🎓 Learn how to create seamless patterns on your iPad in my online course, Floral Patterns in Procreate! 👉 learn.every-tuesday.com/procr...
Photoshop’s pattern preview has been out for a little while, but I've been using it with Procreate a lot recently and I’ve gotta say - even though it has a few drawbacks (which we’ll discuss), it’s honestly pretty great. When you pair it with Procreate, you can use any art you make on your iPad and then just manipulate things around to get an idea quickly of how you’d like your pattern to look. It’s also very beginner friendly, so there’s no need to be a wiz at Photoshop to take advantage of it! Once your pattern is complete, you can either keep it in Photoshop, or recreate the pattern in Procreate using the Photoshop version as a guide.
Even if you’re not a Photoshop user, it’s a handy tool to be aware of, especially if you’re exploring surface pattern design for profit or pleasure!

This is my preferred way to make patterns! 😊 I use a solid color adjustment layer for the background so I can change the color quickly.

I mostly do all my patterns in Photoshop due to my art style and process :) . I managed to develop a couple of tricks that help me to do half-drop patterns and to change my background easily as well as save my swatch square. For the background, I just add a new layer that I put at the bottom and add the effect of "solid color". To save my swatch I just do it directly while I'm in pattern preview and it's done without losing any elements. For the half-drop I use a diamond shape to help me position my elements and then repeated that on one of the corners. thanks for your videos!

I prefer to work with a pattern adjustment layer from the layers panel instead of using a layer style. If you do a pattern adjustment layer it’s way less clicks over all. Especially if you want to change the pattern or the scale. That’s my recommendation over using a layer style.

thanks for this video! I never used the smart object feature and this really helped a lot! So, to deal with the problem of making half drop repeats, I imported the file from photoshop into illustrator, and it retained the layers and I was able to turn them into smart objects in illustrator and then from there make the repeat, half drop and fully editable. I am using illustrator for the IPad, but I think illustrator for the computer has even more features and should work just as well. Next I am going to try to import the file directly from Procreate into illustrator, since I had to redo the smart object step in illustrator, so maybe I can skip photoshop altogether.
I'll keep you posted, if you want. Thanks again for sharing all your knowledge!!

Ok, it seems like the photoshop step in between is needed because i can't turn the layers into smart objects directly in illustrators. But after that, it works fine!

Thanks for sharing these Teela! That's cool that Procreate allows exporting art into PSD files. Liking the new videography style and backdrop with your art supplies and confidence. Too bad exiting preview mode deletes some objects.

Thank you for this! I was thinking all the limitations you described were attributed to something i was doing wrong! I’m so glad you told us half drops aren’t possible! I’ve been struggling to figure out why I couldn’t get it!

Thank you, Teela! I am slowly learning how to use the scary Adobe programs )))
I have a question and hope you would be able to answer - what computer do you use, what specs? My HP laptop is not powerful enough to support Adobe CC and I am looking for an update (either Apple or PC).

Sure - I use a base model Macbook Air (M1) and I have a Mac Studio that's more decked out for video editing, but I couldn't be happier with how the Macbook Air has worked for me!
