Especially considering the shift to left and right is nothing unusually in western politics.
We always see the same pattern, a left party gets into power, they promise a lot, under deliver and a few years to a decade or so later, the voting public have had enough of them and then end up voting for an alternative to the right, rinse and repeat and this happens every few elections, it's even more the case in countries like the UK and US where it's always swinging from left to right all the time lol.
In the end, it doesn't really matter which side is in power, not much changes overall and this merry-go-round continues with the hope that real change that benefits the people will happen, which is highly unlikely regardless of left or right of politics, and in the end, they will tell us what they think we want to hear, not what they can deliver.
So in the case of Europe, there's a shift towards the right, that will probably last 2 or 3 elections before people get fed up with them because they talk a lot but under deliver and then the eventually swing back to the left happens, it's kinda old news and so predictable now.

@@Letsthinkaboutit-mb7nnThey were. But Europe/the EU is pro-democracy, and therefore, must follow the will of the people, and the people's will is clearly leaning towards anti-immigration. If they feel that they are unrepresented, then they will follow people who do represent their beliefs. It's as much a failure and an indictment of the institutions of the EU as it is an indication for the attractiveness of far-right nationalism. Simply put, if the EU had addressed these issues, it wouldn't need to worry about the rise of parties like AfD. It was only about a decade ago where parties like the AfD, and their beliefs, were seen as too fringe to ever be a threat to the institutions of the EU. Obviously, that judgement was wrong, and their lethargic response to the growth in anti-immigrant beliefs within the wider EU is pretty demonstrable. Sure, they've tried to reduce the asylum seeker intake, and share the burden, but anti-immigrant sentiment within the EU goes beyond just asylum seekers. I think tourism is one of the major examples that goes mostly unacknowledged within the EU as contributing to such sentiment.

With europe's low fertility rates, it has become apparent that, immigration (legally) is essential for ensuring the continued growth of european economies. Moreover, with economic protectionism on the rise in the us and china , and globalism decreasing in popularity, Europe cannot afford to lose it's biggest companies in many industries (e.g: the car industry) to the US and China, therefore your standards of living will deteriorate.
