    This happened to our family when I was in 4th grade. The cost was almost double the quote. My parents could not afford the new cost. Then the company charged crazy interest for every day they could not pay. Eventually the moving company auctioned off our stuff to pay the bill. We lost everything. All we had left is what we had in the car when we drove across country.
    Pictures, family momentos, all gone. My parent asked if they could pay a partial amount to reclaim photos and such that were worth nothing at auction but were priceless to us. They refused.
    This is not just an issue of money. The emotional impact stayed with my siblings and I our whole lives.
    Our only photos of our parents wedding or our baby pictures are ones that extended family members shared with us. I am 45 and to this day, anything of emotional value travels in my car with me when moving.
    These companies need to be held accountable for this scam.

      If you’re ever in this situation again and you can’t afford the new bill try to get information on the auction and have a friend or a family member place a bid on your stuff 99% chance no one else is really bidding on household items so you can get your stuff back Cheaper than the original bill they try to stick you with. I’m sorry to hear about this, as a professional mover it pisses me off.

    I think Japanese moving company will be very welcome here

    • @BewareTheLilyOfTheValley
      @BewareTheLilyOfTheValley 3 года назад +10

      I watched a RUclipsr who also used a Japanese company and holy hell, movers, TAKE NOTE! They even still respect the rule of no shoes indoors, meaning they take the time to remove their shoes every single time they come in, and put them back on when they go out. What they do is pack up everything for you, if it's not already been boxed (which that's fine if it hasn't, just be courteous and pack glassware and fragile knicknacks yourself since those can take time), then put everything by the door, then move it. A few people remain indoors with shoes off, then some are outside with shoes on and they pass the items down an orderly line.
      Should someone from the outside need to come in, or should they be short-handed, those shoes still are coming off to protect the floor when they enter. Same when they deliver the items. It was fantastic watching them go. But western culture doesn't have that same level of care, because that's exactly it, it's a cultural thing to be that courteous.

      When you're just estimating the weight it's really really difficult. I'm not saying this one was okay (cause it was way way off) but it's impossible to estimate completely accurately. If we weigh every item then the move time would be much longer, which would cost much more money. So it's a delicate balance that's a lot more difficult than it sounds.

    One time when me and my mom moved (I live in the States), we hired a pretty reputable moving company in our area. First off, the lead guy thought he was God, second they misplaced my deceased father's tools (many were antique and cannot be replaced), and we had lingerie missing, shoes gone and the list goes on. The company were not helpful at all. They said we signed an agreement that states "We will not be held responsible for lost or STOLEN items!" That should've been a big red flag. I asked them if they made it a habit to steal items and that's why they put it in the moving agreement. They couldn't answer me
    Lesson learned.

Pack my stuff, rent a truck, load it up, take it to a weigh station, then to the shipping yard (which only allows shipping companies into the dockyard), rent a partial sea container (from who?), move all my furniture and boxes into a container, drive the ship across the Atlantic Ocean, etc...
      People hire moving companies for a variety of reasons, often because they cannot do it themselves due to the logistics of necessary steps. This does not make them lazy or snowflakes. And, moving customers should be able to have a fair and honest transaction with the moving service provider plus a means for recourse if the company scams customers.

    I worked for a "mom and pop" moving company for several years. They had an outstanding reputation that they worked hard to keep. Errors can be to the benefit of the customer if youre working with a honest moving company. For instance if you have a "binding with weight credit" contract with the company, there is the possibility of getting a partial refund if the actual weight ends up being less than what was estimated. This is something you should ask your mover about before signing the contract.

    The last time I moved 10 years ago , I rented a large cube van with a hydraulic lift on the back for the appliances , tools and furniture etc .
    I hired 3 buddies for One Day just to carry the stuff out and then in . As I already had things all packed up . I paid them each $100.00 CASH , a wide variety and Plenty of food and COLD bottled water through that Sept. day , and Plenty of booze - when we were all finished .
    Then I drove them all home as to them drinking . They were paid hundreds of times over the years before this as they were weekly eating and drinking at my shop and in my home before and after that . = I Never want to Feel I Owe Anybody . . .
    I'll Bet I've Helped 40 people move over the years and Esp. with immediate family - and it was Always For Free . . . Hmmm , now that I'm reminded - Where was My Family that Saturday ???

    I feel fortunate that my dad has a big trailer and a pickup truck that he used to help me move when we bought a house last year. we were moving only one town over, and my parents let us store all our things in their garage until moving day. My dad's "price" for all that was that we BBQ him up something tasty before the move, which we did. made a family gathering out of it. it was great.

    We moved from Winnipeg to Calgary in early 1999. The moving company we hired tried to extort more money at the moment they showed up to move us. Said we had a lot more stuff then they thought we would. They then said the truck was too small to fit everything and needed more money (not sure how paying more money would suddenly make the truck larger). We had less than a one bedroom apartment worth of stuff. It was me my wife and infant daughter. I refused to fall for it and paid NO extra. So guess what ? Our stuff took a week to get to Calgary. A 12 hour trip took 7 days all of a sudden. They said the truck “broke down in Regina”. To this day I still call bullshit on that. I complained and got nowhere of course.

    I am a mover and it makes me sad that stuff like this is happening. I charge usually by the mile and time it take to unload. That way there is no confusion. I input the address of pick up and drop off show it to the customer and charge them based on that and the trailer size I use plus time it takes to load. I 1 bedroom move to Las Vegas I usually do it for 650 to 800 depending on boxes and bed sizes.

    I moved from Switzerland to London UK and had an estimate for that in cubic meters. After they packed everything up it was nearly double the size and so was the price, obviously. When I unpacked in the UK I found, that they had individually wrapped pencils, burned-down candles, tea lights and even 8 paper clips. The amount of paper was atrocious! No wonder the volume of the cargo changed that much. And no wonder they couldn’t finish their job in a whole day’s work. They were two guys and I lived in a 1 bedroom flat! 1 bedroom, 1 living room, 1 kitchen, 1 bathroom. I packed the rest over night.

    Definition of ESTIMATE = roughly calculate or judge the value, number, quantity, or extent of.
    So yeah it's an estimate...estimates change, thought that was common knowledge. If they want something exact they should have someone come out, examine and take an item list and box count. After doing so they can sign an agreement to move those EXACT items for an EXACT price

    • @devonwillis7625
      @devonwillis7625 4 года назад +1

    • @emersonpropst2886
      @emersonpropst2886 4 года назад

      The problem in the two cases we were shown weren't with estimates going up, it was with a flat out markup in the weight. I agree people should understand that the estimate may be higher or lower depending on specifics (I have had both happen with reputable movers), but claiming something weighed more than it really did *is* a major problem and shouldn't happen.

  • @timcampbell343

    There are two important terms that moving customers need to know. Broker, and Carrier.
    A broker is someone who does not perform the move. They merely take your money and then sell the job to an actual moving company that works with the broker's scam. The new company that now owns your job is the carrier, and they will ALWAYS hit you up for more charges because that's how they make their money.
    The main questions that must be asked over the phone is: " Are you a broker, or are you the actual carrier who will perform the move ? "
    If they claim they are the carrier who perform the move, the next question is : Okay, is your company logo on the truck that will be coming out ?
    If they say no, remember their name, tell them no thanks, and call someone else.
    Even then, you're not 100% safe. I asked a company who told me they were NOT a broker. They sent me a quote to my email. When I read the quote, I checked their disclaimer which is all that fine print at the bottom that very few read, and it stated that they ARE A BROKER.
    I called the same guy back and he denied telling me he was the actual carrier. I told him he is a liar because I would have never given him my email address if I knew he was a broker.
    THE BOTTOM LINE IS READ THE COMPANY DISCLAIMER THAT IS SENT WITH THE QUOTE, AND NEVER DO BUSINESS WITH A BROKER.
    An honest Carrier is a company who will come to your home and look at everything you want to move, and give you a written and binding quote that cannot increase once they deliver your items to the destination. Also, an honest carrier company will always take a credit card, while the others insist on cash, or a postal money order.

    Good job, keep these investigations coming. As newcomers we were also scammed by one of these companies. They showed up late, took as long as they could to load the truck (even though we had everything ready and outside and helped loading the truck, then they refused to unload unless we paid first and what we were charged was double what we were told. We ended up paying because we were scared and they just dropped everything in the curb and left. They broke some of the furniture in the process and then they staid in the driveway for half an hour . That was quite frightening, we didn't know what they were doing.

      Scarlett WhispererASMR There are UHaul companies all throughout America. You just return the truck or trailer to the nearest one. You'll notice the trucks & trailers usually always have out of state tags. Its one whole company.
      I didn't know how it worked til I moved from TX to WV.

      I had a nightmare moving with North Star Van Lines and Century Moving Services. I created a group on Facebook to share my experience. Please join and share this group to stop these scams. Look through North Star Van Lines.

      That's because Arizona is where the U-Haul headquarter located and where they build/modify the vehicles.

    Logically, if 2000 pounds was 1,100 dollars, then 6000 pounds would not be 2,700 dollars.
    They randomly just added prices.

    In Australia we have AFRA, using a non-member company to move is a surefire disaster.
    We also charge by volume, not weight.

    Tandem moving is the worst company. They have no hand trucks, charge you once arrived and it takes them 20 minutes just to open the truck. They give you no reciept and claim everything needs to be packed because of the bed bugs risk even though on the website it says clean blankets. The rudest and slowest movers ever.

    When I moved back from Japan a moving company sent a guy to measure the stuff in our apartment and gave us a ridiculous quote based on their "size" estimation. I went and remeasured every item to be sent home and my measurements were half of their estimate. They had no choice but to cut the price in half.

    I hired a mover once when I was relocated by my company. The mover quoted $2000. When they moved everything over, the charges became $6000. If it wasn't my company that paid for the entirety of the moving costs, I would have sued the movers.

    I've worked in the industry 18+ years, most customer gripes come from things you have tried to explain to them prior to the move, their neglect to read all of the required paperwork before signing, and their general "know it all" attitude, they know more then me even after 18 years of doing this (?)....those that actually listen to moving coordinators like me, fare well ...and when you go with the 'cheapest' mover because you are only looking at price and not all of the services, you get what you pay for

    I'm in the U.S. I was getting quotes about hiring movers for an appx 1500 mile move. One company gave a super low quote. At first I was excited, but then I looked into it further and they can increase the price as much as necessary dependent on the weight. Instead I will be packing it myself into a U-Pack because it is measured by the length of the trailer needed, not by the weight. This shows me that I made a good choice and doing it myself will save me hundreds if not thousands of dollars.
