Regarding taxes, our sales tax @ 6% and income taxes at 4.05% (flat rate) , (unless your city hits you!) are pretty much middle of the national pack. The property tax, especially if you buy in a city are brutal. It isn't uncommon for new buyers to be paying 1.5% - 2% of their home's value! Most folks don't realize what they even pay. Townships tend to have much lower rates than the cities and or villiages! Check before you buy (based on price you are paying!!!!)!
I would also like to hear more about the diversity of the state. I am black and my husband is white, and we moved from central MA to Raleigh NC to find a higher density of diverse culture. We’ve been eyeing Michigan as our next adventure because my MIL grew up in Monroe and visits twice a year from MA, but I worry about moving back to a predominantly white area. I’m sure it isn’t as diverse as Raleigh but would love to hear some discussion about it.
