  • What sparked the protests and the political crisis in Hong Kong?
    Hundreds of thousands of people in Hong Kong have continued to protest in the streets since demonstrations began in June 2019.
    The protests started as an outcry over an extradition bill and have reawakened Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement.
    Hong Kong’s leaders are demanding big changes to the way the autonomous region is run and some want to stop it fully reuniting with China in 2047.
    So how did we get here? This episode of Start Here explains why one extradition bill triggered an unprecedented political crisis.

    One of the first times the western or English speaking media has addressed the catalytic murder case in Taiwan...

    • @Fai2012
      @Fai2012 4 года назад +7

      Even that is too short of a summary. Taiwan played a role in this protest by not cooperating with the drafting of the extradition bill, while calling for justice to be brought to the family. Then when the murderer wanted to turn himself in to Taiwan after serving his sentence in Hong Kong, Taiwan also rejected. Of course, Taiwan president got pounded for that.

      @@Fai2012 Stop spreading lies. Taiwan government were willing to provide the evidence to the Hong Kong government so that the murderer can be trialed in Hong Kong, but the Hong Kong government refused. There are also other suggestions to transfer the murderer to Taiwan such as case-by-case extradition bill approved not by the HK Cheif Executive, but by the Legco, or the HK gov could add a Sunset Clause into the extradition bill. All these suggestions were proposed by lawers or legislators, but Carrie Lam rejected all those suggestions and chose the most controversial one, which obviously because China wants to take more control on HK. Furthermore, Taiwan gov didn't reject to take the murderer. It's the murderer dicided to stay in Hong Kong after releasing from jail. Please check the facts first!

      As much as I appreciate the video host's attempt to give an objective report about the Hong Kong protest, I found her report to be inadequate if not biased against the protesters due to ignorance as can be seen from the missing of crucial events which explain why the Hong Kong people are justified to hold massive protests against the Hong Kong police and communist China.

    So much pro democracy! Did she know that we weren't even allowed to vote for a village representative before 1997. All the District councillors and the legislature were appointed by the government until just before Britain had to return Hongkong to China, because the 99 years lease of the new territories were going to expire , from 1898 to 1997, and that there's no way to perpetuate the colonial rule of the Hongkong Island under the mighty Chinese Army. Britain did not "give" Hongkong back to China, she was forced to return Hongkong back to China, which was stolen through the evil opium war. By the way. Where has the pro democracy Arab Spring led those countries to ? Dead bodies floating on the Mediterranean sea, or refugees flooding into Europe or both?

      Problem is, the protesters already tried a peaceful protest. The umbrella movement was mostly peaceful. The first few months of the 2019 protests were peaceful to an extent, before descending into violence. Carrie Lam was supposed to listen to the people and help provide leeway, instead of ordering to police to attack the public again and again. Remember Quebec, and how the French Canadians had their wishes honored? How Canada now teaches French in schools and how the government tried their best to mend the bridge between the French and English Canadians?
      You do understand that Carrie Lam, as well as any world leader, have the power to stop protests peacefully? However, she chose to ignore her citizens and persistently degrade protesters instead. Now, Hong Kong is now in chaos and it is her fault entirely. China cannot blame the US forever. They have to find a peaceful way to solve this delicate problem because at this rate, Hong Kong will be a burnt-out shell with countless lives being lost for absolutely no good reason.

    According to sino British joint declaration and Hong Kong basic law, article 5
    Quote, "the capitalist economy system and way of life shall remain unchange for 50 years"
    Which after considered as "one country two systems"
    However, this article does not, or we can say never promise that other thing shall remain unchanged, someone really delivered the wrong messages to the public.
    And this someone is Hong Kong media, Hong Kong media published negative information to the public for very long time.
    Please tell me, if it is true that China doesn't allow Hong Kong has freedom of expressions, how come this kind of media still exit?
    And I also found this,
    1st, extradition bill exist since British ruling period
    2nd, high judges of Hong Kong are actually British
    3rd, Hong Kong basic law article 45, quote "chef executive has power to provide exception to realise or reduce the punishment by the court" which proves the protestors were lying the public how this bill works.

    • @MrTomchan1201
      @MrTomchan1201 4 года назад

      @Bofang Guan well said.
      Indeed, Article 5 in the Hong Kong Basic Law stated: "The socialist system and policies shall not be practised in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, and the previous capitalist system and way of life shall remain unchanged for 50 years." Here, one can dispute the definition of "socialist system" and "capitalist system", whether they are purely economic systems or social and political systems included. In Hong Kong, people takes it as economic, social and political systems together. And in recent years, as mentioned in the video, there have been a number of cases where the HK government was trying to implement certain laws and policies that HK people considered as "biased to the mainland Chinese government". That's why there have been an increasing number of protests in recent years, including the Anti-Article 23 protest in 2003, Anti-National Education protest in 2012, Anti-Political Reform protest (i.e. Umbrella Movement) in 2014.
      Also, it may be taking a part for the whole to say that Hong Kong media published negative information to the public for a very long time. In general, there are pro-Beijing media like TaKungPao and pan-democratic media like ApplyDaily, and they report news in their own fashion and perspective. After all, I reckon that the news they reported is still legit, just from different perspectives, so it may be overgeneralized to say that they are publishing negative information all the time. (Plus, I'm quite negative towards HK now tbh)
      For the extradition bill, yes it is actually still existing in Hong Kong's law, just not with mainland China or Taiwan. Probably because of the differences in the legal foundation (common law vs continental law), I'm not entirely sure. (anyone with legal background can support info here?). And now, when the government is trying to solve the murder case thingy with Taiwan, Carrie Lam involved mainland China in this case. Let's put it this way, if the government really wants to solve the problem, they would have just propose the bill with extradition to Taiwan only, wouldn't they?
      For the high judges, do you mean the judges in general or the Chief Justice of the Court of Final Appeal? The Chief Justice of the Court of Final Appeal is Chinese citizen for sure (as bounded by Article 90 of HKBL). And although courts could make political judgements, they are supposed to be impartial and not affected or influenced by politics.
      For the Chief Executive's power of amnesty, I assumed you meant Article 48(12) lol. I don't see the point why this is related to the bill. People are asking for amnesty for the suspects arrested in the protests throughout the movement, and that is one of the power that the CE can exercise. Whether she should or should not exercise is another story, but this is not related to the extradition bill imo.
      Also another note to Al Jezeera, well done to compiling the key to the events in HK. Yet, I would like to raise a point that as shown in the 5 demands, none of them is asking for independence. Yes there has been a few cases mentioning independence, but that is definitely not shared by the majority in HK. At this moment, the major cause for people to go to the street is police brutality, in which over 15,000 tear gas rounds, over 10,000 rubber bullets together with a few live-rounds has been shot by the police. They are not following their guidelines. People interested can take a look at other sources.

      @@sandra.gathmann I’m not sure how it’s not relevant when the protestors themselves have to yell “I will not commit suicide” when they’re being arrested. Not sure where you’re from but this doesn’t happen in any other country that I know of.

      @@aznkamikazee you know what - I misread what you said. I thought you were talking about people committing suicide over organ harvesting. My apologies. As for the protest suicides - indeed it's part of the story, and we didn't exclude those figures for any other reasons apart from..we simply took the decision the most news orgs took of tallying deaths resulting from direct confrontation between protests and police.

    Hong Kong people have never experienced the Cultural Revolution before, nor have they experienced suffering. It seems that Hong Kong people appreciate this chaos very much, so they are now starting to create their own riots.

    The only wrong things in this video are 2:30, Hong Kong wasn't a part of China, in fact, Hong Kong is never a part of the PRC, Hong Kong was part of the Qing dynasty. in 1997 Britain was "gave" Hong Kong to PRC but not gave "back" to PRC.
    In personification, CCP killed Qing and take everything from his dead body, but that time HK(Hong Kong Island and Kowloon) is already a part of Britain by the "Treaty of Nanking" and "Convention of Peking", New Territories was Britain from Qing for 99 years.

      VampireJoe interesting. From where did the ‘great British’ take away the HK? Qing dynasty. And Qing dynasty is the history of China and part of China. If u thought HK belonged to Britain just because of Britain ‘killed’ Qing, then u are justifying the war crime. Whatever u robed from the other countries by war belonged to u. U should be ashamed. U disrespected all the heroes died for the war, for the justice, for the peace. Whats the difference between u and fascist. U r on their side.

    I only went home from Hong Kong last month.
    However, the Chinese People's Liberation Army did not intervene in the riots in Hong Kong, except for cleaning up garbage on the roads after the riots and helping to clear roadblocks set by the rioters to restore traffic.
    Some people misunderstand China and CCP too deeply.
