Not to be overly negative but as a veteran with an amputated leg I find that the TSA gives undue attention to disabled persons. I just returned from a trip 2 days ago. TSA in Atlanta detained me for over half an hour because it was inconvenient for them to process my manual wheelchair and a walker. Every time we travel which is frequently we are given undue attention as compared to non-disabled travelers. That said the airlines are VERY ACCOMMODATING!!! TSA you have a lot to learn!!! Disabled people are most likely NOT terrorists and more likely just tourists!

Nice they have the right to travel alone there, here we have to bring a caregiver because it is the law here for every flight, that a disabled person múst be accompanied by a caregiver
No kidding! We just traveled through Denver, and the TSA was very commanding but opaque in their orders to my partner. My partner also got the most intense and thorough inspection they'd ever gone through with TSA. What gives? Are the tubes of the scooter frame filled with explosives? Did TSA get some kind of hint that the scooter or my partner's braces were dangerous? It's all very silly and controlling. And as you say, the airlines have always been very accommodating, and are so nice to both of us.
I respect your opinion, but as a disabled passenger myself, I am fully aware that travelling with a wheelchair and walker will take more time to inspect. They have a job to do and just because we're disabled does not mean we're exempt from being subject to security measures like everyone else.
@@MobilityDirect I'm guessing the work is related to the trade show because the process of taking the scooter with him on the plane looked pretty straightforward to me. Just the correct tagging, notifications to airline staff, seems the only thing that deviated from flying without one. I can definitely see where knowing you'll have your machine as you disembark the plane would be a huge relief for many people. He highlighted that exceptionally well here. Something most people are too busy to do I might add 😆

thank you for the informative video. about me, I live in the Netherlands and am 70 years old. There is also a rule handicapped people must travel. A few remarks. you are younger than me and your arms are still strong. I travel with an ATTO mobility scooter, it's foldable like a trolley. we are not allowed to take it in the airplane. Of course, it has a removable battery and I took all the necessary papers with it. for the scooter, i have a protective cover. we get help and travel in the airport with a special vehicle. I did travel to Spain where everything was very good from and back to our big National Airport of Schiphol. sad to say but on Schiphol a lot went wrong. the attachment clips of the cover were broken and as we landed at 11.30 pm. the promised service was not available. no help from Schiphol, only from other passengers in the airport. I will never do it again. good luck to all other handicapped persons.
Thank you so much for your videos. I'm in the UK but have gained so much knowledge from your clearcut, experience-based videos that are not the usual 'buy this'. Thank you so much for your video. It was a blessing to me to see how easy it was to used the scooter in the airport and your airplane fly. Thank you and be bless again. 🙏🇺🇸😊
Thanks for showing us that experience. I have the golden buzzaround xl-hd. It comes apart in pieces. How would the crew take it to the baggage area on the plane? Disassembled? I would be afraid of damage to the vehicle. They wouldn’t be able to carry it in one piece. I like the collapsible basket. I went to a Dr appointment yesterday needing to use elevators. I found that the doors closed too fast for me to get my scooter inside. How do you handle that? You don’t have the arm extension to reach much beyond the scooter to hold open the door. You would think a Drs office would consider handicapped vehicles and have the elevators and automatic hallway doors stay open longer. I would either have to back in or back out of the elevator as there wasn’t much room to turn around in the elevator . Easy way to damage scooter getting caught in closing doors. There wasn’t always much room to maneuver a scooter around in exam areas. There is still. Long ways to go for accessibility for handicapped people.
Typically there isn't enough time to show the air line attendance. How to take the scooter apart. But if there is, I would always recommend showing them how to at least remove the seat and the batteries. This way it's a lot lighter for them to carry and easier to transport.
Wow, thank you so much for putting the time in to make this video for using a mobility scooter in an airport for travel. I’ve been doing my research and came across your website and scooters. Looking for a travel friendly scooter I can take apart and put in car as well as one I can take to airport for travel. I guess I was under the impression I wouldn’t have to remove the battery, just concerned with carrying a purse, and possibly a carry on luggage plus battery it may be to much for me traveling by myself. I still plan on buying one from your company very soon, most likely tomorrow! Thank you again for caring so much for the disabled community as it’s not easy getting around like I used to before car accident caused severe injuries to both ankles over 3 yrs ago. ❤

Thank you so much for taking the time and expense to make this video, it is very helpful. The only issue I have is, your easy walk from the end of the jet-way to your seat on the airplane. What if (in my case) you are not able to walk that distance to your seat?
You should be given proper assistance if you let them know you'll need help getting to your seat. As a disabled person who traveled years ago, my experience was not the same as yours. I was belittled by the employees and treated as a second class citizen. They refused to assist me and left me to try to do things alone despite them knowing that wasn’t possible. That experience left me wanting to never fly again.
Thanks for sharing your experience with us. We know that the experience might not be the same for everyone but still hope that this video helps people what they need to know when traveling with their mobility scooter. Thanks for watching! We appreciate the support!
I appreciate the video very much, but that "fishbowl" or whatever type of lens it is that is being used for it is very distracting. It actually gave me a mild headache to watch it. I'd be very interested in seeing a video for this using the Pride Revo 2.0, as I was wondering how to use it when flying. Thank you!

A very interesting and informative video, thank you. But for those of us who do not live in America it would be helpful to see some international travel using similar equipment.
as a UK person, using a powered wheelchair, the process is exactly the same..... i fly across Europe and out to the U.S.... obviously the regulations to check are different
I found this video as we are trying to do a London/Greece trip with my father in law who has stage 4 cancer but still wants to go so we are going to try to get him a mobility scooter. Thanks for the informative video. As far as the black eye? I call bullshit! You are a brawler and we know our own! I hope you got your licks in. Great video and thank you for helping people. I love the video thanks for sharing it also I took my mom on the wheelchair to America it was a whole new experience for me never done it as a carer I had to make sure everything was checked through, the only bad experience I had when my cousin let me at the airport with forts at cases my mum in the wheelchair and no help whatsoever I was so frustrated and angry no help for many one but I'm sure over the years that has improved quite a lot hopefully one day I'll be traveling to America again to see my loved ones I want to come to America to see my nieces and nephew on Thanksgiving Day

I have an ankle brace and when I flew Southwest they had wheelchairs with guides from checkin to the gate and also on destination they had wheelchairs by the gate. I had never even considered they would allow scooters. It was a snowbird destination so there were almost 10 wheelchairs. At the destination the guide had to push 2 chairs with people but managed. I was able to stand in the scanner and had to have my shoes on so they still took a while to swab my brace. So the scanners are not that complete.
They'll probably give you assistance if you tell them that. As you see in the video, they are attentive and are easy to talk with. Thanks for watching our video and commenting.
I have an electric wheelchair and I’ve gone flying with it many times. You stay seated in the chair and they will pat you down. It will be a person putting you down of your same gender, and they are very very polite and explain to you before they touch you exactly what they’re going to do. Not a big deal. But, I would get there early if you can. Sometimes it takes a while for them to find a TSA agent of the same gender as you.
This disclaimer or final note at the bottom of the TSA page is what's worrisome: "The final decision rests with the TSA officer on whether an item is allowed through the checkpoint" It leaves it to the discretion of the TSA officer. What if the TSA at your home base allows it, but coming back home, the TSA at the other end does not?
Nobody wants to get sued. If your scooter meets the travel guidelines I would not worry. TSA does not want a lawsuit against them for discriminating against a disabled traveler.
Something to note. If you have TSA Precheck you do note have to remove your shoes, nor do you have to do the body scan machine. You walk through the metal detector. If you can walk short distances then walk through the metal detector to avoid the full body pat down. If you do not have PreCheck, I highly recommend you get it. TSA Precheck can make the TSA checkpoint process a breeze.
@@Pwaters86Thank you for that info. After watching this video, I dont believe I would want to take a mobility scooter on a plane if I had to use the regular security line, but I have TSA Pre and hoped it might be much easier.
I've taken my mobility scooter on several trips (via plane) before and it's exactly how everything has been depicted here. Everything goes pretty smooth. The most complicated part is going through TSA. Yes, you do get a pat down, it's part of how it is traveling with a mobility scooter, but I am personally fine with it. It doesn't bother me much. It's just a drawn out process.
😊 love your. Video helpful content, the only thing is the fish eye look, is there a reason why you film in this format? I have an orange suitcase as well, for the same thing.
How do you get a pouch for the battery? You took a longtime to load. Delta at Mco waited for us to load next group. You are a great reversing driver. I agree pack light. And be willing to ask other passengers for help, even when not on a scooter.

@violetrosegold Lithium batteries must be removed before gate-checking your scooter and brought on the plane with you. In this case, we did remove it. You'll see Drew removed at the 26:39 mark on the video.

I have traveled with GoGo scooters for 20 years and no problems with airlines until recently. They don't understand sealed acid batteries and give me instructions for lithium, remove it and bring it into the cabin. Suggestions?
They have to abide by the rules, if you are traveling with seal but acid batteries, you don't need to take the batteries with you on the plane. I would ask for a supervisor.

If your mobility scooter or wheelchair uses lithium-ion batteries, you must identify the watt-hours and ensure they are less than 300 watt-hours. This also includes your extra batteries.

Thank you Drew for showing us what happened when you flew with the scooter. I have one and I’d rather die than go through this. My 50 year old daughter is mentally handicapped. What she went through in the New Orleans airport in 2016 ruined her vacation. She was subjected to a very personal inspection (while in public) by a female TSA agent. I was appalled and she was embarrassed and in tears. We haven’t flown since. I can only imagine the difficulty/discrimination I would encounter now that I am using a scooter and perceived as vulnerable.
I really enjoyed this video. I use a scooter and have never flown, so this was very comforting. It may make it much more likely that I may actually travel somewhere. Thank you for that.

Well done. I travel a few times a year and there is no way those baggage handlers are getting their hands on my expensive scooter. Airlines tell you luggage is at your own risk. You will still get run over in a busy airport even on your scooter! Good luck to you!

My mother is flying alone with her new motorized wheelchair. Will she have help removing her lithium battery to carry on board? She needs an aisle chair and is immobile. Not sure if she should travel with her manual chair.

My Model is a Vive (I think). Do you sell the Lithium insert batterys that go in the battery pack, if I want to update it? If so what are the part numbers I need to order from you and how much are they?
You'll probably have to do that. There are situations when they need to be removed and in this video, we made sure that we properly let the airlines crew where the batteries are located and removed it as they can easily fall off. Every flight I’m on is different some say leave battery in some take it out. One employee told me that guidelines for new lithium ion batteries is they can safely remain in.
We have been experiencing the same thing, it doesn't seem like all of the airline attendance are following the same guidelines. My guess it's due to lack of training.
Can you request help from the airline to the gate if you have carry-on luggage or would you need to check the scooter at the counter and use a wheelchair to the gate?

Awesome 😎
Enjoy these videos learn a lot from them hello from Nicholasville Kentucky
Right on! A lot of issues to be addressed when it comes to accessibility! I have a Metro Mobility ' Max Plus' 4 wheel scooter & am very happy with it!

We also made a blog post about the travel so you'll probably learn more about it here: www.mobilityscootersdirect.com/blog/mobility-scooters/traveling-on-an-airplane-with-a-mobility-scooter/

Thank you!

as a UK person, using a powered wheelchair, the process is exactly the same..... i fly across Europe and out to the U.S.... obviously the regulations to check are different
I found this video as we are trying to do a London/Greece trip with my father in law who has stage 4 cancer but still wants to go so we are going to try to get him a mobility scooter. This would b my concern, I'm an amputee.

@freedomisfromtruth Thanks for sharing your experience and for watching our video. We appreciate the support!

As you go through TSA as an amputee do you know how they would perform the security scan of you and your chair if you aren't able to stand?
They'll probably give you assistance if you tell them that. As you see in the video, they are attentive and are easy to talk with. Thanks for watching our video and commenting.
I have an electric wheelchair and I’ve gone flying with it many times. You stay seated in the chair and they will pat you down. It will be a person putting you down of your same gender, and they are very very polite and explain to you before they touch you exactly what they’re going to do. Not a big deal. But, I would get there early if you can. Sometimes it takes a while for them to find a TSA agent of the same gender as you.
This disclaimer or final note at the bottom of the TSA page is what's worrisome:
"The final decision rests with the TSA officer on whether an item is allowed through the checkpoint"
It leaves it to the discretion of the TSA officer. What if the TSA at your home base allows it, but coming back home, the TSA at the other end does not?
If it is a domestic flight here in the USA you are fine, but outside of the country you cant guarantee the laws are the same.
Yes, its definitely a drawn out process, but if you follow the steps, its pretty easy.
Thank you for your content. I wonder how tsa deals with a person that can't stand?
in a video drew did it in a power wheelchair. he did not get out of the chair. stay tuned video will be out soon!
i travel a lot using a powered chair, i never get out of the chair

I see people traveling with them frequently. I gate check my device and able to walk on the plane.
It's super easy to travel with a mobility scooter now, the airlines are really catching up with the technology.
Is it free travel for the disabled in America or just the skooter or wheel chair. I am an American citizen living abroad.
You can bring your own scooter for free, sure.
How do you get a pouch for the battery?
You took a longtime to load. Delta at Mco waited for us to load next group.
You are a great reversing driver.
I agree pack light. And be willing to ask other passengers for help, even when not on a scooter.
We have a battery bag on our website. Just like this one:

Informative! Question, before boarding, do you have to take the battery onboard or can you leave it on the scooter?
@violetrosegold Lithium batteries must be removed before gate-checking your scooter and brought on the plane with you. In this case, we did remove it. You'll see Drew removed at the 26:39 mark on the video.
nicely done!

I want to travel but have a muscle disease and can’t sit to raise. The plant seats are to low for me! Have any suggestions?
There's plenty of ways to travel without going on planes. Trains, buses and cruises have accessibility options that are better than planes.
I have the EXACT same scooter which is 360WH.... did u buy a lower WH battery??

Are you allowed to carry an extra battery with you?? In your carry on bag??
If your mobility scooter or wheelchair uses lithium-ion batteries, you must identify the watt-hours and ensure they are less than 300 watt-hours. This also includes your extra batteries.

Thank you Drew for showing us what happened when you flew with the scooter. I have one and I’d rather die than go through this. My 50 year old daughter is mentally handicapped. What she went through in the New
Orleans airport in 2016 ruined her vacation. She was subjected to a very personal inspection (while in public) by a female TSA agent. I was appalled and she was embarrassed and in tears. We haven’t flown since. I can only imagine the difficulty/discrimination I would encounter now that I am using a scooter and perceived as vulnerable.

Just for clarity your Li-ion battery is not a dry cell battery, it is a lithium ion battery. There is a distinction in the regs
All lithium batteries are dry cell.
They are but because Li-ions have their own rules, that should be our first answer not "It's dry cell". 🙂

Thank you for the very informative video I won't be so apprehensive when I fly to the states. Really good
Glad it helped! Thanks for watching our video and commenting. We appreciate the support!
Can you request help from the airline to the gate if you have carry-on luggage or would you need to check the scooter at the counter and use a wheelchair to the gate?
Thanks for watching our video and commenting. Gate-checking your mobility scooter is our recommendation because you can remain on your scooter until boarding. There are still some things that you need to keep in mind as mentioned in the video but you can also review our blog post containing our experience with travelling a mobility scooter on an airplane here:
