  • Breakdown & Analysis of The Schultz Choke or Schultz Front headlock position named after the legendary Dave Schultz. The submission can come on quickly, and even if it doesn't, it turns the front headlock into a punishing position that helps to open up go behinds, breakdowns and pins. The Schultz Choke also flows together nicely as an Anaconda Choke setup as it encourages your opponent to roll and pin themselves.

This was the first move I learned in my only season of HS wrestling that I actually got reasonably proficient with. Pinned my first two opponents with a snap down to front head & arm, Schultz choke to nearside cradle. After the first two kids got put out, refs started calling me for using a potentially dangerous hold, so I had to learn other stuff.

Craig Jones taught it in one of his seminar, he was using both palms facing toward self kind of grip but the idea is the same.

SB, will you please consider doing a Jens Pulver breakdown focusing on his takedown defense? Back in the day, him and Chuck Liddell are the two well-known guys who likes to "Sprawl and Brawl." Liddell's still stuck up in people's memory due to his numerous high-profile fights but Pulver, especially with the younger fans, is slightly spiraling down to obscurity. There isn't any video of him defending a takedown on all of the internet and he's barely, if not never, being talked about in forums/threads when they're counting out fighters with really good takedown defense.

I’m right leg and handed dominant, yet it seems more natural to do it to the other side is that okay? Is there a reason everyone seems to do it to the right side?

The position is but the choke is not. So no doubt a grey line exists between them.
