truly raising the bar in table top games!
If I was going to run a game ever again, I would certainly make up several of your ultimate terrain pieces to use with the minis. I like them so much better than battlemats.
If it’s not already been mentioned. With the thicker 1” foam, I believe you could essentially create a double sided terrain board, one sewer the otherside non-sewer.
Simple way to quickly find the exact center of a circle: 1. Pick 2 random dots on the edge of the circle. 2. Connect the two dots. 3. Draw two lines perpendicular (get a square, or something with a 90 degree angle) to the one you just drew, going through the same dots. 4. Connect the two points on those two lines that intersect with the edge of the circle 5. You now have an inscribed rectangle! Just connect the diagonal corners and where they intersect in the middle (if done correctly), is the middle of your circle.
Great build Prof, I have a giant rat Diorama he's breaking out of a rusty old sewer pipe that's surrounded by crumbling walls it would look terrific on something like this. it was all made out of cheap stuff too, the pipe was a cocktail stick holder, the bent bars where hes breaking through made from 2 mm florist wire. the walls made of cheap foam that cost me zero. The rat was a toy plastic Halloween rat that I painted up and my water was some cheap epoxy resin glue from the pound store ( the UK equivalent of the dollar store only not as good.) all the paints I used were craft paints. I think the most expensive thing I used on it was a tiny bit of modelling paste to simulate foaming water. As I say it looks really good but in a setting like this it would really give players something to worry about and I think it would look even better than just hanging around as a weird decoration (in my kitchen no less!) This is something I may definitely have a go at after the next two projects I'm working on are built. I'm very inspired
Joe-A-khe-RO is a type of smart orangutan that is sort of like a mechanic and they repair the beat up vehicles of the imperial guard, it is also covered in bright orange fur
I plan too--but much is up to viewers like you. This video has 26% views less than my average videos and took a lot more effort to make. So if you like the crafting videos, share the hell out of them. Cheers!
@@DUNGEONCRAFT1 I do have a question. How do you decide which craft to make ? Right now I've got two ideas 1 a walled city with giants heads on spikes or 2 a cavernous I'm making in the Wyloch style. How do you decide which craft to make for your players.
Finding the center of a circle is easy when you make 3 chords and then draw lines to the center from the midpoint of those chords. The center is the intersection point of those perpendicular lines.
Cool! Atlantis is my go-to pen as well. I'm planning to try a modular sewer set using a pocket torch to melt out the low septic channel. I've seen the technique used to create streams or rivers.
This is great. I guess I wont be needing the old sewer tiles I made from your earlier video!... That is now two things that I had to throw away due to you coming up with a better alternative!
Looks like i have a new Dungeon Terrain to build. Have the materials, time to. Build. 1inch xps the best for deeper channel's. Great job and as allways may all your rolls ever be 20!
Really awesome! Looks so cool! I don’t use terrain unfortunately because I have been banished to playing online, but if I did, I would definitely be using these. As a side note, there is definitely something “BobRossesque” about the quality of your crafting videos. Please keep them coming!
I appreciate the video so have you thought about doing a zone UDT in the store? Your center circle could be stone, The barrier between your melee and ranged could be the sewer water, about an inch and a half thick. Then you're distant... Just trying to come by and see your great ideas.
Thanks for your interest .It's a cool idea but I wouldn't be able to carve the sewer channel in a circle. If you can figure out how to do it I'de love too see you post it in the DungeonCraft FB group!
If you want to draw a circle on some foam, tie some string to a pencil, pin the string to the foam , pull it taunt and draw a circle with the string taught; Then you have a perfect circle with a whole in the centre Or, if you don’t want to poke a whole in the middle of your foam, instead of drawing it straight on the foam, make a paper template first and then mark the foam accordingly

For water texture, would Elmer's clear pva glue suffice? I intend to apply it in much the same way as the vellejo, and then seal it in a coat of high gloss clear spray.
NO! It's shit. It does not dry properly. On one prototype I didn't dry after 4 days! I think it's primarily made for making "slime" not actually gluing anything. Spring for the water texture, Steve!
It looks great. But wouldn't it be easier and thriftier to just make sewer terrain pieces and use your normal piece of UDT. Maybe with cardstock sewer channels.
For someone who labels himself a "Lazy Dungeonmaster" you're quite crafty and engaged, Professor.
Thanks. I AM lazy, though. Just efficient.

Loved the longer video. Great job!
Views are down but audience retention is higher. You'll probably see longer videos in the future.
Finally got all the carving done.. took 2 days and my arm is dead but it looks sooo coool!! Thanks for the tutorial!!
You're welcome! Happy playing in the sewers!
You could probably do something similar to make a fighting pit, with the channel carrying away blood instead of the other human byproducts.
Fighting pit UDT?! Hmmm.........
yes... fighting pit

Soldering irons work well for cutting holes in thinner foams.
Very true.
you can use clear non yellowing caulk as a alternative for the sewage

Roll initiative, knave!
It's OKAY. Everything helps feed the algorithm.
I was thinking for making the curve/flair for the wall, instead of using the knife, just use the pill bottle and some sand paper to make the indent.
You can get a heat gun at Harbor Freight for $10 that will give the same effect as the primer.
Try it and post on the FB group. I'd love for that to be true.

yes. I'll do it momentarily.

My other UDT thumbnails had arrows and they hit 15k views each, so the arrow returned.
