  • In this video we unload another glaze kiln containing some of my own work and also a couple of pieces by two 16 year olds who recently attended an Introduction to Throwing Course.
    My commission Birdbath comes out with flying colours using Amaco Glazes; Blue Rutile/Palladium/Adventurine and Cosmic Teadust.
    We unpack a couple of the Wonky Pots made during the Wonky Pot tutorial - do take a look at the tutorial on how to make them and also have a look at the Etsy shop to purchase the template to make your own. There is a link to my Etsy show below.
    One of the Wonky Pots made in the tutorial has been decorated using my own bisque texture stamps and again there are still a few sets available in the Etsy shop is you wanted to take a look. The other has been decorated using monoprinting techniques and, again, do have a look at the Monoprinting Playlist for this fabulous and very addictive technique!
    The flower rings continue to be a good seller for me and in this kiln load there is a Amaco Palladium version which has come out well - although, as usual, there are pinholes in the Palladium. If anybody out there has any tips of how to avoid this please do put in the comments for me - I’d be so grateful.
    My work is available to purchase via my Etsy shop (link below) if you’d be kind enough to take a look.
    Hi I’m Sarah Amos. I gave up my day job and am now living the dream as a full-time potter and teacher, running courses from my studio, The Pottery Corner, in a little village just outside Chichester on the South Coast of England. With Cissy and Charlie, my studio companions, we welcome students of all abilities from complete beginners to the more experienced, teaching throwing on the potters wheel as well as handbuilding techniques.
    I love to share my clay experience and knowledge by passing on pottery techniques in my Pottery Top Tip videos; which include full tutorials on items to try out yourselves. I also sell my work via my Website and Etsy Shop. So grab a cuppa, sit back, relax and let’s dive into what’s going on in The Pottery Corner today.

    That bird bath with the beautiful brown birds and exceptional leaf design would make a lot of people happy to have. WOW! I imagine that a lot of dark brown birds would be happy to join that pair.
    Olympia and Nina's mugs are very impressive. I noticed that the wall on Nina's looked really thin, something that I still don't always get when throwing..
    Looking forward to seeing all the wonky pots that you have inspired.
    Cheers...Freddie

    On a separate topic, I'm encouraging you to ask one of your tech savy students to show you how to save your info sheets in PDF format. At 63, I'm not very tech savy either so I do sympathize with you but my skills have improved due to the help I've been given by patient co-workers. Once you're shown how to save a file in PDF you'll be able to do it very easily.

      Hi Jessica- great to hear from you again. Thanks for the tip with palladium- what's your top firing temperature 🌡?? I fire up to 1230 degrees centigrade and have a 10 minute hold which may not be long enough 🤔

    • @snowflakeceramics
      @snowflakeceramics 2 года назад +1

      I fire to cone 5, 2187f, with hold at top. Sounds like you may be doing that too. So the only other thing is thickness, but your pin holes are at the top of the piece, so I'm puzzled. Its a tricky glaze but lovely. I've given up on all my adventurine, cosmic tea dusts-they are just brown. Let me know if you discover a palladium secret. Jessica

    3:25 that is so funny because I was thinking Oatmeal over the top and refire. I love oatmeal over most things. I was also thinking the birds would have been cool with iron luster on the bottom and oatmeal over the top. But for an outdoor piece that cosmic tea dust with shine nicely in the sun. I got an interesting reaction with using black underglaze at the bisque firing then layering on the cosmic tea dust for the glaze firing. That was quite sparkly. I love this piece.

    Wonky Pots look amazing! Congrats to new students on their first pieces, very impressive! Sadly I believe my ol' kiln is in need of element transplant, or I just need to get my newest big Boy kiln wired up. Not many of my pieces turned out, witness cones showed we barely made it to C5 at the bottom. It was supposed to be C6 w/30min hold :( alas I have more items drying out in the shack, and have contacted a handy man to get some increased power out to the kilns, and then can figure out what to do with the ol'gal / lil kiln. PS, Miss Sarah I loved that you named your kilns and it helped me not to feel so insane that I named the new Big Boy-- Gerome, and my lil ol' gal Pixie. Happy to know you have live bodies returning to the studio.

Thanks for the tip on slightly higher bisque temperature. I take mine to 1000 so I might be over what you do already but we shall see - always interesting to hear other peoples firing programmes. Sending love to your beautiful island.😍

    Well done with the bird bath. Question: any concern about palladium having contact with water that will be consumed by birds/wildlife? It is my understanding that palladium is not food safe.

    • @thepotterycorner

      But water is not food. The food safe issue comes in where acidic foods come in contact with glazes.

    Hello Sarah, your birdbath is gorgeous, but please be aware that the form used is too deep for most songbirds that generally frequent backyards/gardens and can cause drowning - wrens, tits, sparrows, finches, even larger birds like robins, starlings, cardinals, etc depending on geographical location.
    May I suggest that your client place stones or pebbles in the bowl for the smaller birds, so the water level doesn't rise any higher than their legs at the deepest part of the bath.
    I mention this also so that in case you plan to make more birdbaths, to please keep this aspect in mind.
    I volunteer at a wildlife rehabilitation center and we always make sure to offer water to the songbirds in shallow dishes to prevent drowning.
    Lovely work! thank you for sharing your videos. Cheers.

    • @thepotterycorner
      @thepotterycorner  2 года назад

      Hi Red. Thanks for the constructive comment. I had mentioned the pebbles in the water for ease of egress for smaller birds. We get a lot of blackbirds bathing around our way but good point to make.
